Coming Home To Headquarters - What’s Next?

Senior Masters, Instructors, Students, and Parents of our WTSDA Family have asked about our headquarters. Such things as, What does the training studio look like o are the dorm rooms What s it like for the staff ith their of ce s ace and

equi ment The conversation generally focuses on, What s ne t o that Phase I is com lete, ith the main building and the Meditation Garden, how about Phase II and Phase III?

Grandmaster Shin envisioned several hases to the WTSDA eadquarters. The initial hase has been his dream come true, and a sincere blessing it has been for him to have e erienced that dream. What s ne t on the hori on is the conce t of a main gym. The incentive for this ne t hase has been several factors such as the growth of the S Masters linics, now assing over the attendees, and outgrowing the niversity of orth Alabama and the hotel accommodations in Florence. Also, the facility usage and events in Region 7, our headquarters home region, has increased.

So many eo le have come home to visit. esides the last three World cham ionshi s, held in Greensboro, with s ecial events taking lace in urlington, orth arolina, students, instructors, Masters, guests, and families have taken the o ortunity to come home . As discussions s read all over the world about the ossibility of Phase II being a Gym at eadquarters, one that would accommodate a training facility, dormitories, a cafeteria, all art of a Tang Soo Do am us, interest ignited a s ark to generate even more ossibilities.

Several eo le shared their thoughts and drew u architectural drawings and brainstormed images of what could become an enhanced vision of Grandmaster Shins dream. I encourage our fellow WTSDA members and their families to come home and visit our headquarters and su ort our ne t hase of growth.

Protocol - How Does it Affect Me? What Can I do About it?

Just attended a ublic event at a local theater where a sold out audience was awaiting for the curtain to go u . I was sitting

with my wife and several of her co-workers, when two young eo le came u to me, bowed, and shook my hand, and when

I said that I ho e they enjoy the resentation and give my best wishes to their arents, they said, es, Sir , and returned to their seats. The guests that were with us were sur rised at how olite these two youngsters were and how res ectful they behaved. My wife and I e ected it, since we see it frequently, as martial arts etiquette and Tang Soo behavior. However, it was une ected by the guests that were with us and, needless to say, were leasantly sur rised and com limented us about those two young eo le. f course, I didn’t say that they were both lack elts in our WTSDA Family, but it certainly reinforced that ride in our art.

We have all witnessed the o osite of good rotocol, the negative behavior infecting our social fabric, the lack of res ect, oor manners, deceitful actions, ervasive lies, downright dishonesty, and just lain old ordinary ugliness. What we can do is concentrate . . . concentrate on truth, beauty, and love. Whatever we say or do, we focus on the truth. e truthful to all the eo le with whom you interact. When talking with others, just kee telling the truth. When things are getting confused, com licated, stuck, just tell the truth.

eauty is that thing we all seek to watch, focus on, observe. We all want to see the beauty in others, the beautiful things around us, the ositive attractive as ects of life. We don’t want to see the ugly things, the bad side of eo le, it’s much more a ealing and leasant to see the beauty that surrounds us. Most of the time, we’re too busy, too distracted, and blinded by sel shness, our bias, and our egos, to see the beauty right in front of us. Just o en our eyes, and see the beauty. Take it in, cherish it.

Finally, the ultimate rotocol is dis layed from the heart.

Protocol is e ressed as the truest form of caring. I remember Grandmaster Shin saying that when using Ki Gong to heal self and others, to remember to do it with love . Sim le bowing, which we so readily use in our Tang Soo Do ractice, is e ecuted with res ect. That res ect is e tracted from dee within our mental and emotional being. ecause we sincerely care, res ect, and admire someone, erha s due to their re utation, their rank, their accom lishments, then we choose to show them res ect in a loving way through a courteous bow.

esides Truth, eauty, and Love, which we e ercise with our verbal and non-verbal behavior, in our actions and interactions with others, there is a s ecial rotocol activity that focuses on the martial artist

articularly. That is the uniform. The Dobohk is a unique conce t that requires an abundant variety of rotocol considerations. To name a

few, there is rst of all, a reminder of the 4th Attitude Requirement, which em hasi es the im ortance of cleanliness . So, kee ing our Dobohk clean is a start. There is the ro er folding and carrying the Dobohk. There is the warrior’s res ect for his or her armor and never letting the belt touch the ground, or not allowing it to hang

on the shoulder or around the neck. We sometimes forget to take off our belts when eating, and need to turn away from the class when ing our Dobohk. It is good res ect to bow, and then turn away to tie one’s belt, straighten our Dobohk, and then turn back to bow again to instructor. Small details of rotocol often have dee and signi cant im act showing ride, honor, and character of the martial artist.

Member’s Spotlight


The 2015 WTSDA Business Seminar was a Success!urrent school owners and staff members, as well as those ho ing to o en a school, gathered in Jacksonville, Florida

for the Fourth Annual WTSDA usiness Seminar in January. The theme for this year’s gathering was nity and rotherhood . The conce t is sim le- gather those who have o ened and maintain a school to share best ractices and discuss, with those who wish to learn, new ways to grow and romote the WTSDA. The love of our Art was a common thread throughout this ama ing weekend.

n Thursday morning, a eld tri was scheduled with ermission from Grandmaster eaudoin, under the guidance of Senior Master John Godwin and Senior Master Allen Shar e, to visit Master ill lark’s Karate America Headquarters. Master lark rolled out the red car et for his guests and s ent time s eaking with the grou about the business of Martial Arts. As attendees arrived in Jacksonville on Thursday evening, Master Jan La in, her staff and her students o ened their doors at Middleburg Martial Arts for training seminars. Senior Master John Godwin led Ha kido classes for both kids and adults, while Senior Master Allen Shar e led Masters linic training. Master Giselle Shar e taught Adults Hyung and Master Steven

lmore taught a JuJitsu class. Master Jan La in’s students re ared goodie baskets for the resenters and also hosted a i a arty.

