Dear Parents

Mr Burrell and I were privileged to join 1200 delegates from 46 countries to attend the International Confederation of Principals' conference in Helsinki recently. The theme for the conference was Leading Educational Design. 156 of the delegates were from South Africa, with a large number from our local Cape Town schools.

The Tinmugs Africa Trust charity is a feeding engine

In a letter to Mrs Stokell, Mrs Higgins writes:What a wonderful gift your school gave to the desperately poor children of ‘Overcome’. On behalf of this community, please convey their joy and thanks for lighting up the lives of many children. Small, knitted beanies adorned tight black curls and handsome new jerseys were pulled on over whatever the children wore. The grins were wide as teddies and monkeys were tightly grasped - dare anyone try to sever the instant bond the kids formed with their brand new 'cuddly toy'.

On Saturday, 1 August, a few brave Wynberg Ramblers, went on a scenic, simple walk in De Hel. The group set off chatting merrily only to discover a rather large tree across the path. This of course did not deter the past pupils as they bundu bashed their way through, with Tracy Mills (1990) leading the way and our honourable Chairlady, Diedre Schultz (1978), ensuring we all got through safely before attempting to brave the non-existent path herself. The laughter continued for the rest of what was a very pleasant hour's walk with the hilarity escalating on our return trip when we had, once again, to get across the tree. Thanks to Ann Coltham (1981) for once again co-ordinating a fantastic walk. The Spring walk is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 24 October starting at 3:30pm where we will take on DEVIL'S PEAK & OPPELSKOP. Everybody is welcome to attend.

Azraa Matthews, Tasha Ainsworth and Chelsea Terry, accompanied by Mrs Fraser, attended the University of Cape Town's Forensic Sciences Open Day on Friday, 7 August. It was fascinating to see what is done in each aspect of Forensic Sciences such as Toxicology, Ballistics and Crime Scene Investigation. The girls were able to investigate a crime scene that had been set up for the Open Day, make a copy of their own fingerprints and examine some of the weapons that experts had come across. It was very helpful to ascertain what would be expected of students if they were to enter this field in the future.

HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

The Grade 11 History girls visited the Cape Town Holocaust Centre as enrichment to the prescribed History syllabus and to give us further insight into the horrors that make up this period of history. It was an emotional experience. The visit began with a presentation about the Nazi regime, the principles behind the Holocaust, and the reasons why it is important that we continue to learn about it at school today. Following this, a woman named Maxine spoke to us about her trip to Lithuania during which she visited the small town where a large number of her husband's family members had lived and been killed during the Holocaust. It was both interesting and sad to see, and not surprisingly, the presence that this genocide still has in the town.We were given a very informative tour through the permanent exhibition where we were able to read personal accounts, see artifacts from that time, and pore over countless photographs. Near to the end of the day, we watched a short film about a man who was a child at the time of the Holocaust and it was rather scary to see the extreme indoctrination that took place. All in all, it was a very thought-provoking outing, one that has helped all of us to better understand this important section of History. Meg Anderton

'Look Like a Book Day', celebrating the power of books, was part of English Week, aimed at encouraging learners to read. Events began with an interhouse literature quiz on Tuesday, 11 August and on Thursday, learners came to school as a character from a book. Many teachers also joined in the fun. During assembly, Na-Eela Coleman and Rebekah Nathan each read a story they had written, after which the costumes were judged. 1st place went to Teresa Herbert as Skulduggery Pleasant and 2nd place to Caitlin Cairns as Willy Wonka. Also mentioned were Aa’isha Dout as Marvin the Paranoid Android; Erin Harris as Cindy Loo; Jessica Harris as The Mad Hatter; Jade Burgess as The Joker; Sadé Allcock as Daisy Buchanan; Emily Danielz as Hermione Granger & Nina Devlin as Hannibal Lecter.

THE MAN WHO CAME

And so begins the countdown to the 2015 WGHS and WBHS’ Major Production: THE MAN

WHO CAME TO DINNER, directed

Book your tickets through Mrs Stokell at WGHS : 021-7642204

or email her at [email protected].

All shows start at 19h30.

