“I will lead the charge” Knoxville, 1863
“I will lead the charge” Knoxville, 1863
By Jose Hernández
Recently, I spent an awesome weekend in the Leganés show, dur ing which, besides enjoying the company of friends and fellow modelers, I had the pleasure of seeing again the “b unch” of H&V. The most evident “result” of thisencounter was the pleasure to get the painting commission of this relea se of the “Fahrenheit Miniature Project”series, sculpted by Eduard Pérez, that immediately captivated my i maginati on because of the sculpture and the American Civil War period (1861-1865) that really fascinates me. Sh ortly after my retur n from Madrid, I received aresin copy at my workshop.
Building up the miniature:
The kit’s build up is really easy, as its fittings are very good and has few pieces. The only thing I did was to fill the irishole in the eyes and reduce the thickness of the sword’s blade. Thes e two points come already mended out of thebox in later copies.
After priming with grey spray paint and planning the break up for the p ainting st age, I airbrushed the color basecoatson the flesh, jacket, boots and coat in at least a couple of tones. That would make easi er the later work with oils, thesystem used in all the miniature’s painting process.
An d then, while I w as li stening the suitable music CDs (The C ivil War, The South rides again, etc…), I decided toportray our infantry captain at the moments before a charge, showing in his face the fatalism for facing his destiny. That’s the origin of the title: “I will lead the charge”. Probably, there are no more options left, having lost the companyall senior commanders.

Painting:
Here can already be seen the sketch work on face, jacket and officer sash with oils, I would come back later to them, once the figure was more developed, to finish the details. The stare and gesture were already the ones I wanted toportray the mood of the character so… Let’s go!

Coat fitting:
Once I glued the coat with the right arm, done the basic tones on the boots and belt with the revolver on its holster, the miniature showed all its glory. It’s simply awesome, a real person and not only a well sculpted doll. Here, thecoat lining still appears in ivory white. It would be changed later to “infantry blue” in order to frame the arm andadding a color note to the whole thing. looking for information, besides a beautiful Don Troiani painting that showsthis combination, I found the same coat with red lining for artillery and yellow lining for cavalry, so it’s possible todecorate it in some other ways.

Left hand with “Bummer cap”:
The clearly French inspiration first pattern officer cap in already sketched in acrylics. The letter engraving in the beltbuckle can also be seen, “CS” for Confederate States. When there are doubts about the authenticity of one piece,it’s better to look for information at the original sources, instead of reenactment groups material. I drew it withacrylics over the buckle, with its highlights and shadows to add the proper relief.

Painting of the cap and terrain sketch:
The cap was almost finished, in the same color of the coat’s lining, with a different blue than the turnbacks, muchmore lighter and tending to turquoise, the Austrian knots on the sleeves, and the hand’s veins drawn directly over the fresh oil. For the terrain, I wanted something simplified to frame the action. You all know I prefer sober terrains.

Right hand and saber:
With a basic work done with acrylics, I positioned the hand with a small amount of glue and, again, I confirmedagain the perfect fittings of the miniature; I just needed the recreate the acrylic palette in oils, finish the metalreflections, the skin tone of the hand and make the finger nails stand out, that already come sculpted.
I was really close to the end and I was enjoying the whole process. It might sound weird but that’s not very commonin my usual painting work…

Photography trials with ochre and black backgrounds:
I used an ochre and a black background; The first one was in fact the best one so I continued with it. Using the blackone I found out that the red sash was too saturated, so I mended it with some magenta filters. Now it was done!

Final thoughts:
Now that I already had the figure in my hands, finished, varnished and photographed, I thought I wouldn’t mind tokeep on painting it. That would give you an indication of how nice was to do it, so I already have the compromise of painting a Union version… But that is another story!

To finish, I only have to say thanks to Eduard, Fernando Ruiz and Fernando Sánchez (both Fernandos) for thechance of collaborate again with them, thing that I intend to do as long as I can. Also to Pepe Gallardo and JonatánMonerris for their company and enthusiasm during those days in which we decide to start this project, apart fromsharing coffees (and also some beers).
