THE VICAR’S PRATTLE We are blessed in this country in ways that many people can't even fathom. We have good government, a largely free, just society. We get to choose how we live, work, play and worship; we are infinitely blessed.
Most of us are blessed in ways we don’t ever acknowledge. Most of us are so blessed that we don’t, for the most part, even give these blessings a passing thought. Most of us are blessed with a roof over our heads and a full pantry. We get to choose when, where and what we eat. Most of us have some money in the bank and largely, no fear of when our next meal is coming from. But there are some in our community for whom this is not the case.
Five weeks ago, our Monday community hub began again after Christmas. Almost all the previous services returned except Emergency Relief (ER). These organisations use our site to offer assistance and advice to those who perhaps do not enjoy some of the blessings we take for granted. Five weeks ago, two people were here waiting outside for ER to open. I had to go and tell them that ER lost its funding in 2020 and would never be opening again. The woman was very distressed. ‘What will I do?’ She asked. ‘How will I eat today? I was relying on this’. Through her tears, she just held her hands up. I will admit that I was also distressed. I did the only thing I could think of; made her some toast, gave her a coffee and sat and talked with her. She told me that the free breakfast from around the corner, (Old Church of Christ, Berrima St) closed, so no more breakfast. An idea formed.
Later that morning I spoke to Chris. ‘We’re doing this!’ I said. ‘Great!’ she said, ‘I’m in’. Without even trying, Pete’s Brekky Club was born and the very next week, without advertising or even telling anyone really, we fed 7 people, week after 10, week after 11, and last week being a public holiday, only 1, but that one was so important.
During our impromptu meeting/discussion, we tossed around the idea of a Street Pantry to compliment the brekky club, similar to what St Paul’s Manly have done. Ours would be inside the hall though, not outside, for various practical reasons. ‘But, how would we store and distribute the food?’ Answer, in the cubby cube shelving from the office maybe. ‘How would we then store the office things?’ Answer, we’d need new cupboards, and I know just who to ask.’ I said, ‘and we could possibly get them for much cheaper than new’, I said. Long story short, free is the best price ever. Dexion Hendra want to share their blessings with our community and help the pantry get off the ground, so they donated the two cupboards we needed. Thank you Dexion. Next, ‘how can we stock and maintain this pantry without any money or food?’ Answer! We ask you; the parish and see how we go.
The idea of the pantry is to ‘bring what you can’, or ‘take what you need’; simple! Of course, right now, the pantry is empty. We need everything, especially small individual serves that don’t need cutlery or utensils to eat or open for the homeless. We also need slightly larger, family type food, for couples and families struggling. Are you willing to add a little extra to your shop each week and then donate it to us. We will generate a ‘preferred foods list’ in the next week or so to help you. In the meantime, each week, we’ll have a food of the week. This week’s foods are: long life milk, small ring-pull baked beans, spaghetti, or individual soups and bowl noodles. Next week is: pasta and pasta sauce.
Can you share your blessings and the love of Christ with those you may never meet or know, through a meal or helping out at brekky club?
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Mtt 5:3)

2020 Lenten Study: The parish will be studying “Lament and Hope” Create in in me a Clean Heart and is a journey through the Psalms. Cost $12 each. Please place your name on the list on the information table. Study details to follow.
Our first Contemplative Service & Shared Meal will be held on Sunday 16th February from 6pm and followed by a bring and share meal in the Parish Centre. More information to follow, but in the meantime please read the Vicar’s AGM Report on page 11.
Street Pantry Please read the Vicar’s Prattle on page 3. Each Sunday please bring your Street Pantry gifts to worship and place in the cart to be blessed during the service. Each week, we’ll feature a food of the week. This week’s foods are: long life milk, small ring-pull baked beans, spaghetti, or individual soups and bowl noodles. Next week is: pasta and pasta sauce. Chris has given us a lot of ideas and we will be featuring these during the year. Church Dusting: Thank you all who have put their hands up to be part of the Church Dusting Roster. We are requiring a few more people to assist those who are working alone and a couple of people to help out when people are unwell or on leave. This duty is usually Friday or Saturday and takes about an hour every two months. Please leave your name in the letterbox on the information table in the church foyer.
Envirobank Bottle & Lids for Kids Collection day is Friday 28th February. Marilyne organised for our first delivery to the area co-ordinator for Lids for Kids. As with our first Envirobank collection, there is a procedure we need to follow. To assist us with our collection, we have been given a list of compatible lids that will assist us.
