A message from the PRESIDENT

As President of Fitness New Brunswick I would like to welcome you to the 23rd Annual Fitness NB Personal Training and Fitness Summit. This year’s theme is “The Future of Fitness”. The fitness industry is at an exciting time as more and more people, no matter what age, are realizing that being active is important to a long, healthy lifestyle. As fitness leaders, we are seeing more active seniors joining our classes. Many people are looking to become more active so that they can help boost their energy, maintain their independence, protect their heart, and manage symptoms of illness and pain as well as help manage weight. Regular exercise is also good for mind, mood and memory. People at all ages, are also very interested in functional fitness so as fitness leaders you tend to plan your workouts with those things in mind for your clients either as a personal trainer or group fitness instructor. People also have busy lives so they are looking for a quick, fun, effective, intense workout so that they do not have to spend hours in the gym. Our goal as fitness leaders is to provide programming that will meet their needs so that they live independently for as long as possible, increase self-confidence and to help motivate people so their future is healthier. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Province of New Brunswick – Sport and Recreation Branch through the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture for their continued financial support as without the grant that we receive, Fitness NB could not exist. To our sport consultant, Jamie Shanks, who has guided Fitness NB so that we strive towards similar goals that the government is trying to achieve and to continue to strive to meet Fitness NB’s vision – “Healthy, enriching physical activity for every New Brunswicker, every day.” Thank you to all the staff and fellow board members of Fitness New Brunswick for all of their hard work and dedication over the past year. I would like to thank our Board members for all of their time and valuable feedback and work over the past year and wish you continued success in the years to come. Thank you to all of the Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers for all of the work that you do throughout the province. Your dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated. New Brunswickers are becoming healthier and better educated about the importance of being active because of you. You are great role models throughout the province and we thank you for contributing to a healthy New Brunswick. Thank you for being here today as certification and continuing education is so important. We hope you enjoy the 23rd Annual Fitness NB Personal Training and Fitness Summit and this summit motivates you to revolutionize the “Future of Fitness.” To the Future,

Dayna Sinclair

About US

Fitness New Brunswick (FNB) is a not-for-profit, volunteer driven organization dedicated to the development and promotion of fitness and active living in New Brunswick.

We are a membership based organization that consists of over 200 certified fitness professionals

As a not-for-profit volunteer organization FNB receives some funding from the Province of New Brunswick. FNB works together in partnership with a consultant from the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture to advocate healthy active living in NB.

Fitness NB acknowledges and thanks the Province of New Brunswick for their continued financial support and hope to develop further partnerships in the future.

Fitness NB is a Member of the National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA) which is a Canadian partnership of provincial not-for-profit organizations dedicated to developing, promoting and implementing national standards for training and certification of fitness leaders

in Canada. By becoming FNB certified, you will join over 10,000 leaders across Canada certified within provincial certification associations.

The NFLA is recognized by The International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPS). ICREPs members operate in 4 continents, over seven countries, and collectively register over 60,000 individual exercise professionals. ICREPs has also produced a matrix that maps each ICREPs member’s registration levels against

the others, which provides a clear pathway for exercise professionals considering moving countries. Our connection to ICREPs furthers our goals by providing international portability and recognition for Canadian exercise professionals and by allowing us to share best practices and information with international partners.

As a Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Bronze Certified Affiliate FNB provides representation, regional news, networking, and professional development opportunities for CSEP members in Atlantic Canada.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS

7:30 – 8:45 pm (Note: Later start time to get to Richard. J. Currie Center)

(1A) Keiser Cycling: Music, Games & Drills that will thrill! Krista Popowych (UNB Reilly Family Spin Room: Richard J. Currie Center) Putting together cycling classes that keep students engaged and challenged can be difficult for most instructors. But knowing a few tricks can help you organize and execute a memorable ride. Beginning with a playlist selection that connects music with energy-demands followed by the correct balance of drills and games creates the perfect formula for cycling success. If you are ready to play, we are

ready to deliver in this idea packed session.

7:15 - 8:30 pm.

