President's Message

For the past .few months I have beenasking for volunteers for nextyear's Executive Committee. Well,we finally have a slate to presentto the membership, (see next page).Let me review the Bylaws at thistime concerning the elections, soeveryone is aware of the procedure.

First, the Nominating Committee,consisting of the present Presidentand the three most recent, livingpast Presidents, announces itsrecommended slate to the membershipat the August meeting. At thistime, nominations from the floorare open, and remain so until theend of the September meeting. Thisis important because it givesanyone the opportunity to nominatea candidate to challenge anyposition. It is your last chanceto volunteer for office. Remember,the "official slate" is only therecommendation of the NominatingCommittee.

Elections are held, by secretballot, at the October meeting.Last year's amendments to theBylaws now provide for absenteeballoting, so that any member cancast a vote whether or not theyattend the October meeting. Thecandidate receiving the most votesis then elected to office.

If you have been putting offvolunteering, you still have achance to help the Club. Don't bebashful11 Have a friend nominate

you. Some political competition isgood for the Club - it keeps us allon our toes.

Although I've been talking aboutnext year's officers, don't thinkthat this year is over! We stillhave a lot of great events comingup. One that needs special mentionis our Charity Autocross to benefitSt. Christopher's Hospital forChildren. This is replacing ourCar Raffle of the past two years,so we need lots of help financiallyand physically to make thisworthwhile. It will be an "open"event - in other words, any type ofcar can rim. We are advertising itat many locations and at the SCCAevents, and are planning on tryingto run over 100 cars, so we willneed a lot of help on the day ofthe event. All proceeds will go toSt. Chris's. Bridgestone will bedonating a complete set of tires tobe raffled off to anyone who hasmade a $15 donation, whether theyrun or not! Also, competitors areencouraged to get "sponsorship"(like you get for a walkathon, etc).Make sure you keep your calendaropen for September 23 and help usmake this an outstanding success.Call the Carle's to volunteer to

help or for any information. Weare going to need lots of peoplebehind the scenes to pull this off.Don't be shy. Remember 1990 - TheYear of Involvement.

We would like to put on a show of 356s for the August meeting atHolbert's, on Wednesday, the 29th, to help some of the newer members get abetter feel for the history of Porsche. I will take any and all, from rats to100 point. This is not a concours, it is intended as an informal show, so themore and varied display we put on, the better the meeting will be. Exec Committee Minutes

The July meeting was held at thehome of Jim and Jan Hartman. In

attendance were Bob Lamb, Paul andSybil Margaritis, Betsi Leidy, JimHartman, Janet and Jerry Weger,Vern Lyle, John Williamson, BillO'Connell, Bill and Debbie Cooper.

Acting as President in Bob Russo'sabsence was Past and Vice President

Bill O'Connell.

Our membership stands at 806. PCAdealer boards have been assigned.We will buy 10 plastic pamphletholders at $5 each to place in shopsand service centers. Statistics

from national indicate that we are

now the 8th largest region.

It was requested that in additionto the usual food and drink at the

Picnic, we provide more salads andwine for our non-beer-drinking (canyou imagine?) members, read Betsi.Free hats and such will be providedby Strohs. The Bake-Off trophieswill be from the Goody Store. Firstplace will be an apron, 2nd and 3rdwill receive a book. Joe Long willbe the head judge, Vicki O'Connellanother, and the remaining need tobe recruited - its a tough job, butsomebody, etc... We will havechocolate and non-chocolate

categories. Paul and Sybil willget charcoal, Russo will bring thebaseball equipment and Jim Hartmanneeds to get balls. (Ed. note:that's word for word, folks). DERGASSER for July has published thatthe Picnic is free. We should note

whether this helps participation.The $5 Concours fee has been waived,but since a show of hands for

participation was not taken at themeeting, we don't know how manyplan to enter. There will be atrophy for Overall winner and onefor People's Choice. Deb and Billwill get these, to be presented atthe Picnic. We may get a perpetualtrophy later. Bill Cooper belongs

to a club which is a possiblealternate Picnic site for '91.

Food would cost $16 per person notincluding beer, but the facility isfree and open until late September.

The Audubon is very excited abouthaving us for Oktoberfest and isproviding a Viennese chef. The costper person, including beer, will beabout $20, for which we will havethe following (selected by theExec): weiner schnitzel, 2 wursts,sauerbraten, purple cabbage, Germanpotato salad and dessert.