Friday morning was off to a great start with e cellent sessions, including re aring a business lan, the enrollment rocess, the im ortance of ef cient systems, and communication with students and arents. During breaks and at lunch, attendees s ent time in the hotel networking and sharing ideas. As evening arrived, the tables were cleared and dobohks were donned for training. Senior Master Shar e led the class, reviewing ractical a lications for one-ste s, as well as Hyung training.

Saturday had many more great sessions, including marketing strategies, student retention, after-school rograms, and the multi-school conce t. The conce t of the rotating curriculum was introduced to some, and its bene ts were discussed.That evening the attendees met at lark’s Fish am , well known for its ta idermy collection as well as many e otic ty es of meat. Adventurous eaters were at home with the menu! The meal was a great time for all!

Sunday’s sessions included Internet Marketing and Statistics. y

the end of the weekend, every attendee had a lot of information, great resources, as well as a new network of like-minded individuals within our organi ation with whom to share ideas and information. veryone also had an action list and a thumb drive with every resentation at their ngerti s.

Any individual who is considering starting a rogram or o ening a school, as well as those ho ing to take their current rograms to the ne t level, would be remiss to not take advantage of this awesome o ortunity to learn from the leaders of our great

Association. Several schools have been o ened and are

ourishing after their owners attended this event. Mr. Paul Helsdon and his wife, Mrs. Susan Helsdon, owners of True

alance Karate in Downers Grove, Illinois, are just one e am le of the ower of this seminar. Two years ago, they decided to o en their school. In four months, they had 70 students, and by their second year in business, they have over 200 students training. Mr. and Mrs. Helsdon certainly saw the value in attending this seminar! My husband, Paul oriega, and I were grateful for the o ortunity to attend this year’s

event on behalf of Mr. Miguel Soto and M.A.S. Tang Soo Do. We are e cited to bring new knowledge home!

The amount of time and energy ut into this seminar is a arent from the moment eo le sign u . S ecial thanks to all of the resenters who take the time and e ense to share their e tensive knowledge, including Master Johnny Williamson, Master Steven lmore, Master Jan La in and Master Mary Treacy. Senior Master John Godwin lends his su ort and guidance for this event every year. Senior Master Allen Shar e ensures that this event is a success through man ower and resources. Master Giselle Shar e works countless hours to see to every detail, including accommodations, food, communications, gifts for the resenters, as well as re aring all of the materials and

ackets for each attendant. ery s ecial thanks to Grandmaster eaudoin for su orting this seminar each year. His insight into

the needs of our studios and clubs allows us all to grow and romotes our Association. We ho e to see lots of new faces at

In Memory of Master Mark Causerano

Senior International Master Instructor Mark auserano

died eacefully in his home due to com lications from his battle with cancer on ctober 27, 20 4 and WTSDA lost another of its founding members. His assing leaves us sad that we will no longer hear his voice, see his smiling face, or witness his wonderful sense of humor. His early de arture also leaves the WTSDA with a big air of shoes to ll.

For all of us who knew and loved him, Master auserano has rovided

wonderful memories of his goodness and kindness. He worked constantly to hel his fellow man. At his memorial service, one of the most touching moments came when one of his neighbors stood u to s eak about how on cold wintery days, he would wake at four in the morning to the sound of his neighbor Mark cleaning his sidewalk for him. He told of his res ect and affection for Master auserano and how he admired and thought of him as a good neighbor and a ne man.

Master auserano was a harter Member of the WTSDA. From the beginning of our organi ation, he was a leader, a doer, and a shaker. He served in many key ositions over the years as: hairman of the Membershi ommittee, Regional Director

for Region for some years, as well as assisting Grandmaster Shin in organi ing the many events held yearly in our region.

Region holds an Instructor’s class for studio owners and masters that was started in 7. Master auserano never missed that class and was the only master studio owner who had erfect attendance right u until he rst became ill. He truly set the bar for loyalty and dedication. Master auserano was also a ersonal friend to me. He and I met back in 7 at a hristmas Party held by the Kwon rothers Dojang, where he was teaching at the time as a full time instructor. We talked the whole evening and became close friends. ur friendshi endured over the years and our destinies were tied to and through the WTSDA.

ur ho e is that Master auserano will rest easy in the knowledge that he left a lasting legacy of students who have

ledged to carry on his work of offering the bene ts of martial arts training to the general ublic, to introduce them to the WTSDA, to make a difference in eo les’ lives, and to hel them get on a ath of im rovement for the rest of their lives. Master auserano’s life offers us ins iration as to how a serious martial artist should live and rom ts us to a new commitment to continue the work he loved and to which he dedicated his life.

Region 8 Judges’ Clinics

On Se tember 7, 20 4, Master Rich Arteca held a Judges’ Training linic for certi cation for corner and center

judges at Vaughn’s Dojang located near Valley Forge, PA. Master Rich Arteca has held Judges’ Training linics for certi cation for corner and center judges at various locations throughout Region several times a year for the ast 7 years. He has also held seminars at the Masters’ linic. These clinics have been a great success in re aring lack elts for judging assignments at Regional and World ham ionshi s. The rogram is designed to give instruction to lack elts who wish to advance their skills and to gain credits for judging assignments. Master Arteca has s ent great time and effort in re aring materials for the training and testing he erforms at the many clinics he conducts for the Association. His resentations are clear, concise and enthusiastic, ins iring fairness and rofessionalism to the candidates. Master Arteca offers 2 to 3 Training linics for certi cation each year in various studios throughout the region.

