Commodity Definitions and Information
Inquiries and Information
Prior to delivering recyclables to a center, the center should be contacted to determine current hours, location, accepted materials, or packaging requirements. Each recycling center may adjust in response to market conditions.
Recyclables' Value
Since the value of many recyclables and the cost of handling and transportation to end-markets are substantial, most centers do not pay money for items such as glass or plastic. Some centers pay for aluminum and ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Centers should be contacted to determine if any money is paid for accepted materials.
Preparation and Packaging of Recyclables
Material must be separated and should be deposited in appropriate containers. Each center has specific preparation and packaging requirements which are based on quality control requirements established by the purchaser of the recyclables and by quality standards for end products. Although general guidelines are listed, the individual center should be contacted regarding preparations and packaging.
Telephone Books: Many places no longer accept phone books for recycling. The best way to reduce phonebook waste is opt out for any or all deliveries at http://wwwyellowpagesoptout.com. This link provides a short video on the issues surrounding phone books and their recycling and why choosing to not receive them is beneficial. https://youtu.be/tD_LaXcmfk8.
Rechargeable Batteries and Cell Phones: Due to the numerous locations available to recycle rechargeable batteries and cell phones, they are not listed individually in this Directory. Go to http://locations.call2recycle.org/wy/ to find the closest store for battery and cell phone recycling.
Electronic-waste (e-waste): Some facilities charge a fee for disposal and some do not. Patrons should contact the center regarding preparation details and costs in advance of disposal.
Vehicle batteries: Stores which sell batteries are required by law to accept one battery for each one purchased. Some stores will accept additional batteries, and some battery dealers will pay a small amount for batteries. Batteries are commonly accepted at landfills, please call your local landfill to verify.
Used motor oil: Used oil may be accepted by some service stations and occasionally for a fee since the station may be charged for used oil collection. Some municipal maintenance operations also accept used motor oil and may also charge a fee depending on the quantity disposed.
Used motor oil must not be mixed with other vehicle fluids. Used motor oil should not be deposited after hours at any location.
Newspapers: Some centers require that newspapers be bagged or tied with string.
Office paper and office pack: Paper clips should also be removed. Glossy and glue bound publications should not be included with office paper or newspapers. Envelopes and "junk mail" should not be included unless specified. Self-adhesive labels (labels which are not water soluble) should be removed from office paper and office pack. Materials which are acceptable for office pack vary from center to center. Check with local recyclers to determine which paper products they will accept and how materials should be separated and packaged.
Corrugated cardboard: Cardboard must be corrugated, clean, and free of debris. Corrugated cardboard
contains “waves” between the two outside layers.
7
Pasteboard/Pressboard: The few centers which accept pasteboard require that it be clean and free of food and other debris. Examples include: cereal boxes, 12/24 can pop boxes, 6-pack cases, etc.
Glass: Glass beverage and food containers should be rinsed and clean of food or other material. Labels are acceptable. Window glass, mirrors, and drinking glasses cannot be accepted. Metal and plastic lids and metal rings must be removed. Most centers require separation of glass by color.
»»NOTE: Many centers cannot accept green or blue glass.««
Aluminum: Aluminum cans should be free of debris and liquid. At most centers, scrap aluminum should be separated from aluminum cans. Scrap aluminum such as aluminum doors and aluminum lawn chairs are accepted by most scrap metal recyclers. Yard Waste: Leaves, grass clippings, branches and other natural yard wastes are accepted at many facilities. Some communities also offer curbside pickup. Please call local facilities for more information.
Plastics: Plastics must be clean, dry, and only certain types are accepted at many facilities. Some centers accept only natural (clear or white) plastics and cannot accept colored plastic containers. Some centers also have limitations about accepting plastic containers which may have been used for motor oil or vegetable oil.
The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) has developed this voluntary plastic container coding system that must be referenced prior to taking plastics to a recycling center:

Recycling Tips and Ideas
«« Using your own coffee mug drastically cuts down on waste and some shops will even give a discount. »»
«« Thrift stores are a great way to get rid of unwanted household goods without throwing them away. These stores accept furniture, clothing, shoes, jewelry, dishes, appliances, fabrics, toys, games, books, outdoor and exercise equipment, and more. Call your local stores to verify what they will accept. »»
«« Recycling in Wyoming can be economically challenging due to distances to markets and the volumes we generate. Contribute to recycling in your community. »»
«« Cut down on household hazardous waste. Contact DEQ or your local landfill for suggestions about how to reduce household hazardous waste. Use all of the product in the way it was intended, and then you will have only an empty container to discard. »»
«« Encourage your neighbors and friends to recycle, recycle, reuse, and use wisely. You may notice a difference. »»
«« Your local library, thrift store, or used book store may accept paper and/or plastic grocery bags. »»
«« All food and debris should be removed from metal, plastic, and glass containers before depositing at the recycling center. »»
«« Wire hangers may be reused by your local dry cleaner or a thrift shop. »» «« Many communities have local groups which volunteer their time to operate local recycling centers.
Wyoming has many public interest organizations with activities related to environmental affairs. Become active with recycling efforts in your local community. »»
«« Liquids cannot be accepted by municipal solid waste landfills. Never throw away any container
which still has liquid contents. »»
«« "Office pack" - Each center may have different criteria about what can be included with office pack.
Check with local recyclers to determine which products are accepted and how materials should be separated and packaged. »»
«« Save Styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap in a garbage bag. Then when you need some, you have a
choice. Several copy shops and office supply stores in the state accept clean Styrofoam or other packing materials. Call them to see which items are acceptable for their needs. »»
«« Purchase products made of recycled materials. Without a demand for recycled products, materials
cannot be reused. »» «« When traveling, keep your recyclables until you can find recycling centers for them. When staying
at motels or campgrounds, ask where you can recycle newspapers, glass, or aluminum beverage containers. »»
«« Used motor oil should never be discarded on the driveway, in the yard, in the street, or down a
drain. Improper disposal can damage our water supply. Some landfills and other municipal facilities accept used motor oil for no charge or a small fee to recover their cost for proper disposal. »»
«« Encourage your local community government to sponsor a household hazardous waste day to
properly dispose of household chemicals which can no longer be used. Household hazardous waste collection days are not cheap nor easy. They require substantial investments of time and money. »»
«« Reuse materials whenever possible. Find ways to extend the lives of furniture and appliances. »»
«« Give your extra rubber bands to schools or the local newspaper for reuse »» «« Donate magazines and newspapers to a doctor or dentist's office. Convalescent centers, retirement
homes, schools, and churches can also use them for reading or for craft projects. Encourage the
47
"second" user to recycle. »» «« Purchase food and other items in containers which can be recycled and which have recycled
content. »» «« Prepare your own lunch when you leave home instead of buying fast food which often has excess
packaging. »» «« Stores which sell vehicle batteries are required by law to accept one battery for each one purchased. »» «« Buy products in packaging that can be recycled. Materials which cannot be recycled in your community go
to the landfill and cannot be reused. »»
«« Used oil cannot contain solvents or antifreeze. Check with your local community contacts about how to dispose or recycle antifreeze, solvents, paint thinner, and paint stripper. »»
«« Find ways to recycle at work. Some businesses generate large volumes of waste for which
recycling options may be available. »» «« Purchase recycled products and to create incentives for recycled products to be purchased.
Complete the cycle of recycling. »» «« If you work in an office, use both sides of paper. You can print draft reports or make copies on one
side of paper that has been used on the other side. Some businesses must limit their use of “used paper” since it may carry sensitive information. »»