(1B) Exercise is the Best Medicine for Everyone Even Children: Dr. Martin Sénéchal (Kent)

The prevalence of chronic diseases increased dramatically over the last decades, and New Brunswick is no exception. Obesity and Type 2 diabetes rose significantly and are now constant challenges for health care provider, nurse practitioner, and exercise specialists. Exercise is a corner stone to treat chronic conditions, including obesity and Type 2 diabetes, however despite the seemingly ubiquitous reports about the benefits associated with regular exercise, recent research has brought forward evidence of exercise ‘non-responders’. Furthermore, obesity has been linked to cardio-metabolic risk factors however some obese individuals are free from typical cardio-metabolic risk factors despite high adiposity level, what a paradox! Comprehending why one favorably responds to an exercise intervention or not or understanding how obese individuals might stay healthy is important for adequate individualization of obesity and Type 2 diabetes treatment. Interestingly, the explanation for this heterogeneity or this paradox has yet to be alleviated, and has led to some debate. This talk will focus on the current knowledge of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, exercise response, metabolically healthy obese individuals, and argue why exercise is the best Medicine for everyone including children. (1C) Restful Yoga: Wendy Solange Hamelin (Chancellor’s) Experience this slow paced Restful Yoga Session that blends gentle yoga poses, breath work and meditation to enhance the restorative experience. Restful Yoga can be beneficial to those clients that are seeking a slower, deeper practice for stress release or to address immobility concerns.

SATURDAY October 14

7:00 am Registration Opens (100A) 8:00 – 9:00 am Welcome & Key Note Address: Krista Popowych (Kent)

BREAKOUT SESSIONS

9:15 – 10:30 am (2A) The Functional Training Facelift: Krista Popowych (STU) Functional training continues to be a training buzzword and for good reason. Functional movement patterning is critical to keeping clients fit, healthy and injury-free. The ideal training ground starts with a systematic approach and continues with an effective training paradigm. Take away lots of ideas that can be done on an assortment of small equipment and the most functional piece of all, your body. Challenge your clients with a functional facelift that will enhance performance and results.

(2B) Weight loss coaching: More than “Eat less, Move more”: Nicole LeBlanc (Kent) Sponsored by Fredericton Direct Charge CO-OP

98% of people who diet fail. 68% of people who diet will regain more weight than they lost. Clients are often given a blanket “eat less, move more” recommendation or think that’s the answer. There are other elements that play into successful weight loss, and helpful coaching. In this session there will be a review of metabolism and the adaptive processes the metabolism sets in place to “protect” itself from losses of body fat. You will learn practical information about meal balancing, how to determine if someone is really hungry and skills that are important for long-term success.

(2C) Unfold the Hold! Adaptive Stretching Techniques to Maximize Benefit and Minimize Strain: Alina Cress (Chancellor’s Room)

Flexibility and mobility work is an important component of training classes and programs. But what do you do when someone is not able to get into the instructed stretching position? In this workshop style session, learn techniques to modify and adapt common stretches. Focus will be placed on reducing stress on major joints, such as hips, shoulders, and knees through implementation of chairs, straps, lifts, and balance supports. The goal of this workshop is to provide fitness professionals with tools to increase the overall impact of a healthy stretching routine and improve the experience of a wide variety of participants! This workshop is suitable for everyone, especially those working with older adults and movement-impaired individuals.

10:30 – 11:00 am Trade Show & Networking 11:00 am – 12:15 pm

(3A) Let’s Just Step: Krista Popowych (STU O’Keefe Centre) We love it - - and yes many of us still teach step classes. Join Krista as she takes you through your paces in this free-style, super fun, choreography filled step session. Krista will provide you with proven ways to break down patterns for participant success while keeping the movement, flow and intensity high. Fill your step toolbox with new combinations and a fun, fresh take on your favorite step moves.

3B) Creating a Successful Older Adult Program: Alina Cress/Caitlin Doyle (Kent) Sponsored by UNB URec

It’s no secret that Canada, specifically New Brunswick, is getting older and the demand for appropriate older adult fitness options is on the rise. Learn from UNB’s Alina Cress and Caitlin Doyle the fundamental principles behind Older Adult Programming. This includes range of program offerings, medical forms, participant consultations, staff qualifications, marketing tools, and provincial partners. This session is to help you build – or enrich – successful fitness programs for older adults.

