The LICOA Grand Prix was a great success! By Lloyd R.

We held the inaugural LICOA Grand Prix at Pole Position Raceway in Farmingdale on the evening of March 19, 2015. It was definitely a great time had by all. As this was our first indoor go-cart racing event, none of us really knew what to expect, but I think everyone agrees it was a great experience. Most of the participants were fellow LICOA members, but we also had some invited guests and some spectators. We had a total of 25 racers (including two women) divided into three groups (two groups of eight, and one of nine). Each group ran three separate heats. The first heat was a practice run so everyone could get a feel for the carts and the track. The second heat was a time trial, where the idea was to score the best individual lap time among the racers in your group. Our best lap times averaged 30.5 seconds. After the second heat, everyone took a moment to grab some pizza and compare notes. The final heat was a race to the finish line, and everyone was started from a standing grid, determined by lap times achieved in the time trial heat. The three best racers of the final heat in each group were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals (there were nine medal winners in all). While the carts didn’t seem that fast to the spectators watching from the sidelines, everyone agreed that the carts were much faster than they looked when you were behind the wheel, negotiating hairpin turns, trying to minimize your understeer while accelerating through the exit of your turn. The narrow turns certainly made it more challenging to pass other racers. The racing got to be pretty spirited. There were spin-outs and crashes, a smashed barricade and some of the carts were taken out of commission. The competition was especially intense in the final heat, when we were told that there would be no warning flags, and the first to cross the finish line would be the winner. When all was done, there were some bumps, bruises, and sore bodies, but everyone left with a smile and plans to return for more racing during the next LICOA Grand Prix event. When will it be? Stay tuned! Congratulations to all of our medal winners: Bronze – Mike Sandano, Sergio Srica, Tom Donato; Silver – Arthur Clark, Michael Fazio, Chuck LaSalla; Gold – Christopher Magistro, Scott Stange, Lloyd Rosen. Thanks to all who participated, and to those who came to watch the racing, and thanks to Tom D. who co-chaired the event and helped make it a success.

I always wanted to go with my brother Russ when he went drag racing with his friends with their cars down the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway but my brother would always tell me I had to stay home. So one day when he wasn't looking I managed to jump in the back seat of his car and hid on the floor - after he got on the Expressway I popped up and surprised him and he laughed shaking his head back and forth. From that day on he knew he would always have to take his little sister with him whenever he went drag racing because he knew how mesmerized I was by it all and how I loved his souped up muscle car so much. I always loved watching my brother Russ and his friends take off down the street in their cars Burnin' Rubber and Liten 'em Up!. Many years passed and my brother Paul who was the original owner of his 1969 Olds 442 decided to sell it but I pleaded with him not to sell it because I loved it so much. My brother Paul said, "Jayne being you love my 442 so much, I am going to give it to you for free". I was in a state of happy shock (my brother is so nice). When I started to fix up and customize my 442 the way I wanted my brother Paul decided to add things to it that he always wanted on his car so now we both began to customize the 1969 Olds 442 together (442 stands for four barrel, four speed, duel exhaust). In the process we both became car designers and turned the original stock car into a Unique Custom Classic. My brother Paul uniquely designed and built duel hood scoops and designed front and rear wing spoilers. No car in the world had a front wing spoiler like my brother designed he hand molded a front wing spoiler that he built right into the duel hood scoops and he molded the rear spoiler into a Two Tier design.

Our Unique Custom Designed duel hood scoops exceeded all 442 manufacturing criteria. We made them 4 feet long, 4 inches high with duel air inlet scoops. The two tier rear spoiler has a 4 foot wide lower wing that is 8 inches wide and a 4 foot long upper plane that is 2 inches wide. Plus I added other custom work chrome header side pipes, deep dish chrome mag wheels, Pro Trac Racing Tires - 50 Series (the rear tires are 12 inches wide and two feet high) Then I had the original 442 engine rebored to accommodate 8 large massive pistons and I put in a high performance cam shaft making it into a 400 cubic inch engine with 455 horsepower. My completely redesigned Custom Classic Muscle Car engine now had duel headers, oversized pistons, a high performance cam and four barrel Quadra Jet carburetor and I won a Trophy Award for it.

I still own my “Custom Classic 1969 Olds 442” today. I will never sell my "Mean Machine". The Muscle Car Era has given the world some of the "most cool collectible vehicles".

In fact my brother Russ owned a very rare 1966 (1/2) 4 Speed Mercury Cyclone GT Drag Racer only 8 were ever made for that year. It had a 427 experimental engine which was only put in the 1/2 year cars and it had to be held down with big chains because the torque was so great. When my brother Russ sped off with the Cyclone the front wheels would lift up off the ground. Years later it was bought by Jay Leno for his car collection.