Sign-up for the Glen stands at 143.Our gross is $15,000 and costs are$9,000 resulting in a profit thatallows us to provide a free dinnerand a more elaborate menu for the

first 123 participants that signup. All who work Tech will beassured a ticket. Final profitafter the dinner, about $3,500.

Jim Hartman is now the official head

of all Car Club activity for theVintage Grand Prix. The race hasspawned an autofest with othermarques becoming active. Twofields will be set aside for car

display, one for Club cars, one fornon-Club cars. Our membership willreceive a separate mailing aboutthis event. Profits are to benefit

Fairmount Park.

The $15,000 balance in our treasuryprompted more discussion on how tospend the dollars. Since we knowof only one helmet donation so far,the purchase of new loaner helmetswas again discussed, but nodecision was reached.

Jerry Weger suggested we buy a PCfor the DER GASSER editor which

would pass on to each succeedingeditor. Bill O'Connell said hecould get the hardware at a greatprice. This idea met with favorfrom all, but it was determinedthat we all think about the entireissue for next months meeting.

get their articles in on time.

The Goody Store Proprietress, Sybil(Cyborg to close friends) hasordered fire extinguishers, 10 stopwatches, and more brakes. She alsomust get more t-shirts. JimHartman has an "in" with SK Tools

and will investigate prices.

No more Tech Sessions are scheduled,but the committee suggested that wehave one prior to Mid-Ohio schooland one for winterizing. YBHvolunteered their shop for fall;Rosemont says we can use the shopanytime.

If you wondered, like I did, whathappened to the Day at the MapleGrove Drags with the Corvette Club,it apparently was a change ofdate. It was moved earlier than

the published August 18 date, and Ididn't know about that til after

the July issue was in your hands.Next year maybe.

Some people actually voiced anobjection to the picture of "BartSimpson's" car on the cover of lastissue. Well, I was going to use ashot of someone's 944 cruising downSummit's front straight, but itlooked like it was standing still,so I chose another form of humor

instead. Don't have a cow, man!

As we said, the PAX Index will beused to determine the winner at our

Charity Event on September 23. Sojust how does that work? Supposeyou run a 61.805 in the first groupin your 924S and have the fastesttime of any C Stock car. Your rawtime multiplied by your index of.837 gives you an indexed time of51.730. If you know who the realfast people are who usually wintheir class, you can keep track ofwhere you stand throughout theday. If Tom Disque in A Preparedis going to beat your indexed time,you can figure out what he has torun. Since his car is supposed tobe faster than yours, his index isa whopping .932. Simply divideyour indexed time by his classindex and you have the raw time heneeds to tie you, 55.505. He hasto better that to beat you. Watchthe rounding off, sometimes it getsthat close! For your info, here

are the regular SCCA autocrosserswho normally run very close to thetop in the index rankings. In SS,Dave Walter in a red Corvette; inAS, your editor in a white 72 S;for some reason, hardly anyone runsBS; in CS, watch for the Toyotas ofBruce Perry and Allen Kugler, theRX7 of Bob Miller, or the Fiero ofSusan Carson (you read that right,ask those guys if she can drive!);Wayne Petel is the class of DS in aFiat Xl/9; ES is between WayneSmitreski and Andre Downey in VWfrontdrivers; and in ASP, our ownRex Carle in that beautiful red 911

on Hoosiers. That may be all theclasses in which Porsches will

compete, but you could also keep aneye on Jon Milan in a GS Mustangturbo. Brad Klein in a honking Z28in ESP, and the aforementioned TomDisque in an AP Lotus Super 7.

This is not to say that no one elsecan win the PAX, I've seen somestrange things happen with coursedesigns that look like they'llfavor a power car, and a Rabbit endsup with the PAX win. And my big,by comparison, 911 wins on sometight courses that you'd swear youneeded an econobox to even run on.

Don't forget the interaction ofyour particular tire compound withwhatever surface you're runningthat day. We've seen places whereslicks don't work, the stickiestBFG doesn't work, but the people onBridgestones seem to have all thegrip they can use. And vice versa.Oh yes, rain. If all the hot dogsgot wet and ran 65s, then it driedout, your 924 only needs a 72.3 tobeat the Lotus! Seems that most

everyone has a chance, as long asyou drive the car to its potential,and that's the whole idea of theindex system. Uh, sorry. Ladies,but you run with the same index asthe men. If more women would

autocross regularly, there would beenough data to make a separateindex, but that's not happening yet.

