Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

This week I was tasked, alongside our Chair of Governors and Gillingham’s Mayor Barry Von Clemens, with the very difficult task of judging the Friends Association’s Scarecrow Competition. Thank you to everyone who took part as there were some fantastic entries and everyone deserves to be highly commended for all their creativity and effort. Congratulations to the winning entries - you can see photos of them below.

This week has seen the start of the renovation of our nature garden using the grant we have

received from Dorset Gardens Trust. We are currently working on tidying up the whole area

and our first job is to rejuvenate the pond. We are very grateful to Mr Pollard who has

been working hard removing the brickwork and emptying the pond ready for a new liner.

Kind regards,

Ed Birkett

Woodpecker Class’s News

This week Woodpeckers have continued to think about zoos, and asked the question 'Are they heaven or hell for the animals?' They have considered all of their ideas and written a balanced argument about the subject, using key words and phrases to explain their ideas. In Science they have found out about vertebrates and invertebrates and have used a classification key to identify them in their environments. There were some brilliant drawings of some if the creatures they found. They have also used SwitchZoo

online to create some weird and wonderful new animals. They have continued to practise their French by trying to remember how to say pet names. Finally they have been challenged to set up a circuit at home, using objects and toys at home to create a physical challenge for themselves and someone else at home. All this, alongside continued practise of Maths, Spelling and Reading. Well done Woodpeckers! Mrs Simpson and Miss Driscoll

A message from Mrs de Villiers:

Hi everyone!

This website has lots of ideas of activities for you to try – it’s worth a look, especially for the younger ones.

Here is one of my favourite activities – how to make a t-shirt transfer.

Send us a photo to share if you make one!

Wren Class’s News

This week Wrens have been doing lots of learning about England and what it’s like here. They have learnt whereabouts England is on a globe or world map and can name lots of the physical features we have in England. They know we have beaches but not deserts; we have woods and forests but not jungles; snow and ice but not icebergs…

The children have enjoyed finding out about London and what it’s like there and how cities are different to villages. We have learnt about Saint George and the dragon and enjoyed making swords and shields.

In maths we’ve been doing lots of work on doubling and halving objects and amounts – the children have enjoyed lots of playdough maths – making pretend sausages and pizza and learning how to halve them – making sure both halves are equal and FAIR!

The children had lots of fun having a PE lesson entirely with hula hoops this week. There are SO many things you can do with them! The children enjoyed some games and trying out challenges and then they enjoyed coming up with their own challenges for everyone else to try - some of them were very tricky! We tried hula hooping; rolling and chasing our hoops; trying to jump through them whilst they were rolling(!); using the hoops as targets - on the ground and whilst moving; rolling them along the coloured lines and many, many more! The children had so many ideas and a lot of fun!

What a lovely week of learning we’ve had!

A big THANK YOU to Gillingham School DT Dept for donating several face shields to us, just in case we need them.

Our lovely Lunchtime Leader Mrs Martin made a Twister board for the children, to go with our new Twister board on the playground. THANK YOU, Mrs Martin

Heron Class’s News

It's been another busy week in Heron Class as we welcomed back even more children into school. We took advantage of the lovely weather at the beginning of the week and spent lots of time out-side, playing hockey, cricket and rounders. We continued to design our cushions and some of us even managed to start batiking them. It was a bit nerve wracking to start and a steady hand was needed but great fun once we got used to it! The next step is to paint them with fabric paint. Some fantastic home learning has also taken place from researching mountain ranges, classifying zoo animals and experimenting with oobleck! Another great week Heron Class. Well done!

Kingfisher Class’s News

Kingfishers have been feeling a bit crabby this week! We looked at the Legend of Crab Phare (you can look it up on YouTube if you like the sound of it...) The crab desperately needed to persuade humans to stop building on his back so we wrote letters to ask him to stop. We also did some crabby craft and one clever Kingfisher even crafted a crab biscuit.

There has also been lots of yummy baking going on in the Year 3 households, red velvet cupcakes looked especially deli-cious. One of our home learning Maths jobs was the favourite 'post it' game - you need to guess what the number on your forehead is from the mathematical clues. Is it an even number? Is it a multiple of three? A really fun game for a rainy day!

Owl Class’s News

The Owls are studying different micro-habitats this week. They have found newts, hedgehogs, lizards and butterflies. Some children decided to make homes for animals so there are some lucky hedgehogs and insects out there. Having read 'Meerkat Mail' Owls have been imagining they are Sunny the Meerkat and have written many postcards from different locations, each time writing a little more to develop their writing stamina. They have proved themselves very good at remembering their 2, 5 and 10 x tables too. A week full of wonderful achievements.

Falcon Class’s News

Falcon Class have been busy this week working through their new maths topic... volume! The children have been calculating the volume of various shapes and have also been comparing and estimating volume, and calculating the capacity of various containers.

The Falcons have also designed an engaging and informative leaflet about our Solar System (we imagined that we were designing the leaflet for the science museum in London, to encourage young people to come and have a look at a fascinating new exhibit about our Solar System.) The children in Falcon Class have also been baking some amazing treats and creating designs for Olympic medals and sports kits. What a busy week! Well done Falcons! Mrs Compton

Keyworkers’ Children’s News The children were very busy creating their sketchbooks to fill with all their favourite things (football pictures, cartoons, animals, drawings, sketches, ideas and notes.) The children were very creative and decided to make their sketch books in lots of different shapes including: a heart, ice-cream, triangles, etc.

Some of the children made 3D sculptures of crabs; they thought carefully about the materials they would use and how the eyes and pincers would be rmed. We were really impressed with he enthu-siasm shown by the children, and we are looking forward to next Wednesday when we will be making wire work sculptures. Well done!

Robin Class’s News

We have started our new topic in Robins - Around the World in 40 days. We read the first chapter of the story ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ by Jules Verne and talked about the different countries we would visit.

We have made our passports and packed a suitcase ready for an adventure around the world. In Geography we learnt the names of the seven continents and the five oceans. In Maths we have been practising directions and different turns. We are continuing to work really hard in phonics activities and thinking carefully about spelling patterns. We have been looking at photos of us when we were younger and talking about how we have changed. We've also drawn pictures of what we think we'll look like when we're older! In Maths we've made treasure maps and then given directions to find the hidden treasure! We've had great fun directing each other around the playground and our homes!

ROAD SAFETY Sadly it has been brought to our attention that younger children have been playing out in the local area unsupervised and one had a very near miss with a car this past week. Please be a good neighbour and if you see a child who is not with an adult then please let their parents know immediately.

Small Bottle Tops

Please could you all save your small plastic lids for Mrs de Villiers to use to complete a giant piece of art?

The lids need to be smaller than milk bottle lids but can be any colour. Those from bottles of soft drinks are ideal.

Thank you!
