  • X-Men Legends PlayStation 2 Release Date: September 21, 2004 Also Known As: X-Men RPG Also on: NNG, GCN, Xbox Genre: Third-Person Action RPG Publisher: Activision Developer: Raven Software

Introduction Are you new to the X-Mansion? Are you tired of being picked on by the bigger mutants?

Well never fear! This guide has everything you need to establish yourself as leader of the X-Men. We start you off with basic combat and provide detailed descriptions of every mission, all of the items, and the many attributes of your favorite mutants.

Don't let Magneto and his cronies have their way with the defenseless humans. Look no further for:

Combat Tips: Simple combat, Xtreme Combos, and every character profiled.

Walkthrough: From Morlocks to Acolytes. We take you through the whole adventure.

Danger Room: We walk you through all of the missions and locate danger room discs, comic books, and sketch pads.

  • Basics Legends is a fairly straightforward dungeon crawler. This means that you will face room after room of similar enemies, destructible environments, and an array of playable characters. Useful items appear when enemies are killed and the environment is destroyed. The three most important items are health packs (red blobs), energy packs (blue blobs), and money or tech bits which are shaped like diamonds. Health and energy packs restore 25% of their respective bar while tech bits are used to purchase items and revive characters at Xtraction points. Saving Speaking of Xtraction points, these are the large blue X's scattered throughout the game where players can save, visit the danger room, change team members, or buy items. Once a mission is complete it cannot be revisited, so when searching for secret items like danger room disks or comic books, do a thorough pass your first time through

Combat There are a number of ways to slaughter the enemies in Legends. First off there is a primary attack or punch, a secondary attack, and a grapple button. When grappling with an enemy, the directional pad is used to throw them in a certain direction. Thrown enemies will be dealt damage when they either his something in the environment or bounce into other enemies. The grapple button can also be used to pick up items and toss them at evil doers.

Basic Attacks: Knock-back: Secondary attack, Secondary attack Knock-up: Primary attack, Primary attack, Secondary attack Trip: Primary attack, Secondary attack, Primary attack Stun: Secondary attack, Primary attack, Secondary attack, Secondary attack

Mutant powers are special attacks that are gained as characters level up. They also drain the energy bar with each use, so keep an eye out for how much each attack costs. About midway through the adventure the X-Men will gain the ability to perform Xtreme attacks. These are performed in the same manner as mutant abilities but are only available when the glowing X's at the bottom of the screen are lit up. Xtreme attack pieces are found in the environment just like money or health.

Combo! A very powerful technique in legends is the ability to perform combination attacks with team mates. There are three ways to accomplish this. The first is to throw an enemy into a team mate. This will result in a "batter-up" combo. Another way is for two mutants to perform their mutant powers on the same enemy at the same time, this will result in a combination of the specific powers. When playing one player, the AI can be forced to use a mutant power by tapping the "call team" button. The third way is to perform an Xtreme Attack at the same time another mutant is using their power. This is called an Xtreme combo. Combos not only multiply the amount of damage done to an opponent, they also vastly increase the amount of experience collected. Be sure to practice combos early and often.

Teamwork Choosing the right team in X-men has a huge impact on how difficult each mission will be. The most important thing to remember is that different enemies will have resistances to certain types of attacks. This resistance is listed with the enemy's name when an X-Man attacks them. There are physically resistant, mental resistant and energy resistant baddies. When groups of enemies attack the team, deciding which character to use will change the course of the battle. For example, Cyclops' optic beam is fairly useless against an energy resistant soldier.

  • Many bosses have multiple resistances, so constantly changing which character is attacking is necessary win the fight. By the end of the game there are 15 X-Men to choose from, not counting Professor Xavier who is only playable in a few missions. This means that there is a huge number of team combinations for players to choose from. But which combination is the best? While each X-Man has unique qualities there are some mutants that are extremely powerful.