My brother Russ now owns a 2001 Ford Mustang which is completely customized with a 515 hp Coyote engine with a stage 4 high-performance cam.

I loved the Muscle Car Era it was really the greatest period in automotive history. Muscle Cars represented the ultimate symbol of freedom and independence and came to define an entire generation in America.

I consider myself very lucky to have shared in the joy that era brought to millions and to have been a part of a "once in a lifetime experience". And when I start up my Custom Classic 1969 Olds 442 today and hear the engine "roar" I know he is still that same "Super Power Mean Machine" he always was ... then I step on the gas to give it a few rev's and the headers emit that "classic sound" which brings back some great memories and still gets the immediate attention and excited compliments from a new generation who was deprived of the free spirit and independence the Muscle Car Era represented.

I was really into the brute force fast cars of that era and I also always wished I could buy a Corvette which to me was the ultimate representation of a powerful classic sports car with the addition of elegance. It wasn't until I got older that I got my first ride in my brother Russ' friend's brand new Blue Corvette he had just bought. I really loved the Corvette and said to myself, “I wish I could own a Corvette of my own some day”. Just when I began to think my dream of owning a Corvette would always be Just a Dream ... on April 18 of 2014 my Dream of owning my very own Corvette finally became a "Reality". I bought a torch red 1990 Corvette. On driving my Corvette home I couldn't believe it was really mine - I was finally a Corvette owner! I then said to myself I'm going to paint my Corvette “Pink”, put on a “High End Rear Wing Racetrack Spoiler” and add “Chrome Side Pipes" but this was the first year they dropped the suspension on the Corvettes and side pipes weren't made to fit on the car but my brother Paul knew how much I wanted those chrome side pipes and he said, "Jayne I could build them for you and get them on your Vette and so he did. ... My Corvette is now "RACETRACK READY”!!!

When I first saw my "Pink" Corvette come fresh out of the paint shop ... I knew I made the right decision. As I drove my freshly painted "Pink" Corvette home that Friday night for the first time a Blue Corvette pulled up next to me and

Go to the website www.mygmdiscount.com and register. Most local credit unions participate in the program.

Build a vehicle to your exact specifications – and view the Credit Union Member Discount Price and MSRP by following the prompts.

To take advantage of this opportunity, you must request an authorization number. Authorization numbers may be requested for the purchase or lease of an unlimited number of vehicles per calendar year and are valid for six (6) months from the date of request.

For a new corvette, the Credit Union discount is 9% off of MSRP which is comparable to the GM supplier discount. The amount of the discount varies on the type of vehicle you are purchasing or leasing. Not every dealership accepts the Credit Union discount so you have to check with the dealer. At the current time this discount does not apply to the Z06. The Credit Union discount can’t be combined with the points on a GM credit card.

I found out about this discount last year on the Corvette Forum.

My 1990 C4 Top Replacement-Update by Mike A. I received the top from Thompsons Astro Tops within two weeks of placing the order. The top came with illustrated instructions for the installation. The adjustments were simple and easy. Once the adjustments were made the top fit perfectly. I took the car for a test ride, there were no problems with the top. The top has a one year warranty. Thompsons Astro Top was very nice in helping with the order and put the $200.00 rebate back on my credit card within a week after sending the old top back to them. I saved over $500.00 by choosing Thompson Astro Tops. I just want to say that any member that has an issue or questions about their Corvette should ask a member of the club. If I did not ask questions I would have paid over $1000.00 for my replacement top. Please note that I would like to thank Rick Erdody, Clif Nagel & Sergio Srica for all their help in this matter

Corvette Evolution‐ Rick Erdody  Being in our club for 25 years, I have seen the evolution of the Corvette change with each era. During my time in, we have gone from the C4 to C7 with each era being a little more exciting than the previous. Many of our members own C1’s through C7’s. Keeping in mind model years represent 1953 through 2015 with our membership owning virtually all eras produced so far. From the 1953 beginning with the 150 hp Blue Flame Six to the 2015 Z06 with the 650 hp Supercharged LT4 we have relished each  era.   Looking back to the introduction of the 4th generation‐C4, Chief Engineer Dave McClellan gave us a completely revamped Corvette. When you study the C4, it represented a shift from the conventional steel frame C1 thru C3 chassis design. McClellan incorporated a lightweight aluminum unichasis design for the first time in a Corvette. This was a complete departure from the previous eras along with an electronic LED dashboard.
