The 2008 Oral Design Symposium in conjunction with NYU 3rd Annual Ceramic Symposium is presenting “Oral Metamorphosis - The Masters Teach the Art behind the Smile”. The advancement of contemporary Aesthetic dentistry has been primarily based on ceramic development and the clinical usage of it.

It is hard to compete in Aesthetic dentistry without the knowledge of the possibilities of ceramics and the art put into it by the Master Ceramists. Today the ceramist and clinician come together to create and understand the development of light reflective materials that actually mimic nature. This symposium will explore the type of skills and materials used in implant cases as well as, high performance ceramics such as: Zirconia and Alumina. Our Masters will teach the joining of art and science to enrich the knowledge and creativity of Aesthetic Dentistry and transform the lives and smiles of thousands of patients from around the world.

New York University College of Dentistry CDE

April 4th, 2008 (Lectures)

“Aesthetic Harmony”Willi Geller, Oral Design Switzerland

Master ceramist Willi Geller is known the world over for uncompromising aesthetics and his innovations in materials and techniques. Today, aesthetic excellence is attainable with a wide variety of ceramic options; however, using these materials side-by-side can present a unique challenge. Mr. Geller will discuss the materials and techniques he employs for achieving aesthetic harmony in a combination case fabricated with zirconia and metal ceramics.

“Materials and Technique Selection in Aesthetic Dentistry. A Biological Approach”Dr. Giuseppe Allais, DDS, Italy

Due to the demand of restorative dentistry with superior cosmetic results, aesthetic dentistry has dramatically improved over the last 20 years. We now have the ability to create prosthesis with the same appearance of natural teeth. These improvements are correlated to new materials that have optical characteristics close to natural tissue leading to more precise and accurate techniques. There are many materials on the market today that are not yet clinically proven for technicians as well as, practitioners. This presentation will cover procedures and materials that not only stand the test of time, but also create the up most pleasing results aesthetically.

“The Role of the Dental Technician for Establishing Optimal Aesthetics”Jean Marc Etienne, Oral Design France

CAD CAM technologies continue to grow in the dental practice. The range of prosthetic solutions has recently been improved in an aesthetic and innovative way, particularly for cemented and screw-retained zirconia bridges. Designing and manufacturing complex dental restorations combining biocompatible materials, new and digital techniques has become daily practice for the dental technician. Today more than ever, real team methods adopted by the implantologist, prosthodontist and dental technician will lead to great prosthetic satisfaction.

“Ti Implant Componentry, An Alternative Approach”Peter Vryonis, Oral Design Australia

Since 1994 Mr. Vryonis has been manufacturing his own implant componentry. His use of commercially pure grade titanium delivers excellent results both in fit and accuracy. This presentation will cover an alternative to the struggle of correcting implant angulations in the traditional systems that do not always satisfy the challenging case situation.

“White and Pink Aesthetics”Eric van der Winden, Oral Design Netherlands

There are many excellent brands of dental ceramics, each one having its own individual properties and characteristics. Having an understanding of these materials can help you as the technician customize your own restorations. This presentation will aid in the understanding of how to utilize these different material selections, focusing on form, color, surface texture/ luster and soft tissue. Interaction with patients to maintain and obtain light in the gingiva is his central focal point.

“Another Brick in the Wall: Single Crown Restorations in the Aesthetic Zone”Sascha Hein, MDT, Oral Design Australia

The advancements in the field of dental technology over the last two decades have led to the introduction of some of the most sophisticated ceramic systems that are available today. Together with a number of new framework materials, digital shade taking devices and even some entirely new shade guide systems have been presented, in order to aid the ceramist in the ever present challenge of “ getting the color right”. This conflict becomes more and more evident in the much feared single crown restoration in the aesthetic zone. What is it that makes such cases so unpredictable in their outcome and which aspects need to be considered in order to achieve the best result? In this presentation you will be shown a number of clinical cases and discuss the material selection. Comparisons between natural teeth and dental ceramics will also be addressed.

“The Dynamics of Nature in Oral Implantology”Juergen Mehrhof, MDT, Oral Design Germany

The clinical success of Osseo integrated implants has been well documented. As we strive to meet aesthetic demands within the shortest period, this presentation will cover established treatment protocols that permit for a predictable treatment plan and outcome considering both aesthetic and biological factors.Bone morphology, including bone quantity and quality is the leading prospect of all treatment modalities. Surgical procedures to enhance bone volume and prosthetic driven implant placement will be discussed. Case presentations will demonstrate Mr. Mehrhof‘s concept used for aesthetic implant supported restorations including surgical, prosthetic and technical aspects. Preoperative treatment planning will be covered emphasizing on treatment modalities for removable vs. fixed implant supported superstructures.

April 5th-6th, 2008 (Hands-On Course)

Hands-On course given by Willi Geller and The International Oral Design Team

• Single unit Zirconia demonstration only• Laboratory sequencing of the anterior three-unit bridge in the advanced level, beginning with metal framework design to multi layering porcelain build up and contouring using Classic Creation porcelain.

“Mastering Aesthetics & Ceramics for the Advanced Dental Technician: Hands-On Continuum”

at NYU CDE

September 2008 - June 2009 (one weekend per month)Tuition: $9,300 includes Jensen Articulator (payment schedule available)Credit Hours: 210

Building exceptional prosthetic and aesthetic dental restorations requires a solid technical foundation, disciplined planning expertise of materials, and keen practical application. Expertise fundamentally begins with a thorough understanding of the academics and the underlying principles of technical dentistry. Accurate communication and documentation between dentist and laboratory is vital for proper case planning and sequencing. The first half of the course is dedicated to learning how to build an accurate blueprint of casework that will lead to successful results. In the second half of this course science and art converge with “hands-on” education. You will learn the latest advancements in ceramic materials, preparation and application techniques by the leading authorities in the field.
