X-Ray Protective Apron Care9 Do’s & Don’ts
#1 - Do Inspect & Check Apron
Inspect and check apron for:● Defects● Cracks● Creases● Lumps● Perforations
#2 - Do Clean Apron RegularlyTo prevent damage to apron:● Only use a soft bristle brush & mild detergent● Never use bleach● Never soak or submerge in water● Never autoclave, machine launder or dry-
clean● Hang apron to air dry
#3 - Do Properly Store ApronsFollow apron manufacturer’s recommendations● Store aprons on hangers when not in-use● Avoid storing aprons on a flat surface● Aprons should be hung by the shoulder● Never fold or crease aprons● Always store with fasteners secured
#4 - Do Properly Dispose of Apron Lead Aprons are not conventional garbage● If possible, recycle lead aprons ● Contact a recycling company or local landfill● If recycling is not possible, lead aprons must
be disposed of as a hazardous waste● Contact a hazardous waste hauler
#6 - Don’t Wear Apron While SittingCracks in the lead lining can develop ● Avoid sitting while wearing apron ● Do not sit on the apron● Unless aprons are designed for seated
procedures (e.g. Urology Apron)
#6 - Don’t Expose To Extreme TempsTo prevent damage to the apron: ● Avoid exposing apron to the extreme cold● Avoid exposing apron to the extreme heat● Avoid exposing apron to direct sunlight
#7 - Don’t Lean Against Sharp EdgesTo prevent puncturing the lead lining: ● Avoid storing pointed objects in the pockets● Do not lean up against equipment ● Do not lean on pointed objects or sharp edges
#8 - Don’t Store Aprons Over ChairsTo prevent creases from forming:● Avoid laying aprons over chair backs● Avoid placing aprons on equipment● Avoid exposing apron to direct sunlight
#9 - Don’t Fold ApronsTo prevent damage to the lead lining:● Do not fold apron ● Do not wad apron● Avoid creasing the apron
Ensure Reliable Apron PerformanceTo ensure safe and reliable apron performance:● Inspect apron upon receipt● Follow apron inspection interval guidelines● Store aprons properly when not in use● Depending on wear and tear, most aprons
should be evaluated for replacement every 18-24 months