WTSDA students can feel more safe and confident in artici ating in tournaments when they know they can e ect

rofessional judging to be available. It is just another sign of how our Association has grown and continues in its quest for e cellence.

2nd Annual WTSDA Region 4 Women’s Won Hwa Weekend

The 2nd Annual Region 4 Won Hwa Weekend was a great success. On the weekend of Se t -20, 20 , over a do en woman of WTSDA came together to celebrate and e lore the role of woman in our organi ation. We all came to the event with our

own goals and as irations and went home rejuvenated and ins ired for another year of training. Organi ed by Region 4’s Master Giselle Shar e, two very s ecial guests were invited to the Won Hwa Weekend. Master Susan Del uono and Master Mary Treacy shared their wisdom and stories with all the artici ants of the clinic. These women were trailbla ers within our organi ation and still continue to e ose WTSDA to new ideas of how to train and how to reach out to the community.

Master Susan Del uono started training in 74 under her current instructor, Grandmaster Robert eaudoin and was the rst woman a ointed to the board of directors in 6. Master Del uono shared some of the knowledge she has gained over

her years in Tang Soo Do to teach us drills and techniques that im roved every woman there, regardless of belt rank. She broke down how to better generate force through the body mechanics, and to use these mechanics to increase the ower in our blocks and cho s. S arring training in a S armony artner ow drill e ercise was considered one of the highlights of many of the women. eyond strict Tang Soo Do training, Master Del uono focused on kee ing our bodies strong, and injury free. She instructed on the kinesiology of the hi s and knees and of novel ways to think about stretching, culminating in a hi stretch routine, as well as a strengthening and rela ing Ki Gong meditation. It was very clear to all the artici ants at the weekend that we had only barely touched on the knowledge that Master Del uono has to ass on to others. We were blessed to have so much of her time and focus.

Master Mary Treacy Jansa brought enthusiasm and camaraderie to the entire weekend. Master Treacy began training in Tang Soo Do in the February of 7. She has a strong resence in her region, acting as the Region oordinator and the Membershi

ommittee hair on the oard of Directors. She also serves as the Program Director for agle Academy’s 6 locations. This e erience has made her sought after for her e ertise in business, which she readily shares. ot only does Master Treacy hold a Sah Dan Master Rank with the WTSDA in Tang So Do, she also holds a Master Rank in Ha kido. Master Treacy is assionate about safety therefore the Won Hwa Weekend women were instructed in ractical Ha kido techniques a lied from a woman’s

ers ective and also self-defense. This self-defense included movements to get out of holds, ractical verbal hrases, learning to trust our gut, and to be aware of the situations around you. Master Treacy also shared how to teach self-defense as a curriculum. She was able to give many e am les of her own e eriences that motivated her to ass along the knowledge and assion to others.

There were many o ortunities for the artici ants to share dialog with the Masters and with each other. A articularly focused

event, a Master’s Panel was created just after lunch on Saturday. The three Masters took turns answering questions from each of the artici ants. To ics varied from the beginnings of WTDSA, business lans, how to im rove s aring techniques, to fun and

ersonal stories that the Masters were willing to discuss. It was a rivilege to hear their e eriences and learn from their ersonal journeys. Another Won Hwa Weekend is lanned for Se tember 6- , 20 6. If you are a woman in WTSDA and over , come

artici ate in a s ecial time dedicated to you. We need more women leading our girls, showing them the way and teaching them how much more they can achieve.

The HDL Experience

agerness and desire are what brought me to eruse the Hwarang Dan League in early June. My curiosity was

s arked by my instructor, Master Mary Treacy, informing me of the unique o ortunity. She described it as an intensive training cam just outside of Houston, Te as for teens in the WTSDA who wish to enhance both their traditional and contem orary martial art styles. on our arrival, Master Treacy, the other two artici ants from my region ) and myself were eager to get started when 2 blue-suited WTSDA members turned the corner to greet us. The air of brotherhood associated with the WTSDA was

resent and remained for the duration of the tri . While we waited for the rest of the team to arrive, discussion broke out among us ertaining to our regions, tournaments, and Regional cham ionshi cu s a few of us had won, and of course the

ros ects that our martial arts training will strengthen over the ne t week. For our rst night in Te as, 20 of us joined in the weekly class at Karate Masters, the dojang where we would be training during our stay. Two hours were dedicated to working out our rst evening, and very little conversation was resent between us within this time. The same feeling of unity and brotherhood arose within this grou , a feeling I had not truly understood u until that oint. I knew, as I do now, judging by the rst class alone, the ne t week of my life would be one of the best I’d ever come to know.

The ne t morning came early with much on the agenda. Drilling, forms and wea ons were rst on the day’s agenda, as ra turous

enthusiasm coursed through everyone’s veins. ow that we had come to know each other, and icebreakers were over, all cam ers began to show their full otential as martial artists, not only in character but s irit. ach individual started to intensify their technique as the lesson rogressed, as if the assion and ower of eers ins ired others to do the same. This standard stayed in lace for the duration of the week, and made each student increasingly better as a whole. When training concluded for the night, we were reminded by instructors that we had yet another long day ahead. The ne t morning we drove to a gymnastics academy to ractice jum kicks, i s, and other acrobatics that we would incor orate into our training later. citement grew throughout the day as we acquired new skills, and as we did so,

raise was awarded by other cam ers, as well as instructors. This would continue to fuel us through the day, ushing ourselves beyond our limits in order to achieve. I have yet to e erience the same feeling of ins iration and motivation since training with my fellow members of the Hwarang Dan League, and as I re ect u on it, the o ortunity to travel to Te as in search of further training was one of the best weeks of my life.