In terms of mutant abilities, Iceman's freeze attack gives him the edge over almost every character in the game. At high levels, it not only inflicts damage, but it freezes enemies in their tracks, and causes them to move slowly afterward. Storm and Cyclops also have an ability called "leadership" which multiplies the amount of experience and damage done to enemies while performing a combo. If both of these mutants are on a team, this multiplier is multiplied. That makes for some huge combo attacks.

For brawlers the obvious choice is Wolverine. Although he is not drastically different from the other melee fighters, his healing abilities and his speed make him the ultimate go-to guy in a tough battle.

Jean Grey is a must for any Missions that require mental powers. She dominates the Astral plane with her psychic scream, especially when equipped with the astral stone.

While other characters can be substituted for certain positions (Colossus or Rogue is about equal to Wolverine) the best teams in the game will most likely be made from these characters:

Wolverine Storm Cyclops Iceman Jean Grey

  • Items Items are found throughout the game. They appear after taking down an enemy or destroying parts of the environment. Items are also random, so don't expect to find the same one twice in a certain area. While basic equipment is common in the early stages of the game, rare and special items have to be won in special danger room sessions or purchased from Forge or the Healer. Be sure to sell back extra items and swap out old ones as the game progresses.

  • Xavier Protocol (Characters and Experience)

The following character sections have stats on each characters abilities and powers. The key to X-Men Legends is to focus on specific powers as opposed to spreading out experience points. Unused characters gain experience along with the current team, however they will be on the low end of the team experience scale. While experimenting with different teams X-Men is fun, it pays off to select permanent team members early in the game and stick with them.

  • Walkthrough Rescue Allison The story begins as you take control of Wolverine in a devastated downtown Manhattan. There will immediately be a couple of anti-mutant troops to come rough you up. Use these chumps to practice your basic and combo attacks. The Levels of X-men legends are fairly linear, so if you don't know what to do, just keep moving forward. The first game tips appear in succession just at the beginning of the level. The first game tip (rotating yellow question mark) is a reminder that the world map can be accessed by clicking the right analogue stick. Press it again to move the map into the center of the screen. Pressing START also accesses the game menu where you can load a game, check the mission objectives, access the players menu, change game options, or call it a day.

The second game tip points out that many of the objects in the game can be picked up and destroyed. Objects like the trashcans next to the game tip will fly to pieces with a few swipes of Wolverine's claws or they can be picked up by using the grapple button. Once lifted, objects can be thrown at enemies using the grapple button or the basic attack button to inflict some heavy damage. At the get-go, some objects are too heavy to be lifted by the X-Men who have low levels of the might ability.

Take out the troops and make sure to bash objects on your way. Destroying the environment can reveal useful items and alternate routes. Also, avoid environmental hazards such as fire and lave, it will inflict small amounts of damage. Cross the road, and head down into the subway.

In the subway, practice using the grapple attack to throw enemies into the lava or parts of the environments. Notice that you must press the direction you want to throw the enemy while you press the grapple button. Taking out pieces of the subway and trashcans will also reveal health and energy packs. Do not be shy about using either of these items, they are abundant in the early levels. You also may have picked up items or equipment at this point. There are three types of equipment: Armor, belts, and backpacks. Go to the character menu to equip any items. Head up the stair in the subway to emerge back on the street.

  • Walk up the ramp to the right of the staircase, take out the troop and there will be another game tip reminding you about throwing objects. Continue up the ramp to find a game tip about jumping. Jumping can be used in conjunction with attacks and combos. See the combat section of the guide for more info on this. Jump off the ledge next to the tip, pick up the health pack and read the next tip about using health and energy packs. It is important to note that once other X-Men join the team it can be set when they use health in the character state menu.

Walk down the top of the bus onto the street and take out some more troops. Before following The Blob's footsteps, walk around the lava pit and head up some steps to find an area with an extra health and energy pack. Then walk in the direction of the footsteps and the next are a will load.

