The urgency of recruiting the next generation of Elks to carry on in our place is grow- ing. But this begs an age- old question: if the younger generation has not done what we have done, or seen what we have seen, can we expect them to believe what we believe? If they don’t share the same commitment to charity, justice, and brotherly love – what is to become of The Benevolent and Protec- tive values that make us the Order of Elks? My dad was an L.A. police- man. One day, not long before he died, I asked him why it had been so important to him to teach me to fly fish when I was young. He told me if all your friends fish with hand grenades, it’s tempting to throw one in the creek too unless you know better. If we are going to save our order by infus- ing it with younger mem- bers, we cannot leave their beliefs to chance. Whether cooking for a lodge event, helping to repaint a schoolroom, or bringing the veterans down from the home at Yountville once a year, our volunteers give because they have learned the joy of doing for others simply because they need help. We need to teach our younger members the same joy of doing for others, just as the generations before taught us. But what words can we choose to teach this lesson? Having raised four teen- agers, I am confident that it cannot be taught entirely by talking the talk. It is ac- complished by walking the walk. We teach best when we lead by example. To ac- complish this, we need to keep one arm around the shoulders of a new, young member as they watch us show them what it means to be an Elk. Sponsorship of new members – especial- ly those from the younger generations will eventually mean life or death for the Order of Elks. But sponsor- ship alone is not enough. We cannot just leave them abandoned at the doorstep and expect it to make a dif- ference in their lives or in the life of the lodge. Their first year of membership is a fragile and critical time. Their first experiences will determine whether they successfully assimilate into the lodge, and this, in turn, can make the difference in whether or not when they learn to share our love of giving to others. Without someone familiar to lead by example, they might never perceive Elks as more than an inexpensive bar and restaurant. We Elks are givers. We Elks are helpers. But un- less we are also teachers, we may be the last genera- tion to give more scholar- ships than anyone except the U.S. Government and to offer our veterans the help and respect they deserve. Please – if you have sponsored members, give them a call. Ask how they’re doing. Make a date to meet them for a drink and dinner, and plan just one event in which you both volunteer together so they can learn to follow your example. This is the theme for Elks 901 this year: Elks – leading by example. Your children and your grandchildren will thank you for it. Thoughts from our Exalted Ruler

Yesterday, I returned from the California Hawaii Elks

Association (CHEA) meet-ing. It is a high-energy event which includes the Exalted Ruler from each lodge pre-senting the total contribu-tions from the Purple Pig from the previous year. As always, the members of Petaluma 901 gave generously to children, just as we do to veterans.

But the proud Elk we see on our logo is turning gray. Our rank and file is aging. The urgency of recruiting the next generation of Elks to carry on in our place is grow-ing. But this begs an age-old question: if the younger generation has not done what we have done, or seen what we have seen, can we expect them to believe what we believe? If they don’t share the same commitment to charity, justice, and brotherly love – what is to become of The Benevolent and Protec-tive values that make us the Order of Elks?

My dad was an L.A. police-man. One day, not long before he died, I asked him why it

had been so important to him to teach me to fly fish when I was young. He told me if all your friends fish with hand grenades, it’s tempting to throw one in the creek too unless you know better. If we are going to save our order by infus-ing it with younger mem-bers, we cannot leave their beliefs to chance.

Having raised four teen-agers, I am confident that it cannot be taught entirely by talking the talk. It is ac-

complished by walking the walk. We teach best when we lead by example. To ac-complish this, we need to keep one arm around the shoulders of a new, young member as they watch us show them what it means to be an Elk. Sponsorship of new members – especial-ly those from the younger generations will eventually mean life or death for the Order of Elks. But sponsor-ship alone is not enough. We cannot just leave them abandoned at the doorstep and expect it to make a dif-ference in their lives or in the life of the lodge. Their first year of membership is a fragile and critical time. Their first experiences will determine whether they successfully assimilate into the lodge, and this, in turn, can make the difference in whether or not when they learn to share our love of giving to others. Without someone familiar to lead by example, they might never

perceive Elks as more than an inexpensive bar and restaurant.

We Elks are givers. We Elks are helpers. But un-less we are also teachers, we may be the last genera-tion to give more scholar-ships than anyone except the U.S. Government and to offer our veterans the help and respect they deserve. Please – if you have sponsored members, give them a call. Ask how they’re doing. The contributions for the month of April were $ $678.06. We started this year somewhat slow, but we can all be proud of our efforts. In

looking over the past contribution records I found that we had one pig with over $93.00 in it! Keep up the good work and we can make the coming year a great one. Thank for your continued support.

Please put your name on/in the pig so proper credit can be noted on lodge and CHEA records. w

WE WANT YOU!

Elks – A Beacon of Hope

Flag Day June 14th – The Birth of Old GloryFlag Day, June 14th, commemorates the birth of Old Glory, the adoption of the flag of the United States by

resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America has celebrated the holiday since

the early days of the organization. Patriotism has characterized the BPOE and allegiance to the flag of our country is a requirement of every member.