Training with the HDL’s ama ing staff during Al ha am has left me with desire to enhance my abilities related to Tang Soo Do and otherwise. early two months later, I am still greatly ins ired to ush beyond my limits in every-day training, yet there is still no com arison to HDL. Those ve days have left me with much to study, ractice, and just as im ortant, has o ened me u to other ama ing artici ants, whom I have yet to go very long without talking to. I cannot describe in words what Master Shar e and Master Treacy have done for us, and how much I should thank them, as well as the e ecutive board for initiating the otential new WTSDA HDL rogram. Al ha cam will be a memory I hold on to for my entire life. I e ect my Tang Soo Do training will be lifelong, as well as I’m sure it will be for my eers, HDL will have roven to be a wonderful foundation for years to come.

Master Larry Wick

We will all miss Master Wick dearly. Those closest to him will feel our

hearts hurt longer. His students and friends in Fairbanks that trained with him for years, the family that was with him everyday for 30 years will miss him the most. He loved his students in Fairbank so much. He knew everyone’s name and would hand write hristmas cards for each of his students every year with a different, ersonal message.

Those of us that had the o ortunity to meet him and learn from his teachings immediately loved him for his humor and technique. We couldn’t get enough. From all corners of the world we wrote letters to him, called him and emailed him. He loved the letters and cards so much. They con rmed he had found his ur ose in life. For a man to have touched so many, says much about his humanity and integrity. He always tried to make anyone he talked to, smile. That was his goal, make everyone smile, be ha y, even for a moment. He went to every region that requested him and the results were the same. He touched us all.

The Master’s linic meant so much to him. He refused to attend if he couldn’t hysically artici ate with everything on the schedule. He was retty stubborn. I recall, years ago, it wasn’t too much after he had his o en-heart surgery he went to the Master’s linic. We were retty worried about him ushing it too hard but Master Wick wouldn’t let u and in his usual style, he went for it. He ste ed u . I think that surgery is when he started really enjoying the moments of living. When it really counted, he faced it strong, like a warrior. He ste ed u .

He cherished living and he wanted to make everyone ha y. He knew his mission in life. When he got sick with cancer, he knew his days were numbered. I think he lasted longer than we thought and we were so glad for the e tra recious time. He was able to send his message even louder and touch as many as he could. He didn’t want any sym athy, so he made everyone ha y, with his signature ose and hrase smile, be ha y ! He ste ed u .

He wasn’t sure if he would make it to the 20 Masters linic. He wanted so des erately to be able to artici ate and

see everyone one more time. This event was his highlight every year. He always looked so forward to it. It meant everything to him. efore his last Master’s linic, it was touch and go. He would have good days and bad. He wouldn’t attend if he couldn’t artici ate hysically. At the last minute he decided to attend, thankfully. We had one last Master’s linic to share with him. He said he would do his best, des ite the ain. As usual, he volunteered to teach clinics, even though he wasn’t sure if he could nish them. He wanted to com lete three goals - our grou hyung session and he had to teach his best last two clinics.

After successfully com leting each of these goals, he shed tears. Partly because he was able the nish and artly because he knew that was the last time. He ste ed u .

Master Wick was asked to sit on the senior testing anel, an honor only given to a few. And of course, we all had the wonderful o ortunity to watch as he took the candidates through their right of assage with his infamous udsai hyung. If I’m not

mistaken, he was voted by his eers, to receive the s irit award the most times than anyone at the annual Masters linic, sim ly by being himself. And as a tribute to who he was, this award was renamed the Larry Wick S irit Award during his last year.

At the end of the closing ceremonies, he said goodbye to every single erson in the room. It would be the last time he would see us or we would see him. It’s hard to fathom how dif cult, yet recious that was to do. He could have easily declined and everyone would have understood, but he wanted to say goodbye, to everyone. He ste ed u .

As it turned out, he assed away just after our 20 6 Masters’ linic closing ceremonies. Some may call it coincidence. I think

he wanted to make it through to the end. It was so s ecial to him. Our Master Wick led by e am le at everything he did, es ecially as he declined in health. He knew how he wanted to be remembered and he took the dif cult ath to assure we would remember him for everything ositive. He ste ed u every single time. He was a true warrior, a true Master.

Master Wick, be ha y and es ecially, have a big smile! For every time we think of you that’s what we’ll be doing. In his honor, let’s all ste u and face our dif cult challenges the way he showed us and most im ortant, let’s be the e am le he wants us to be for our students and every erson we meet. What a class act. Thank you sir for sharing your life with us and teaching us what is truly im ortant. Tang Soo!!!

A question I often get. Along with can you hel me with ? and when do I need you to see something? In an effort to answer those questions and since Volume V notes that legal assistance is available to all studio owners through the LA ,

it is im ortant to know what the LA is for, what it can do, how it can hel , and how it can’t) here is some general information. As the World Tang Soo Do Association WTSDA ) and the World Tang Soo Do Foundation WTSDF ) have grown over the years, the need for access to information and resources related to the Legal Affairs ommittee LA ) has grown. The LA , and its staff, is charged with the administration of all legal activities of the WTSDA and WTSDF.