In the next area the street becomes blocked so you head back underground. In the subway there is a game tip about grappling. Wolverine will most likely level up in this area. Head to the character selection screen to dole out the experience points earned for this accomplishment. See the Basics and Experience Section of the guide for more info on this. Head back up to the street level and take out some more anti-mutant troops. At the entrance to the smashed glass building there is a game tip describing some simple attack combo's. See the combat section of the guide for a detailed combat tutorial. Once again, follow The Blob's footprints through the building, face a crew of troops and continue into central park.

In the park Wolverine is greeted by Cyclops who is revealed to be Mystique in disguise. She socks Wolverine in the jaw and unleashes her thugs on him. Give these guys a good old fashioned ring-a-ding-ding and head down the steps into the park to find a game tip on using mutant powers. Mutant powers use mutant energy (of course) and can be levelled up with other character stats. See the combat section for more information on this area. As you traverse the park remember to smash benches, lamp posts, and garbage cans for useful items.

  • Pyro will make an appearance and block your path with flames. Continue under an archway and then head up the stairs to your right while collecting a health and energy pack. Continue on to a sewer entrance in front of which there is a game tip that instructs you to destroy objects that block progression. Attack the sewer bars, to open the path ahead.

Head through the sewer and read the game tip on using the environments to open up paths. In other words, hit the fire hydrant to put out the blaze. Just past this area is the first X-Jet Xtraction point. Here you can save and load games and switch out characters once more join your team.

Ahead you will run into Mystique again, except this time you will have to take her out. She begins the battle with a machine gun attack that can be jumped over. Use combos and the mutant power slash to take her health off. Mystique will then summon three brotherhood goons. Its best to take out the lesser enemies before focusing on her. After another round of beatings, Mystique will transform into Wolverine. Her attack patterns basically remain the same, she will fire her guns and occasionally hit back. Combo her shape shifting behind into the ground and she will eventually give up. When you enter into a conversation with Mystique select "It's time to save Alison" to advance the story or select the other topics to continue the conversation. You receive 30 experience points for defeating Mystique and now must move on to east Manhattan to find blob.

Head through the tunnel to meet up with Cyclops who will join your team. Characters can be changed at any time in game through the use of the directional pad. You an also set the character's attack strategy and how often they use health packs through the character menu. If you decide to take control of Cyclops, be aware that he is not nearly as tough as Wolverine, so watch his health. You can order team mates who are controlled by the computer to stay close during battle or to attack specific targets during combat. That attack they use is set in the character selection menu.

  • Continue following the footsteps until you run into the Blob and Allison in a parking lot. The Blob has a few dangerous attacks to look out for. His ground smash is the most annoying, so when he winds up, make sure to jump in the air to avoid being thrown by this move. He also has a running dive and some very slow punches. This enemy cannot be harmed by physical attacks, so switch to Cyclops and use the beam attack repeatedly. Fire the beam when wolverine is attacking to perform the Adamantine Beam combo attack. The Blob will also pick up items in the lot and throw them, the most dangerous projectile is the car, which will explode upon impact and can take of some large chunks of health. Once his health has been depleted, Jean Grey appears and instructs the two mutants to take Allison to the airlift. After the battle be sure to destroy the left over items in the environment and collect the experience and items.

The next area has an Xtraction point, so remember to save your progress so far. More brotherhood thugs will attack your party on the roof. As you traverse the rooftop and enter the warehouse, be sure to pick up the comic book in the center of the room. It will become available for viewing from the main menu. Continue up the stairs and back onto the roof, there is now a new type of enemy called a brotherhood insurgent. These enemies have a ranged laser attack, so don't be caught off guard. On the rooftop after the warehouse there is a platform under the marvel sign with a health pack and power pack. Continue to the north rooftops.

Two thugs will attack in the next area, walk down the stairs and loop under the stairs to find a health pack. Continue up the ramp of wooden planks to the next rooftop. From here the direct path is up the stairs where you will find the danger room disc "teamwork". You can also head to the left and around the side of the stair to face some extra enemies and pick up health and power packs. Run up the steps and board the X Jet to end the mission.

