Now this has nothing to do with riding your bike uphill. Upcycling is the process of recycling an item into a more useful or beautiful item. It’s also a great exercise in thinking out of the box. Also called repurposing, upcycling projects can be as simple as poking holes in the top of a water bottle to make a basic water sprinkler for ironing, or as complex as taking an old entertainment center and turning into the latest thing in a child’s kitchen fantasy. Or how about a nifty pair of gladiator sandals made from a pair of jeans? Creativity and imagination are the main tools of the Upcycler, though paint and glue seem to come in a very close second. * Glass Vase, glass drops, votive candle & E6000 glue make a beautiful glowing lantern! …or you can use a *Picture Frame with Glass, to make your own stained glass! *Hard Cover Book, exact-o knife & ribbon make a remote control holder the kids (or hubby) will never find! * Brandy snifter, rock salt & holiday miniatures become Christmas in a glass! *Entertainment Center, 4 cds for burners, curtains, framed country photo or print for window, metal bowl for sink, paint, blackboard paint, & elbow grease make a great play kitchen! *Piano, paint, plants, voila!

UPCYCLINGLet’s start this month with adding a new word to your vocabulary; Upcycling.

Walking around the store today, I see a number of projects just waiting for someone to see the possibilities. We’ll start with the easy stuff and end with “Woo hoo! I can’t believe I made that!”

Anything you find at NHS Second Chance may just become your next creative project!

Our Non-Profit Resale Roundup with New to Youwas a rip roarin’ success!

We corralled a bunch of great deals, added a herd of goodies, some liquid refreshments,

turned loose our ranch hands and let the party take over the spread!

Suzy Groff’s ma, Miss Lydia, was with us for a great portion of the day.

She’s a young at heart cowgirl and we love her dearly!

Thanks to all of our Volunteers and Customers for making it a great day!

Saturday, October 24th was a busy day here at NHS Second Chance!

We joined forces with nine other island resale shops for a day of progressive shopping, sales, fun and in our case, home-baked goodies! It was a day of rapidly revolving doors as donated items came in and went out of every entrance and egress of the shop. I know the usual question is “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” but in our case it was more a matter of how much furniture can pass through a double door while dodging customers munching cookies, cupcakes, juggling punch and punching cards for those after the grand prize. Did I mention the doors all have two way traffic? Did I mention dodging herds of newly adopted and newly donated furniture is a cardiovascular exercise comparable only to attempting to contain a pair of four year old human puppies after they split a liter of Coke Classic? Despite the moments of sheer terror, it was a great day full of fun, laughs and enough purchases to keep our Fur People at the Nassau Humane Society Shelter safe and healthy for another month (or two!).