What does that mean, e actly? The LA is the legal de artment for the WTSDA and WTSDF. If there is an issue, contract, dis ute or other matter which has legal im lications, the LA should be informed and or involved. For e am le, the LA should receive for review all contracts that bind either com any all Regional Directors should be submitting contracts for sanctioned events in their region to the LA rior to e ecution for review and comment). The LA should be informed if, at a sanctioned event, there is a serious injury. The LA should receive co ies of com laints directed at the WTSDA or where a studentstudent’s arent is looking to the WTSDA for assistance with a dis ute with an instructor or studio owner). The LA should receive co ies of any and all legal leadings or documents which reference the WTSDA or WTSDF. If there is an intellectual

ro erty question, such as can I use the WTSDA logo on a t-shirt , can I rint the WTSDA logo on a book I am ublishing , I saw someone not af liated with the WTSDA using the WTSDA logo, what do I do about it or similar, the LA should be

contacted. The LA will also rovide studio owners with information related to the af liation with the WTSDA and the standards and legal rules associated with such af liation. The LA may also be able to rovide you with contact information in your state where you can get jurisdiction s eci c legal advice for matters related to your individual school.

The 20 6 World ham ionshi is just around the corner. Part

of any successful cham ionshi is a well-trained and uni ed judging team of judges, scorekee ers and timekee ers. The Judging

ertification rocess rovides the WTSDA with a vehicle to have uni cation of skilled judges, scorekee ers and timekee ers worldwide. Judging coordinators in all regions have been given all of the necessary materials to train and certify judges including PowerPoint

resentations, judging logs and others. At the 20 4 World ham ionshi , over 400 eo le served as judges, scorekee ers

or timekee ers, with many eo le serving on both days. All judges must be certi ed for a judging assignment.

It is im ortant for all judges to be familiar with and follow the Of cial ham ionshi Rule ook. In March 20 6, a new version of the rulebook was ublished and is now available through

Headquarters. Although these rules are constantly evolving, this rulebook, along with common sense, rovide a foundation for a com etition that is fair to all com etitors. For the 20 6

ham ionshi , these rules will be in effect. Major changes for this version of the rulebook include uniform mandatory oint deductions for restarting during hyung com etition regardless of rank Sah Dan candidates are not allowed to com ete in any area of com etition no matter how minor of cial dobahk must be worn by judges; all members of creativity teams must be registered; ham ionshi u age range is now -34; and clari cation of the contact rule, dae ryun overtime, handling warnings and others. Many of our Region 4 families are familiar with the Scholarship program for college students. With the high cost of college, families are always looking for scholarships to help pay for college. The ongoing Region

4 Scholarship program has helped many students pay for their higher education. Our Scholarship program focuses on the student’s scholastic achievements of the past their plans for the future and their ongoing participation in their Tang Soo Do studio. Those students who work hard to excel in their academic as well as their martial arts studies have an opportunity to earn a scholarship through our program.

This year was a great success for the Scholarship program both for the award recipient and with record setting fund raising as well. Ms. Carol Pettit was the award recipient this year, receiving a check for 1 00 to apply to her Masters in ducation in Mathematics. One of the fundraiser this year was a beautiful quilt made by Ms. Laura wen, which was raf ed off during the tournament. The

winner of the raf e was Sidoharth Tripathi of Austin Karate Academy and the total proceeds from the raf e were 1 16. Additionally, Master Bailey’s Fire Dragon Karate school held a fund-raiser and provided 474 to the Region 4 Scholarship program. We are excited about the possibilities for this program in 201 . So please look for opportunities to support our student’s as they grow.

Porco’s Karate Academy’s Recognized for Spirit of Community

Tang Soo Do is not just a way of life; it is a promise to reach out and touch others through perseverance, respect, and kindness. Porco’s Karate Academy (PKA) was recognized for this by their home in Sandy

Hook, CT. On September 29, PKA was awarded the Spirit of Community Award by the Newtown Youth and Family Services, a thank you for their services and continued support. Present to accept this award were Master Michael Porco, Jr. and Dan Nancy Gilbert who displayed the utmost humility as they accepted this in front of a small crowd at the Rock Ridge Country Club.

Located in the heart of the town, PKA works with the Newtown Youth and Family Services organization. NYFS is a hub for counseling, peer assistance, and strong support for the growing community. PKA has supported them through a variety of events. They have warmed up children for the Newtown Road Race (and run with them in some rare cases). They have raised over 2,000 through kickathons and the youth portion of the Region 9 K Run/Walk for Knowledge. They have encouraged con dence of young ones headed off to school in the NYFS-run program Safety Town. To honor this continuous engagement,

NYFS selected PKA to receive this award. In addition to the award, PKA also received an of cial statement of congratulations from Senator Daniel P. Malloy and a Certi cate of Special Recognition from Senator Richard Blumenthal Through celebration and through sadness, for over thirty years, PKA has remained a never-wavering support. This is for brotherhood, a brotherhood that goes way beyond what we have been taught and into the world we impact every day.

2015 Fall Extravaganza

The 201 Region and Region 3 Fall xtravaganza was held on October 16-1 , 201 in Wisconsin Dells and hosted by Master Mary Tracey and Mr. Saul asley and Master Bob

Grissom and their teams. This event was a rst for our regions in that it was a combined event. Also, a rst was the event being hosted at a resort hotel, the Chula Vista Resort and Waterpark. Both regions were very well represented with over 320 competitors and participants. Adding to the specialness of this event, standing in for Grandmaster Beaudoin, was the embodiment

of Indomitable Spirit, Master Larry Wick.