  • X-Mansion Welcome to Professor Xavier's Institute for higher learning. You are introduced to the professor in his study and have the opportunity to converse with him and other characters to learn a bit about the back-story. You can choose to take tours of the mansion and basement to get a feel for the home base of the X-Men.

In the subbasement you have the option to speak to forge over the computer. At the beginning of the next mission he becomes available at extraction points as a shopkeeper type character who you can buy equipment from with tech bits. Enter the Danger Room to find the disk "teamwork 102". Enter other areas such as the brig and the medical facility to learn about the home base of the X-men. Use the elevator by the Xtraction point in the basement to travel back upstairs. On the mini map objectives are marked by the different colored X's.

Dormitories Upstairs in the dormitories you can play mutant trivia in the living room for experience points. There is also a place to view collected concept art in the room next door. In the opposite living room you can view load screens, and In the center of the floor there is a stairway to the ground floor.

In the library of the ground floor you can review collected comic art. And in the adjacent room there is a computer for reviewing X-Men bios. On the other side of the bottom floor there is a television to watch unlocked cinematics. After you are through exploring the mansion, head to the war room to call a briefing of the X-Men and start the next mission. Before the mission starts you will be able to choose which four X-Men will join the team. At the moment you can choose from:

Wolverine Cyclops Ice Man Jean Grey Rogue Storm

  • Harp Facility Recommended Character: Ice Man The X-Men begin at the snowy exterior of the Harp base. Head down the path in front of the X-Jet to do battle with some Harp guards. They are the main enemy of this area and can be formidable when in large groups. Just around the bend there is a chasm with a blue question mark next to a path that is blocked by fire. Use ice man's mutant power in either of these areas to put out the fire, or form a bridge over the gap.

The goal of these outdoor areas is to destroy the 5 transformers. These are marked on your mini-map with X symbols, so simply follow the markers. Two of the transformers are in this first area and the game will not let you advance through the door until they are destroyed.

Pass through the door and onto the second outdoor area where there are three more transformers. After the last one has been destroyed, your objectives will be updated. Follow the blue marker on your mini-map to the extraction point in front of the snow Cat.

Walk down the road in front of the Xtraction point an over the bridge. Here you will face a number of Harp guards and a tank. The tank may look menacing but one or two mutant power attacks will take it out for good. Hopping up onto the tank and attacking the gun turret will inflict the most damage. Once these enemies are defeated head inside the door.

You now enter the Harp inner zone. Once again you must destroy six transformers in order to progress to the next area. These are marked on the map as X's. After entering the area, take a left up the snow bank where you can out the fire that blocks the path with Ice man's frost breath. Ahead there is a transformer and a bridge that gets taken out by an explosion.

  • A flying character such as storm is able to get on top of the derailed train in this section and follow it to the top of a building in order to find the danger room disc "combined powers 101". Since the main bridge was taken out by an explosion, walk to the left of it to find a make-shift bridge. Notice the train car sitting on the bridge over the icy gorge in this section? Use a flying character to jump on top of this car to find an extra skill point. Return to the area across the bridge to find another large door, a group of troopers, and 2 more transformers. After destroying the two transformers, continue through the door to the inner grounds.

Directly next to the entrance to the inner area there is an extraction point. There is a group of guards straight down the road, destroy them and head up the snowbank to get the transformer to your left if the extraction point is behind you. Continue the climb to find the 5th transformer nestled among trees above the road. Backtrack down to the road and follow it towards the next marker on the map. You will notice a building with guards on top of it firing downwards at you. Get on top of this building to take out the guards, and find the danger room disk "beast".

Second Tank Battle The road path is blocked by a snow cat, so walk in between the two buildings and you will be confronted by more guards. Use Ice Man's freeze to clear the fire that block the path behind the second building. This is the location of the last transformer. When that is destroyed a scene will play showing a tank exit the building with troops lighting fires in front of it. First, put out the two fires using Ice Man's Freeze attack. Then, take a strong melee fighter like Wolverine or Rogue, jump onto the tank and use powerful attacks on its turret. One hit from the tank's main gun can be enough to take out the weaker characters so keep them out of harm's way. Once the turret is destroyed, take out the surrounding guards and enter the facility.