Since we were little, we've always commemorated firsts - our first steps, our first words, our first day at school - but by the time we reach Matric, the circumstances are reversed and we feel as if we're living our life backwards, with all of the lasts. There is the last assembly, the last time you'll ever wear the Wynberg uniform or the last time you'll see many of your friends - it's a time of lasting memories. On 12 August, we, the Matrics of 2015, set the timer for our last 40 days. We have started the countdown on the Matric wall: 4 years and 8.5 months down, 40 days to go!

40 DAYS! BUILDING BRIDGESOn Saturday 1st August, Clara Stassen, Tayla Fourie and Lara Harris took part in the annual Western Cape Schools' Model Bridge Building Competition. In conjunction with the South Mr Pete Bodenstein with Clara Stassen,

HIGH SCHOOL JAM @ GRAND WEST

On Saturday 22 August, WGHS Jazz Combo took to the stage with WBHS Jazz Band, conducted by Blake Hellaby and supported by Keenan Oliphant and Ms Dayna Pearce. For the fifth year running, the High School Jam Competition gave ten schools of the Western Cape the opportunity to perform. Later on Saturday evening, it was announced that the combined Wynberg band had not only made it to the final with the bands from Paarl Vallei High and Elsies River High, but had also won the spirit prize jointly with Elsies River High School! On Sunday morning, their energy and passion entertained the masses - it was an awesome final perform-ance! The judges placed Elsies River as the winners of the final and expressed how impressed and proud they were of all the performers. Our brilliant drummer, Jamie-Lee Benjamin, was announced as ‘Best School Drummer in the Western Cape’ and received drumming equipment as her prize. The ‘Best Spirit’ prize -

R15,000 worth of music equipment - plus the Overall Runners' Up prize - R10,000 - is to be shared between the two Wynberg schools! At the end of the competition and the final performance, the group expressed their gratitude to their teachers for the many hours spent encouraging, training and stretching them to perform on an entirely new level. The U19A team played against a touring side from Durham, in the UK. Luckily the rain had eased before the game but it was still very wet! Very good defence from both sides made this a close match - 4-3 to Durham at the end of the first quarter. Then WGHS converted two Durham centre passes to gain the lead - half time score 9-7 to Wynberg. The tension mounted - Wynberg 11-10 ahead at the end of the 3rd quarter. The final quarter was a nail-biter. Both teams played excellent netball and the spirit was so good on both sides. It was fitting that the final score was a draw: 14-14. WGHS Players of the Match were Nolitha Macanda, Kagiso Jantjies and Alex Steyn - they were all outstanding! Well done to both teams on this excellent match!

NETBALL vs DURHAM, UK

NETBALL RESULTS

U19B Team won 11-24.In the first half everyone was committed and the team played well. They played textbook netball, scoring a further 13 goals. The Player of the Match was Lauren Wiemers for her incredibly accurate shooting. She and Rachel Gribble also made a superb mini-team within our goal-circle, brilliantly anticipating each other's moves. Well done to all!U19A Team lost 26-27.Due to injuries and illness, the same tired girls then had to play the A team match as well! Wynberg trailed behind FH in the first and second quarters. They were running out of steam. In the third quarter, however, Wynberg somehow found the extra energy and clawed their way back with some superb team-work. The attackers fed the ball into the circle, the defenders applied huge pressure onto the FH players, and our shooters were on fire. When the final whistle blew, we had lost by only one point! What an exceptional netball match. U16A Team won 9-2.Wynberg made it extremely difficult for Fish Hoek to score - our defence played excellently. Although fatigued in the second half, they continued strongly and, with support and encouragment, performed well as a team. Player of the Match was Lara Johnson.U16B Team won 16-4.Wynberg soon found their rhythm and were leading at half time. After half time, they secured the majority of centre passes by working as a unit and won the match convincingly. Player of the Match was Zoe Benson.U14A Team lost 8-11.Both teams were determined to win, and the score was level at half time. The defence was superb from both sides.Fish Hoek were stronger in the second half, and won the match. Player of the Match was Samantha Chambers.U14B Team won 18-6.This team was in the 2nd position on the log, with Fish Hoek in 3rd - they knew they had to win the match. In the first half, communication was excellent amongst team mates, which was reflected in the half time score: 8-6 to Wynberg. In the second half, the defence only allowed Fish Hoek to score 6 goals while the attackers secured every Wynberg centre pass. Players of the Match were Nishaat Davids and Elizabeth Ducroq.

