Health Disparities Research (HDR-LRP)Encourages health professionals to engage in basic, clinical or behavioral research directly relevant to health disparities issues.
The program seeks to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals in research careers that focus on minority health disparities research related to the medically underserved.
The HDR program serves as an avenue for NIH to engage and promote the development of research programs that reflect the variety of issues and problems associated with disparities in health status.
Extramural Clinical Research (ECR-LRP)Encourages health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds to conduct clinical research. The emphasis on “clinical research”and on individuals from “disadvantaged backgrounds” highlight the need for the involvement of a cadre of physician scientist in clinical research to strengthen the twenty first century biomedical and behavioral workforce.

NCMHD Community-Based Participatory Research Activities
This subcommittee will provide advice to the OCBPRO. It has nine members from academe and community-based organizations with expertise in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and outreach. The subcommittee met for the first time on October 29, 2004 at NCMHD. It will meet twice a year with regular conference calls and e-mail communications in between the meetings.

STRATEGIC PLANNING SUBCOMMITTEE
Develop RFA to examine the interface between physical and psychosocial environments and their impact on health with special emphasis on racial and ethnic minority populations; start with 2 year planning grant, followed by a 5 year CBPR intervention grant, and another 5 year continuation/dissemination grant.
Fund training grant – two year postdoctoral fellowship on CBPR
Develop a community-based participatory research (CBPR) guide.

Short Term Recommendations
Fund training grant for junior faculty and community partners (e.g. continuing education, multiple sessions over time, with seed money for pilot CBPR projects)
Develop RFAs for CBPR studies on cultural determinants of health disparities; CBPR research methodology; studies on undoing racism in the health systems to increase access to care and quality of care; CBPR studies focus on prevention and addressing system-level factors & determinants across diseases
Fund CBPR partnerships for outreach & dissemination research; CBPR partnerships for sustainability & infrastructure support

Long Term Recommendations
NCMHD Community Participation in Health Disparities Intervention Research
The goal is to support community intervention research studies using CBPR principles to reduce and eventually eliminate health disparities in any disease or condition of major concern to the community (e.g. cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, infant mortality) with emphasis on racial & ethnic minorities
CBPR is defined as scientific inquiry conducted in communities and in partnership with researchers. Community partners have the opportunity to be full participants in each phase of the study (from study conception to dissemination).
This initiative will start with a three- year planning grant, followed by a competitive five-year intervention grant, and conclude with a competitive three- year dissemination grant.

RFA-MD-05-002 NCMHD Community Participation in Health
Disparities Intervention Research The ultimate goal is to support community intervention research on health disparities that is jointly conducted by communities and researchers.
The total amount to be awarded is $ 4.5 million to 5 to 10 grantees.
This RFA will provide support for a three- year planning grant. The first year of the grant is devoted to partnership development, community needs assessment, identifying the disease/condition for intervention research, & planning the intervention methodology. A pilot intervention research study using the CBPR principles will be conducted during the second and third year.