Once inside, destroy the objects inside for tech parts and health packs. Head up the stairs and you will be stopped by a wall of lasers. Enter the door to your right. The best part about his area is that everything is

  • destructible. Bash through the wall of this room to go around the lasers. You can disable the lasers from the control panel next to them. Here you will face a Harp guard that glows blue and like Blob cannot be hurt with physical attacks. He also shoots flash grenades that will turn the screen white for a second. Use mutant power attacks like Storm's lightening to take him out.

The door directly ahead of the laser wall requires a key card, so head through the door marked "007" to go get it. This area contains more guards, one of which is another flash bomb thrower. Take him out and grab his key card. Return to the door marked 0-51 to enter the mess hall.

Mess Hall Entering the mess hall, you will be confronted with a huge crowd of soldiers. Take them out and explore the smaller rooms to the left of the hall. In the first room, look behind some boxes to find the danger room disk "Combined Powers 102". Continue on to the area marked A21. Take out these guards and bash through the wall to go around the laser field. Continue on to the door that leads to systems operations.

Systems Operations contains computer panels and Harp guards. Smash everything and kill them all. This area is straightforward without diverging paths. Continue on to the Satellite Control Center. After being attacked by three guards, there is an Xtraction point where you can save your game and switch-up characters.

Satellite Control Center After the Xtraction point you will pass through a room of guards. The following room contains a Lab tech who turns out to be Mystique, once again in disguise. She unleashes Pyro, who is resistant to energy attacks.

Pyro This mini-boss is best taken out with a physical character like Wolverine. Lay into him with Wolverine's Brutal

  • Slash and you can take him out before even worrying about the fire demons he unleashes. Look out for the fire birds that shoot from his hands, they explode where they land. If you run low on health or energy there are plenty of breakable items in the far corner of the room that contain health. Don't bother trying to put out the fire from which Pyro emerged, its permanent.

In the next area you face a new type of enemy called Harp Marauders. They are energy resistant and have a large area attack that will quickly deplete the health of characters with a low defense. Pass through two halls and enter a room with an elevator and several Marauders. After taking them out, check around the side of the staircase to find a new comic edition. Collect the book and head down the elevator to the tunnels.

This area is difficult because it pits you against combinations of Marauders and Revolutionaries. You will have to switch between physical and energy attacks in order to stay alive as you face large groups of these characters. Move ahead to the chasm, which can be crossed by using ice man's freeze.

Once over this bridge you will face more enemies once then at any previous point in the game. The key here is to hang back and make sure that your characters are all levelled up. As it states in the experience section of the guide, focusing on specific powers is more helpful than spreading out experience. A powerful optic beam from Cyclops is especially effective on the Marauders. Continue around the bend to another elevator, to the left of the elevator is the danger room disk "Qualifying Exam 100".

Exterior Access Tunnels At the base of the elevator you will face more combinations of energy and physical resistant soldiers. Take them out and you will find another bridge that must be completed with Ice Man's freeze. Before crossing the bridge head to your right to find some new artwork.

  • Over the bridge you will go against one more group of enemies before finally reaching an Xtraction point. Make sure to save your game here, remember the last Xtraction point was before the battle against Pyro. Head into the elevator and get ready for the battle against Toad.

This fight takes place on a platform that contains four jets that toad will try to escape in. When he boards a jet, an indicator will flash on the screen that you must destroy the vehicle before he can take off. A strong mutant attack is enough to make these jets useless. Toad has multiple resistances, so it is best to alternate which type of attack is used on him. His most dangerous offensive technique is the tongue lash, which whips 360 degrees around him and has a rather large range. When he is about to perform this attack the game switches to slow motion and you have a small opportunity to get out of the way. Pay little attention to the Harp soldiers that surround Toad unless you need to kill them for items.
