From the Pastor May 3, 2020

Several weeks ago we were in the midst of a series on Ages of the Interior Life. This week I’ve decided to pick up where we had left off, the first stage of the interior life, called the purgative age. The purgative age begins with an initial

conversion, an encounter/experience that leads one to desire divine intimacy. The manifestation of this conversion is threefold: 1) an intentional, dedicated prayer life, 2) a focus on rooting out personal sin, and 3) a desire to do good works. Though this initial growth is a blessing, there are pitfalls and temptations in the purgative age that can either slow or completely arrest one’s progress: sentimentalism, overcommitment, and pride. Regarding the first, prayer is generally easy in this stage because it is filled with emotion. One experiences intense sorrow for sin, gratitude for God’s mercy, and peace in His presence. The soul begins to weigh the quality of its prayer based on the intensity of emotion. One confuses the consolations of God with the God of consolation. As a result, when God begins to invite the soul to move from spiritual childhood into spiritual adolescence, when He begins to replace the milk with solid food (1 Cor. 3:2), the soul becomes distressed. Consequently, one may begin to chase the fleeting feelings associated with prayer, not the God who granted them. If this continues unchecked, two things may occur. One possibility is that the soul, desiring the sweet feelings it previously associated with prayer, will seek to find them in new ways—

falling into a perpetual cycle of rotating devotions, more emotionally intense worship, or esoteric forms of prayer. At best, those trapped in this cycle will remain, indefinitely, in spiritual infancy. At worst, the soul may begin dabbling in prayer practices either alien or hostile to the truth of the Gospel—eastern mysticism or occult practices. The second, and, by far the more common consequence for one who falls into the trap of spiritual sentimentalism, is that having spent some weeks or even months trying to recapture those initial sweet feelings by means of one’s usual devotions, one ultimately becomes frustrated and disillusioned. As a result, the soul abandons its dedication to prayer altogether. The safeguard against the trap of sentimentalism is both uncomplicated and hard—fidelity. After establishing a routine of prayer appropriate to one’s state in life, the soul should change nothing during periods of aridity, but faithfully stay the course. Spiritual authors have likened this aspect of prayer to many couples’ experience of marriage. The relationship begins with an exciting and emotional period of romance. It transitions into the ordinary and routine. It often encounters difficult times of scant emotional intimacy. However, if the couple remains faithful to one another, their relationship can ultimately mature into a mutual, deep, and abiding love. As is the case with human intimacy and relationships, so, too, with divine intimacy and prayer. Next week, we will continue to examine the pitfalls of the purgative age of the interior life.

Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever!

In Christ,

Fr. Nicks

HOPE BENEFIT Hope Fundraiser Dinner & Auction - EVENT CHANGED!

WWCS Friends and Families- HOPE 2020, an “Enchanted Night of HOPE,” was originally scheduled for April 25th. This annual fundraiser dinner and auction provides tremendous support for our schools and tuition assistance for our families. As you may have already anticipated, we will NOT be moving forward with HOPE on that date. Fortunately though, the Walla Walla Catholic Schools Association of Alumni and Friends has their 5 YEAR ALL SCHOOL REUNION coming up this summer, and they have agreed to let us merge with them and bring aspects of HOPE into that weekend’s events. It will be one BIG party celebrating our schools’ great history and bright future held at DeSales High School! Mark your calendars now for Saturday, June 27th, and watch your mailbox for more details as we work hard to create this new event. If you already received an invitation to the June event, those details will not change. See you there!

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in

the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into

my soul. Since I cannot at this

moment receive You

sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my

heart. I embrace You as if You

were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated

from You. Amen.

CRS Rice Bowl - “We are acutely aware that our parishes are not enjoying their usual communal life. We appreciate that it may be some time before we resume our usual liturgical practices and schedules. As you are able, we ask that you return your Rice Bowl to your parish, whether in April or later. Your contributions representing your fasting and alms giving are always appreciated and needed. “ CRS Please mail in your donation to your parish, marking your check in the memo as CRS rice bowl. Or you may take your rice bowl to either Assumption or St. Patrick churches (not offices) during their open hours and put them in one of three marked parish boxes. CELEBRATE EARTH DAY and the 5th anniversary of Pope Francis' LAUDATO SI: Protect life. Preserve that which sustains life. Care for our common home. Earth Day is only one day in the year (April 22) but the care and concern for our earthly home is a never ending challenge. The USCCB states: Grounded in our Catholic Tradition, now is the time to protect the earth for our children and grandchildren. PRAY to hear God's call to live our faith for the common good, knowing that everything is interconnected. LEARN how the climate crisis is a profound moral issue greatly affecting the poor and vulnerable. TELL your local and national leaders to protect creation. Praise be to you, our Lord, God of all Creation! God of all creation, your goodness and glory shine forth through everything you have made.

Through the light of faith, help us to see this world, our common home, not as a resource to dominate and exploit,

but as a gift to be cherished by all generations. Prompted by your Spirit, we ask this in the name of Jesus, through whom

all creation was made. Amen. Prayer from Catholic Charities

PRAYER FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors re-member those most vulnerable. May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health and making their rent. May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close, remember those who have no options. May we who have to cancel our trips remember those who have no safe place to go. May we who settle in for a quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love. And during this time when we may not be able to physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.

We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you

did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our

families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of

those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus

to our land and to our hearts. Amen..

TRI-PARISH DIAPER DRIVE There is now a Baby carriage in the back of Assumption Church to make donations of diapers and wipes for Catholic Charities and other agencies in town that are in need of

THE MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