Page 11: Wu Conference Centre & STU J.B. O’Keefe Fitness Centre – Fredericton, NBfitnessnb.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/FNB-2017-Su… ·  · 2017-10-10Wu Conference Centre & STU J.B.

SATURDAY October 14 (Continued) 3C) Increasing Energy by Unblocking Potential: Maureen O’Hara (Chancellor) During the course of our relationships with our clients, progress can become slow or stalled at times. One of the roles of a coach/trainer is to help the client identify the “blocks” and determine strategies to overcome these blocks and help our clients progress past them toward their goals.

In this workshop, we will learn about the “Seven Levels of Energy” and how their interplay. We will also study the “Big 5 Blocks” and the behaviors that accompany each of these blocks. We will discuss strategies for helping our clients to become self-aware and to recognize and overcome the blocks that are ultimately standing between them and the achieving of their goals.

12:30 – 1:45 pm Fitness New Brunswick AGM (Kent)

2:00 – 3:15 pm (4A) Dumbbells Revisited: Wendy Hamelin (STU O’Keefe Centre) Is the dumbbell the most underutilized piece of equipment in most gyms now? Perhaps, other than the “almighty” biceps curl, bench press or flyes, learn high-energy exercises and formats that challenge the body in different ways. You will be able to incorporate these into your clients’ programs or group fitness classes right away.

(4B) A Lasting Impression: Krista Popowych (Kent)

What kind of impression do you make in your classes? Do you rock out your workouts and fill the studio? In this session we will break it down and give you the how-to’s of being a fabulous and memorable instructor. Join Krista Popowych, internationally and reward recognized presenter as she shares real life tips of creating a fitness class that is excellent from start to finish. Improve your teaching style, crank up the studio environment and create a lasting impression!

(4C) Shake up your Aqua Warmup: Line Marr (Chancellor’s) As an aqua fitness instructor, you already know the value of a warm-up. Let’s remember what the warm-up is intended to do - increase circulation and prepare the body for the work ahead. With a little creativity and skillful instruction, you can engage participants from the start. With a little time and effort, a really good warm-up can create amazing energy and set the tone for the rest of class. Join Line Marr to explore ways to “shake up” your warm-up and leave the session with a fully scripted outline! 3:15 – 3:30 am Trade Show & Networking 3:30 – 4:30 am Summit Finale and Wrap Up, “The Icing On the Cake”:

Krista Popowych (Chancellor’s) Do you value a great end of session stretch? After discussing some of the key elements of flexibility training, fascial lines and effective stretch sessions, experience various stretching sequences that flow together in a manner that makes sense and feels great. Reach a heighten sense of self-awareness that will ultimately improve your, your participants and clients and overall well-being. Stretching truly is the icing on the cake.

Dr. Martin Sénéchal (Fredericton, NB) Dr. Sénéchal did a bachelor and a master in kinesiology from University of Sherbrooke. He did his Ph.D. in gerontology investigating the impact of muscle strength on cardiometabolic health of obese individuals. Dr. Sénéchal did a first postdoctoral fellowship at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) in Louisiana. His second postdoctoral fellowship was performed at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) in Winnipeg, were he spent three years. Dr. Sénéchal is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in Fredericton and a Certified Exercise Physiologist from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP-CEP). He joined the Faculty of Kinesiology July 1st 2015 and teaches Pediatric Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology. Dr. Sénéchal’s research interests focus on the impact of physical activity and exercise training on cardiometabolic health in obese individuals. More specifically, his research program encompasses three pillars. The first pillar aims to understand why some obese individuals experience benefits from exercise while other obese individuals do not display these benefits from the same exercise intervention. A better understanding of these predictors as well as the mechanism of such an exercise response will help designing appropriates intervention for obese individuals. The second pillar aims to identify predictors and understand why some obese individuals remain healthy despite high adiposity levels. Therefore, understanding different obesity phenotype might offer a more comprehensive way to manage cardiometabolic health. The third pillar aims to develop community programs to increase physical activity among individuals, especially obese youth.
