Queen – In Ancient Egypt a man became a king by marrying the queen. This was because the woman passed on the family blood. If the king and queen had a son and a daughter, the royal blood passed to the daughter. Their son could become king by marrying their daughter.

Slaves – wealthy families usually owned slaves. There were not many of these and they were mostly people captured in foreign wars. Slaves could be beaten or sold but, if they worked hard, they might earn their freedom.

Taxes – the pharaoh had the right to collect taxes from the people. The Egyptians didn’t use money. People paid taxes with crops or other goods, or they were ordered to work on the pharaoh’s building projects.