The weekend began Friday night with Master Larry Wick presiding over the fall cycle Black Belt testing. xcellent performances from candidates of both Region 3 and Region produced over 30 new Cho-Dans, -Dans, and Sam-Dans. Saturday’s performances led to a changing of the guard in the division cup awards. New champions emerged, unseating many longstanding and returning champions.

Championship Cups went to: Male Junior: li Dahl; Female Junior: uiara Wheeler; Adult Male: Michael Grothe; Adult Female: Kaitlyn Kunde; Senior Male: Markus Meunnix; and Senior Female: Tiffani Jones. First place winners in Creative Open Forms: Brian Jansa; Synchronized Forms: Bridgit Jansa and Sohit Thota; Open Contact Sparring: Braden Hinkley and Yusuf Sikander; and Creative Weapons Forms: Jacob Baron and Jairo Guerrero. Demo Team winners were agle Academy in rst place, MG (Grissom) Karate in second place, and Anderson Karate in third place.

Throughout Saturday’s tournament Master Wick was on hand to sign uniforms and t-shirts, take photos and talk with, seemingly, everyone, sharing his remarkable wisdom and perspectives on Tang Soo Do. Always under the watchful eyes of his brother and sister. The regional masters and Master Wick awarded new rst, second, and third dan promotions. Master Mary Treacy’s team hosted the evening. It was an outstanding nder the Sea-themed dinner followed by waterpark time.

Sunday’s clinic was attended by 1 0 participants. One set of sessions focused on Hapkido skills, ground ghting skills, improvised one-steps, and sword skills by various regional masters and black belts. At the same time Master Wick worked with the children on self-defense skills. Then the groups switched and Master Wick worked with the black belts on his Split Second Survival concepts.

At the end of the clinic Mr. Saul asley made Master Wick, now a Minnesota resident, an honorary Wisconsin Badger fan. Mr. asley explained that before one can become an of cial member of the Packer Nation, you must rst become a Badger. Then,

in order to be elevated to full Packer Nation member, you must return to Wisconsin. All present look forward to seeing Master Wick’s return to Wisconsin to become a member of the Packer Nation.Tang Soo!

Region 7 Championship Tournament

A beautiful Indian summer greeted the competitors and guests of the WTSDA

Region 7 Championship Tournament held recently in Myrtle Beach, SC. On Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7, 201 , the crowd gathered at the Crown Reef Beach

Resort for a couple of days of exciting activity and competition. The event of cially began on Friday evening with Grandmaster Beaudoin leading the Region 7 black belts in a work out that challenged their skill and understanding of forms and one-steps. It was followed by a social hour with Grandmaster. Saturday began with vigorous and electrifying competition among the black belts. We were honored to have three visiting competitors - Ciden Manuel from Moz Tang Soo Do in Mozambique (Region 14), Geoffrey Lewis from Region ’s Nova Tang Soo Do, and Pam Gonzalez from Karate Masters in Region 4 provided some stiff competition and represented their regions well!

During the opening c e r e m o n i e s m a n y were honored for their dedication and hard work over the past year. Special awards included: Studio of the year, Scota Karate Academy; Community Service Award, Capitol Tang Soo Do; Instructor of the year, Ms. Kristan Mack, Capitol Tang Soo Do; Student of the year, Mr. Tucker Terrell, Carolina Shin Karate; Family of the year, The Rodriguez Family from Scota Karate Academy; and Fall Dan Test Spirit Award, Mr. Connor Nolan, Scota Karate Academy.

In addition, KCN Beaudoin presented three people with high honors. Ms. Kristan Mack and Mrs. Stephanie Causby both received their 4th degree black belts and are of cially Sah Dan 4th Instructors. As a special treat to all present, Master Giselle Sharpe from Karate Masters, Houston, T attended the event to celebrate with her dear friend, Ms. Mack. Mr. John Francis was promoted to Sah Dan 4th Master. It is with great pleasure and pride that we in Region 7 can now call our friend Master John Francis!

One of the highest callings of a true martial artist in addition to defending the innocent from harm is to care for his/her fellow man in a time of need. In the true Tang Soo Do spirit, the Region 7 Board approved a contribution of 1, 00.00 for

Humanitarian Aid for the ood victims of Columbia, SC. What an honor to be part of an organization that seeks to serve our community as a whole. Master Scota also presented KCN with a

,000.00 check from Region 7 for the WTSDA Building Fund.

We all enjoyed the beginning of a new tradition in Region 7; we had our rst of cial Creativity competition. It was exciting to see the end result of months of planning and practicing on the part of the teams involved. With only a tenth of a point difference in the total scores, Causby Karate Academy from Denver, NC took rst place, while Scota Karate Academy from Greenville, SC came in second. Congratulations to all! The Gup competition followed the Creativity performances and introduced us to many martial artists who are intensely training to become our

next generation of black belts. xcellent showing! The final event of the tournament was the much anticipated awarding of the cups. And the winners were Junior Gup Champion, Henry Ray, Scota Karate Academy; Adult Gup C h a m p i o n , A m a n d a Benwire, Scota Karate Academy; Senior Gup Champion, Rick Schou, Causby Karate Academy; Junior Advanced Gup Champion,Taylon Fan, Causby Karate Academy; Adult Advanced Gup Champion, Gideon Lee,