MATCHES vs FISH HOEK: AUGUST 14

U14A Team won 9-5. The girls were determined to win, especially after the loss against JVR. They stuck to their opponents and made it a riveting game to watch. With the entire team working as a unit, Wynberg restricted Herschel but continued to score. Players of the Match were Aaliyah Haron and Kelsey Theunis. U14B Team lost 6-11.Wynberg’s almost unbeaten record made them overconfident but it just wasn't our shooters' day. All skills need to be worked on, as we made silly mistakes that cost us the match. Player of the Match was Ashleigh Rorich.U14C Team won 9-3.Wynberg made stunning interceptions throughout the game and took the lead. The standard dropped in the 2nd half, but it was a good, clean, enjoyable game. Player of the Match was Jodi Beckman.

MATCHES VS HERSCHEL: AUGUST 7

U19B Team won 19-10,In the first half, Wynberg played really well: passes were short and accurate, the attacking players fed the ball into the circle brilliantly, the shooting was accurate and the defence kept the ball away from their opponents. Kagiso Jantjies was Player of the Match.U19A Team lost 31-8.There were some beautiful interceptions and the team fought for every ball. Despite trying their hardest, Wynberg could not stop Herschel, who were playing really well. The U19A team showed great sportsmanship and kept their spirits up throughout the game.

U16A Team lost 10-13.The game was played at a tremendous pace which caused toomany errors from Wynberg. Overall our girls played well, aside from these avoidable mistakes. Communication has improved greatly and players are responding more quickly during matches. Player of the Match was Carrie Schaller. U16B Team drew 14-14. Our girls played as individuals rather than as a team which put Herschel ahead at half time. In the 2nd half, the girls buckled down and converted two of Herschel's centre passes, but, sadly, ran out of time and were unable to score just 1 more goal to take the game. Player of the Match was Lupiwe Poswa. U16C Team lost 6-7.In the second half, Wynberg let it slip, allowing Herschel to score off 2 of their centre passes, and putting them in the lead by 1 point. We played well till the end, and hope to have a better result next week. Player of the Match was Naomi Simpson.

However, Inge Tripod was named Player of the Match against Kingswood College! On Monday, 10 August, the girls played against Rhenish and were finally victorious! This victory placed them 7th overall in the tournament. The girls are extremely proud of their achievements. They are aiming to qualify for this prestigious event again next year and finishing in a higher position.

On 14 August the 1st team played Herschel for the second time this season. Isobel Evans, Kaylee Marshall and Ashlyn Southern all won their matches. Demi Steenkamp went down 2-3 after a tough battle. Wynberg won overall. The 2nd team played Rustenburg, also for the second time this season. The team consisted of Alice Weng, Brittney Blackburn, Nhadia Gustavo and Inge Tripod. The girls all fought really hard but were unable to beat Rustenburg.

enjoyed the course and there were some great results - their hard work paying off! Lauren Jonathan, Kirsten and Karen Roodman, Amy Forster, Mikayla Grey, Savannah Wiegand, Aaminah Domingo, Sarah-Jane Deary and Sasha Petersen went through to Western Province trials.

Congratulations to Lauren Jonathan who ran well at trials and was selected for the Western Province team.

On 21 August, the 2nds played Westerford in a very exciting spectacle. For matrics, Nhadia Gustavo and Alice Weng, it was their last match for the school. Brittney Blackburn started well but eventually lost her match 3-1. Alice Weng fought hard and emerged victorious, winning 3-1. Nhadia Gustavo played next and also won 3-1! The pressure was on for Inge Tripod as she needed to win her match for Wynberg to win overall. Although she fought really hard, she unfortunately lost her match 0-3. Although they lost, It was an excellent end of season match.

The 2nd team played against Herschel. Both Brittney Blackburn and Taylor Brooks had extremely tight matches - Brittney won 3-2 and Taylor lost 3-2. Nhadia Gustavo and Inge Tripod had equally exciting matches with some brilliant rallies and both won 3-0. This was a great win for Wynberg.

