LATOYA DEESE

LaToya Deese, 1st gup, Karate Masters, was awarded $500.00 for the year 2005. She cur-rently attends Houston Baptist University with a concentration in Entrepreneurship.

LaToya was six when she began training at Milberger’s Tang Soo Do, September 1993. Shehad problems with a bully at school that would constantly tease her. Some of the self-defense techniques she learned were particularly helpful. Mr. Milberger changed to SooBahk Do under the Moo Duk Kwan Federation. She left MDK as a 1st Gup due to a Dan test-ing conflict. Her mother helped her join Karate Masters three months later. She retested

for 1st Gup under the World Tang Soo Do Association with Master Sharpe as her instructor. She enjoys KarateMasters a lot better because it’s mostly based on survival.

Quote from Scholarship Essay:“Out of nowhere, a boy ran beside me and kept ramming himself into me. About halfway across the field, I col-lapsed into the dry grass and lost one of my teeth… The same kid constantly bullied me, teased me and frequentlystole my lunch. “At that point, my mom decided to enroll me in karate. In September 1993, I began training atMilberger’s Soo Bahk Do where I gained knowledge in self-defense… The next time I had a confrontation withhim, he tried to punch me, but I blocked it and caught him in an arm-lock. I enjoyed hearing him cry for his moth-er while other kids witnessed the situation and applauded. I had no problems with him after that.”

fter Hurricane Katrina, gangsterrorized the weak, the youngand the old. As dehydrationbecame another horror to deal

with, starting with the elderly and then thenewborn, the AP news agency reportedthat some survivors were determined todefend their neighborhoods and theirlives. “We kind of together decided wewould defend what we have here and wewould stay up all night every night” saidarmy veteran Charlie Hackett.

It seems unreal but imagine for amoment your town being flooded and toldto find a way to your local high school forfederal aid and that help is coming. However, days later you realize the authori-ties simply forgot about you, leaving youwithout food, water, toilets, electricity orprotection from the thugs. Your local highschool would eventually turn into a violent, lawless, third world jungle, where the weak-est and most defenseless would perish fromthe heat, lack of food, water, intimidation, violence and murder from these thugs.

Offer Free Self Defense Classes Master Williamson offers Free Self

Defense Class to the community. Heemphasizes that, just like CPR, individualsshould update their skills every few years. They may have taken a self-defense courseyears ago, but new approaches and dangersare out there. Here is some wording heuses to promote his self-defense classes:“Not only will a self-defense class refreshyour skills, but it will also renew your self-confidence. After role-playing and being

“attacked” from all angles and in differentsituations, you will feel more confident asyou leave class or work in the yard. You’lllearn how to effectively strike, yell, kickand avoid attackers. In today’s society ittakes more than just staying out of darkalleys to avoid possible assailants. It takesself-confidence.

This isn’t a confidence that says, “Goahead, and attack me. I can take you.” It’sa confidence that comes from knowingyou have taken control of a possible situ-ation and that no matter what the out-come of an attack, you have given yourselfall the tools possible to assist you in mak-ing decisions about fleeing, negotiating orfighting.

It allows you to feel more confidentwhen you’re outside, shopping or evendoing reports at work. It allows you to feelin control at meetings, with co-workersand with yourself.

An added bonus is that this new self-confidence encourages you to stick to thatdiet or exercise program, ask for a pro-motion, head that committee or do some-thing you have put off because you didn’tfeel you were ready.

Do something for yourself. Supportthe relief efforts of hurricane Katrina andbring a friend and attend our free self-defense class. After all, you’re worth it.”

afiya Khan, 9 year old daugh-ter of Masters Mujahid andDawn Khan of Great Britain, came up with a great idea

recently which she shared with WTSDAHeadquarters when she visited thererecently.

She said that lots of kids want to donatemoney to the building fund but don't havethe $40 necessary to buy a brick like theadults do.

However, many of them do have pock-et money and many of them do love thoserubber wrist bracelets which are being soldin different colors for many different char-ities.

Why didn't the WTSDA come up withone so the kids could donate their moneyand show their pride of helping with the

SWTSDA Building Fund efforts by wearingthe bracelets? What a great idea!!

So, we know have a red rubberizedbracelet (see Safiya's right wrist in thephoto) that is being sold at all regionalevents at the building fund tables or canbe purchased through your instructors. They sell for $5 each and have the words"World Tang Soo Do Foundation" on it.

Kids, show your pride in our Art andwear your proud colors today!

tudents and families of theGrand Tradition MartialArts/Linden club ofLinden, Michigan partici-

The 24 hour event ran from 2:00PM on Friday through 2:00 PM onSaturday. Community committeeplanning for the event had begun atleast one year prior to these dates. The Linden club began their effortsapproximately 2 months ago. Theclub raised funds through a bottledrive, as well as through on-linerequests, luminaria sales and regulardonation solicitations.

Instructor, 4th Dan Mr. ChrisAnderson and several students, ranging in rank from 7th Gup to 6thGup and ranging in age from 9 to 11,also contributed by breaking boardsfor $5.00 each, to the wild amaze-ment of the crowds who gathered towatch the demonstration! The totalamount raised by students ofGTMA-Linden was $863.00! Notbad for a first year team. The entireRelay group raised over $144,000 forcancer research.

The experience was challenging, fun, touching, thought provoking, and rewarding. It provided anopportunity for the club to do some-thing together, besides karate – topromote community spirit.

Karate brought us together, andtogether we contributed to a veryworthwhile community project. Itwas exciting to be a part of the event, and even more exciting, at the end of24 very hot and humid hours, to hearthe conversation turn to talk of “howwe can do better next year”!

y name is GenevieveMcGuigan. I train atBrandywine Martial Arts inPennsylvania with Mr. And

Mrs. Peterman. I have been studyingthere for almost seven years. When Ithought about my high school gradua-tion project, Tang Soo Do popped intomy head.

My mother and I came up with theidea of making a Tang Soo Do relatedquilt. We put our talents together tomake something beautiful.

First, I had to go to my instructor andtell him my plan of making a quilt andusing it to raise money for the BuildingFund. This was very important because astudent of Tang Soo Do should do noth-ing without the permission of theirinstructor.

I also needed permission fromGrandmaster Shin. Then, and only then,I could proceed. I was able to get theirpermission after showing them mydrawings of how it would look and Ibegan my project.

Making the quilt was a long andorganized process. I did one step at atime and also took my time so that I didnot get frustrated. My mother andinstructors were a major help to me. I

could not have done it without them. When the quilt was completed, I

could start raising money for theBuilding Fund. My instructor, Mr.Peterman, contacted Ms. Gonski andMaster Kaye, chairman of the BuildingFund Committee to help with the raffleticket setup.

Some of my classmates fromBrandywine Martial Arts helped to selltickets; we sold them at the Region 8Black Belt test and at the Region 8Championship. We raised $3125.00!

I had a lot of help with my graduationproject. This was a great honor and I gota chance to meet a lot of key people inour Association.

I hope that you decide to help raisemoney for the Building Fund. My grad-uation project was a major success. Now- what can you do for Tang Soo Do?