Saturday night, after a fun time of pizza, music, corn hole and endless ice cream, we all said, till we meet again to KCN and our Region 7 brothers and sisters. As a close-knit group of WTSDA practitioners, our regional events are always an awesome time to strengthen the bonds that we share and have some tough but friendly competition. Region 8 Fall and Winter Championships

Region has been keeping busy with Championships. Our Fall Championship

was held October 16-17, at Split Rock Resort in the Pocono Mountains with Grandmaster Strong as our honored guest. The weekend festivities began on Friday night with the

creativity competition. As usual the competition was entertaining and the audience appreciated every team’s performance with Korean Martial Arts Institute winning rst place. The adult dan divisions rounded out the evening with some erce competition in hyung, weapons and dae ryun. The excitement from the evening carried over to Saturday morning. Opening ceremonies included presentation of the 201 Region Hall of Fame awardees included Humanitarian Award, Master Mike Black; Family of the Year, Mudd family; Studio of the Year, Mimidis Karate; Student of the Year, Cindy Jones; Instructor of the Year, Tom Fletcher; Master of the Year, Master Kevin Robinson and the rst Master Mark Causerano Dedication Award, Master Martha Heise. Scholarship recipients for the 201 Fall were Deborah Vallejo and Austin Miller. Master John Godwin auctioned off a championship poster autographed by the Region Masters that resulted in 300 for the Scholarship Fund. Opening ceremonies were concluded with Dan and Master promotions and demonstrations. Promotions to Sah Dan Master were Master Cathy Hopkins, Master Frank Altiere, Master Susan Strohm (Region 22), Master Geoff Setyanto,

Master Martha Heise, Master rin Watson, and Master Jolene Westgaad. Before Saturday’s competition started, three teams presented a demonstration of the team hyung division that would be featured at the Winter 2016 Championship. The youth Dan, Tiny Tigers, Little Dragons, and all gup divisions completed the weekend. As the cup winners were being tallied, plans were already being made for the next competition. Winners for the 201 Fall Championship were Youth Female Gup, Mackenzie Wilfong; Youth Male Gup, Nicholas Willis; Senior Female Gup, Tara D’ rrico; Senior Male Gup, Kerry Ahem; Adult Male Gup, Matthew Truit; Youth Female Dan, Victoria Yetnick; Youth Male Dan, Jermaine Parks; Senior Female Dan, Marianne Donaghue; Senior Male Dan, Thomas DiGregorio; Adult Female Dan, Samantha Convento and Adult Male Dan, Louis Donaghue. As we said our goodbyes for the weekend, we knew that it was only 4 short months until we meet again.

The 2016 Region Winter classic was held on February 20th at the Delaware Sportsplex in Newark, D . arly that morning 47 competitors gathered to begin a full day of competition. In addition to a new venue, this Championship offered team hyung as a new area of competition. In the team hyung competition, teams of 3 competitors perform a synchronized traditional hyung. In its rst offering, 10 teams stepped up to the challenge. The event was well received and the team from Kaizen Karate won

rst place. The remainder of the day was spent on all divisions of competitions from the Tiny Tigers, Little Dragons, Gups and Dans. The judges, scorekeepers and timekeepers did a great job of handling every group of competitors the Head Table sent to their rings. Amazingly Championship cup results for all 47 competitors was accomplished before 4:00. negros que se llev a cabo 30 de Agosto del 2014. Region 21 Dan Testing

Halloween weekend of 2014, Region 21 posted a black belt test with 27 people testing for advancement on a Friday evening! This was followed by a promotion ceremony on Saturday morning and a weapons-based

clinic hosted by Mr. Rich Defeo, Mrs. Sandra Defeo and Mr. Brian Gourlea of the Moo Do Academy and thos Tang Soo Do! The event went off without a hitch! Master Hicks, the guest instructor traveled from Region six! He shared his expertise and swordsmanship while focusing on cutting and the WTSDA sword forms! A barbecue dinner was attended by

nearly 0 of the participants Saturday evening! The weekend was closed with a Sunday morning training session instructed by Master Hicks on a nearby beach in St. Augustine, Florida! A big thanks go out to all the instructors who taught that weekend especially to Master Michael W. Hicks! Tang Soo!

Region 21 Weighs In!

Master Hutchinson pledged to lose at least 20 pounds in three months or pay 00 to the scholarship fund, In return he asked for Per pound pledges!

Friends from Region , Region 20 and Region 21 pledged various amounts and when all was said and done 32 pounds were lost and over 3000 were raised for the Region 21 scholarship fund! Master Hutchinson thanks all those who supported him in this endeavor!

First Timers - No Problem

As I boarded my plane, I contemplated what I may accomplish over the next four days. I wondered what lessons I might learn, and what new practices I could use to compliment my current Tang Soo Do training. Furthermore, within my being,

I held a very important question, which I needed an answer to. I was embarking on a journey that I assumed would give me an answer to that question. After all, I was about to participate in a weekend of meditation, healing, and energy ow.

This was my rst time attending the World Ki Gong Clinic and as I arrived in Lake Tahoe, I felt a sense of uneasiness, yet I was hopeful. I did not know what to expect and I never met many of the people I would be conversing with over the next three days.I felt a small amount of panic, only to realize there were many people who felt the same way. For anyone who has participated in Ki Gong activities at a Black Belt clinic or other functions, this was above and beyond the traditional basic movements we have been taught. The weekend consisted of Ki Gong basics, Ki Gong forms, educational workshops (natural herbal remedies, mindfulness, microcosmic orbit), deep meditations, breathing practice, accupressure basics, and more advanced levels of practice for advanced students. The weekend inspired each individual to connect with themselves on a deeper level, yet make new friends and establish new energy bonds as well. The clinic provided a framework for beginners, served as a forum for the mutual exchange of information, and provided a unique experience for each and every person who attended. Those in attendance also witnessed a very special event- the World Ki Kong Club, under the nomination, from Grandmaster Beaudoin, elected its rst Level VII red shirts. The weekend also taught me several important lessons. Below I share just a few of many.