1st team vs Pinelands: Wynberg won 3-1.The 1st team really put their best stick forward. Pinelands scored first which galvanised Wynberg. Two goals were scored by Tamsyn Gaynor – the Player of the Match. The first from a Steph Lopes-Stuart cross which Tamsyn volleyed into the goal; the 2nd from another cross. Both goals were the result of a team effort in the build-up. The third goal was scored by Sasha Sivertsen, drag-flicking from a short corner. U16A team vs Pinelands: Wynberg won 3-0.An early goal was tapped in by Banele Plaatjies and the next 2 were scored by Amy Arendse. MATCHES 21 & 22 August: vs RUSTENBURG

MATCHES 15 August

3rd team vs Bergvliet High’s 2nd team: Wynberg won 1-0.The goal was scored from a short corner converted by Jesse Kleintjies, the Player of the Match. The girls need to work on their shots at goal as there were too many opportunities missed during this game. Defender, Emma Williams, also had a wonderful game, using the skills learned at practice.

U14A team vs Central: Wynberg lost 2-4.In the first half, Wynberg played good structured hockey, playing well as a unit. Defensive errors saw Central score 2 goals but the team fought back and had equalised by half time. Unfortunately in the second half they didn't work hard enough to gain possession and then gave it away too cheaply allowing Central to score 2 more goals. This was a frustrating result, in what should have been a much closer contest.

1st team vs Bloemhof: Wynberg lost 1-2In spite of pouring rain, wind and poor visibility, it was a good game of hockey. Wynberg scored first - Stephanie Lopes-Stuart with a back-stick shot. Bloemhof equalized shortly afterwards and the score remained level until the last five minutes when Bloemhof took the lead. Wynberg tried hard to score again but could not find the net.

U16D team vs Hershel U16D & U14C: Wynberg won 3-0. This was an unusual match as we played a longer game, interchanging between Herschel’s U16D and U14C teams. We had fun and enjoyed playing together as a team. Nkhensani Baloyi was captain.

MATCH 8 August: vs REDDAM

1st Team vs Reddam: Wynberg drew 2-2.Wynberg played an action-packed match against Reddam on their astro. The linking worked well and the team as a unit are learning where and when to release the ball. Wynberg's two goals were scored by Tasneem Rawoot and Jenna Grey. Down the other side of the field, Valeshka Harkhu made some great saves.

1st team vs Rustenburg: Wynberg lost 0-2.

After a fast and challenging first half, Wynberg was 1-0

down. They made great passes and did not give up but

despite their efforts, the end result was 2-0 to Rustenburg.

3rd team vs Rustenberg: Wynberg lost 0-8.

The girls played a hard game and showed impeccable

sportsmanship but Rustenberg showed high intensity and

fitness which our team lacked.

U16B vs Rustenburg: Wynberg drew 1-1.

The U16B girls played well against tough opponents. It was a

tight, exciting game. Kauthar Gameeldien scored the goal

for Wynberg and Kayla Arendse was Player of the Match.

U16D vs Rustenburg: Wynberg drew 1-1.

Although nervous of Rustenburg’s reputation, Wynberg

scored first. Rustenburg equalised and although there were

some very close moments in both circles, the match ended

with a draw. Caris Gertzen was captain for the match.

U16E vs Rustenburg: Wynberg lost 0-7.

The U16E girls played well in the first half, limiting a strong

Rustenburg team to only one goal. However, Rustenburg

were too strong in the second half, scoring 6 goals. Player of

the Match was Chloe Scholtz.

U14A vs Rustenburg: Wynberg drew 1-1.

The team played some excellent hockey at the start: they

put pressure on the Rustenburg defence but could not

score. A lapse in concentration and bad marking resulted in

a Rustenburg goal which demoralised the team a bit. A

positive talk at half time and hard work by all, eventually led

to a great goal being scored by Michelle Boshoff.

The U14A team beat St Benedicts from the UK 4-0.

On Friday 31 July, Wynberg’s 1st and U16A teams played hockey against Kings High School from Warwick in the UK. The 1st team played a great game and beat Kings High 6-1: 2 were scored by Chelsea Manoek, 2 by Kayla Morgan and 1 each by Sasha Sivertsen and Jamie Southgate. The whole team played really well together and are to be congratulated on their victory. On Monday 3 August, Wynberg's 1st and 2nd teams played against Denstone College, also from the UK. The 1st team won 2-1. Thank you to Gabby Makohliso from the 2nds who joined the team for the day and perform-ed well, linking up some great passes. Denstone College scored the first goal but Wynberg came back with a fighting spirit and pocketed two goals: the first goal was scored by Jenna Grey, and the second goal by Tasneem Rawoot who dived in to get a deflection shot. This was another great team effort!