In 1907, the Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14th as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted man-datory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, which continues today. The Elks Flag Day Service is very spe-cial as it not only covers the history of our flag, but many of the flags of the earlier colonies are displayed for the audience.

The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order’s observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expres-sion. In May 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14th as Flag Day.

On August 3rd, 1949, President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14th would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country and National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

6 The Whisperings

I am very pleased to announce that our lodge received both the 2012-

2013 Beacon & Gratitude Grants. The $1,000 Beacon Grant will be used to help furnish a new residence for a number of our homeless Veterans. The Grant is being implemented through Sonoma County’s Vet Connect organiza-tion. If you would like to participate in helping furnish the residences of the Veterans we will be assisting, please email me at [email protected] or call my cell at 415-297-8394. The second grant is awarded to those lodges who achieved the ENF goal of $4.50 per memb er. Last year, our lodge actu-ally exceeded this goal by contributing $5.65 per member. The lodge decided to contribute $1,000 to the Giant Steps program & $1,000 to the Petaluma Wildlife Museum. Both programs require Elk participation & we encour-age our members to contact us to see how they can help. The Giants Steps program is an equestrian program that helps our Veterans, numerous children & adults with disabilities. The Peta-luma Wildlife Museum needs volunteers to work to fix up the museum & help reconstruct some aging displays. The museum is a great resource for the students at Petaluma High School & others within our community. If you have construction skills, I encourage you to contact us immediately. Starting July 1, 2013, the next round of grants become available. If you have an idea for a worthwhile cause or possible grant project, please call me. Visit the Elks.org website & the ENF page for more information about all of the grants ENF provides.

On April 27th we had 25 mem-bers of the lodge, 2 scouts, &

4 volunteers participate in the 2 mile Butter & Egg Day Parade.

We made an impact. First, Drug Awareness was well represented. We handed out 1500 bookmarks to kids along the parade route. We handed out 2000 mini fliers with mention of our programs (including Americanism, Drug Awareness, Dictionary & Es-say/Scholarships) to adults along the parade route. Our banner on the float mentioned our programs (DA, Scholar-ships, & “Just say No”) which reached over 30,000 people. In addition, script announcements were made by parade announcers at 4 specific points along the route where parade watchers were told of our community involvement in DA, Americanism & Scholarships.

Between the two pre-meetings & the actual parade, many hours were expended by lodge members & vol-unteers. It was a lot of hard work & a very long day but if you look at the pictures, we accomplished what we set out to do “BE INVOLVED IN OUR COMMUNITY.”

Congratulations & best wishes to all that gave their time & energy to such a worthwhile event.

901 TRUSTEE’S-HOUSE COMMITTEE’S

MONTHLY REPORTWell your T H/C committee

is taking a small breather after getting the budget passed on the floor of the Lodge. Trustee David Adams went to the CHEA State Con-vention with our officers and attended many of the workshops and business sessions that dealt with hall manage-ment, bringing back many resources and much information to the T H/C. Month of May - some of the items that came before the T H/C:

1. S.V.P. Dinner budget.2. The upcoming lodge audit.3. Discussions on Lodge activities.4. A reservation process for our RV

visitors. 5. A presentation by Stone Baroni

from Petaluma High School, one of the State Winners of the Skills comple-tion. He won the sheet metal fabrication contest. Stone is a Junior at Petaluma High.

6. Discussion was brought up about having a child care room for meeting and activity nights.

As always if you would like to speak at the T H/C meeting contact the of-fice at 763-0901 and have them place you on the agenda by the Wednesday before the meeting. Your ideas and participation are needed to help grow the lodge and help make it the place to come, enjoy and use as a resource for each and every one of us to better our community.

Meetings are held each month on the Monday before the stated meeting.

1. A BIG “Thank You to everyone who worked, slaved, and volunteered at the May 4th Ritual dinner. You all did a fantastic job and made Petaluma 901 proud.

2. The California-Hawaii Elks Major project has several donation clubs you can become a part of: The 52, Century, and Millennium Clubs. You can join these simply by making a $52 (52 Club), $100 (Century Club), or $100 (Millennium Club) donation. With each donation you will receive a lapel pin and a certificate. The dona-tions accumulate and you can reach the millennium club level. You can make as many donations as you like and receive multiple pins and certifi-cations. Remember, this money goes to help the children walk, talk, see & play. So just send your check to the lodge and note that it is for the Major Project 52 Club, Century Club, or Mil-lennium Club. This year’s “Per Mem-ber” goal is $1.00 per week = $52. Will you help?

3. There will be a Volunteer meeting on June 3rd at 5:30 at the lodge. Anyone interested is wel-come!!!!! We will be discussing new projects and checking on some that have been started. I am still looking for some folks to chair some of these special projects & welcome some new ideas. Remember this is YOUR lodge too!!!!