Lesson 1- The more you concentrate on seeking a conclusion, the more dif cult it becomes. Lesson 2- All things will make sense, only when I have found peace. Do not seek either in the opposite order. Lesson 3- Only I can truly decide how I am treated and how I treat others. No one else can decide for me. Lastly, recall that question I told you I was looking for an answer? I never found it. I never solved the only puzzle I set out to

solve on my journey across the country. What I did nd was a lot of self-re ection, an ample amount of internal cleansing of my soul, and the notion that despite what path I do decide to take, I will be okay as I walk it, and for that- I am forever grateful.

Ki Gong Um Yang

It was a great end to a great beginning that was a challenging start? Wait, what? October 1 th, 2014 was the end of a great year long Ki Gong training program that introduced dozens of people to Ki Gong, as well as

a day of certi cation for Beginner Instructors! The year-long program had a rocky start. The challenges of overcoming distance, travel time & cost, planning, date coordinating, location, and curriculum were daunting. It was nally overcome with the help of Master Schroeder, and all others involved, including two strong willed & creative (some would say stubborn & crazy) Ki Gong practitioners!

The challenges were actually a good part of the success of the program as everyone involved had to apply the following Tang Soo Do codes & tenets; perseverance, indomitable spirit, no retreat in battle, concentration, & humility. ach School involved had to have a minimum of 2 people to certify, agree to host equal amounts of classes and to promote the program within their student body. Someone had to agree to host the Instructor who would travel (3. hours each way) once a month to hold the 2-hour class. And then there was the commitment to abide by the requirements (forms, reading & technique) of the World Ki Gong Club to advance to Beginner Instructor.

The year was split according to the number of forms introduced for that level. So there were three parts, each 3 months long. ach section covered 1 form, general technique & theory, and several different meditation techniques, plus plenty of laughter,

questions and hard work! There were tons of emails, yers for each school, calls, long talks, tough love, & encouragement as well. In the end after all the paperwork was done, and examining complete, there was no denying the joy, pride, empowerment, and eagerness to continue with their own program, among the students within their school!

It gives me great pride to announce the new level 2 & 3 instructors!

2015 World Ki Gong Clinic - Illinois

In north central Illinois, 90 miles west of Chicago, an unusual outcropping of sandstone buttes and canyons rise above the plains on the banks of the Illinois River. This is a spiritual and historic place where Native

American tribes once lived in harmony with nature with abundant shing in the rapids below and plentiful game in the surrounding forests. Today, this area is known as Starved Rock State Park and the site of the 201 World Ki Gong club annual clinic. On August 2 -30th, World Ki-Gong devotees joined WTSDA Grandmasters Beaudoin and Strong for three days of guided development of inner strength development, breathing and healing exercises.

The 46 attendees included non-martial artists and WTSDA members. A record number of WTSDA Masters were in attendance from all over the S and including Master Klaus Trogemann from Germany, the uropean World Ki-Gong leader, and guest instructor Master Bob Manculich. Instructors also included red-shirt level members Master Tim Schroeder, Master Michael Inoshita, Mr. John Robertson, and blue-shirt level members Lupe Thomas, Rolf Gordon, and .D. Francis.

The expansive curriculum set a high bar for the annual clinic and included our traditional World Ki-Gong forms Ki Cho Ki Gong, Hyang Gong I & II as well as Tae Kuk Ki Gong, T’ai Chi Ch’uan, ing-Yi, Bagua, Re exology, Tendon Nei Kung, Pieces of Brocade, Spring Forest iGong, Bo Kun Jahng Soo Gong (Longevity), 12 Points Tapping and Hand Swinging and the challenging Dragon Gate form -- all interspersed with Nature walks in the beautiful surrounding forests and meditation sessions that brought everyone one with nature .

The extensive set of offerings enabled attendees to choose between basic or advanced practices so all levels beginners and experienced practitioners alike were able to attend sessions aligned to their learning needs. Lectures included sessions on Basic Ki concepts, Meridian Theory, The Five Phase Theory and Clinical ses of Five Phases. On top of all these riches, attendees experienced an amazing meditation session, led by Yolanda Lozano, featuring Singing Bowls that release strong tonal vibrations to enable deep relaxation and inner healing. An additional extra-curricular educational session on the formal Chinese Tea Ceremony led by foremost tea expert Dan Robertson was a fascinating cultural experience in addition to tasting some rare and amazing teas!

With all these energy-building activities, attendees left refreshed and energized. Many commented on how this year’s clinic brought not only breathing and healing, but also the added dimension of the application of Ki-Gong techniques to martial arts practices weaving together the two separate but related disciplines.

The camaraderie and sharing was once again a highlight of the gathering. Many recalled when Kwan Chang Nim Shin rst introduced the Ki-Gong practice into a WTSDA Masters’ Clinic almost two decades ago. For many of us, this started us on this journey of guided practice in recognizing and enhancing energy ows in the body and channeling them through breathing, mediation and relaxation for healing and energy development. Be on the lookout for the dates and location of the 2016 Ki-Gong clinic tentatively scheduled for the last weekend of August. It is an event not to be missed!!