Charity Autocross - Sept 23

Everything is coming together forour Charity Autocross, set forSeptember 23, at the Naval AirDevelopment Center, Warminster, PA.We will be running on the closedrunway once again, and we're usinga design from an SCCA Nationalevent; a fast and exciting course.

The event will be run a little

differently from our usual events.There will be four "open" heats,which means that you choose whenyou want to run. However, the heatswill be limited to 30 drivers each,so you should come early to ensureyou'll get the heat you want. Forthis event, you may pre-register bycalling 215-384-7539 between 7 and9 pm. This will save you the waitin the registration line. When youcall to pre-register, I will ask youto mail me your $15 entry fee in acheck made payable directly to St.Christopher's Hospital. You willneed only to pick up your tech formand sign the waiver when you arrive.If you plan to register the day ofthe event, it will be open from8:30 to 2:30.

With the open heat system, we willbe allowing 30 minutes between rungroups for course walk-throughs.We will also need several groups ofworkers to help the event runsmoothly. If you can work thecourse for a heat or two, pleaselet us know.

A sponsor form can be found on thenext page, so that you can recruityour friends and relatives for ourcause. Now is the time to pay themback for all the candy sales,magazine subscriptions and GirlScout cookies. Please help us helpSt. Chris's. Bring the completedform and the money you've raised tothe event with you.

Bridgestone is providing us with aset of tires among other prizes.Everyone who comes and donates atleast $15 will have a chance towin, including all drivers. Thedrawing will be held at the end ofthe event (no later than 5pm).

Remember, the class indices that wewill be using equalize the cars.You don't have to have the fastest

car to be the winner. This will be

open to all, from sportscars tofamily trucksters. Bring whateveryou feel most confident driving,and we'll class you properly.

Driver's Education

Riesentoter's track event season isover. It seems a little early inthe year for this to be true, buttrack availability sets ourschedule. We ran 4 events in five

months. It was a very busy time.Again, 1 want to thank a number ofpeople who conducted our program:Bill Miller, Registrar; JerryWeger, Tech; Janet Weger, TrackRegistration; Bill O'Connell, FlagCoordinator; Dave Donohue, Safety;Paul Margaritis, Refreshments, andlast but not least. Bob Russo,Chief Instructor for 3 events and

Axel Shield, Chief Instructor for 1event. There is a lot of effort

required to conduct a track eventand these folks selflessly andtirelessly did what needed to bedone. The whole Club in general,and 1 personally, thank you. 1would also like to thank the manyinstructors from our region as wellas others that helped out. Thanksto those who helped with Tech.

From a financial point of view, theseason was a great success. Atthis moment we do not know the

exact figures, but it is firmly inthe black.

We had a good turnout of beginnersthis year. We thank you for comingout and hope you found it anenjoyable time. We would like toknow how you felt about theexperience. We want to encourageany and all participants to let usknow not only what you may haveenjoyed, but also where you mightfeel there is room for improvement.

While our program is over for theseason, we are jointly promoting anevent at Mid-Ohio in September. Anapplication is on the next page.

Watkins Glen Report

Anyone interested in performanceautomobiles has heard of Watkins

Glen. In the late forties, raceswere run through the town streets.In the fifties, a special purposeroad course was constructed south

of the town. For many years, theUnited States Grand Prix was held

at the Glen. After the track lost

the GP, it encountered financialproblems and fell into disrepairand receivership. Six years or soago, a foundation funded by theCorning Glass Works bought thetrack. The foundation then hired

Daytona Motor Speedway, Inc. tomanage the facility. Bill France,Jr scheduled a Winston Cup Race andthe rest is history. The Glen hasreturned as a first class track.

On July 21-22, we conducted adriving event at the Glen. We hadabout 150 entrants. The weather

was perfect - warm and cloudy, butno rain. The first day, we startedten minutes late. The course

workers were very precise andcareful - appropriately so. OnSunday, we started 5 minutes aheadof schedule. The event ran verysmoothly. Everybody seemed to havea great time. We got many verypositive comments about the event.

The track management and allemployees are really interested incar club events. They are able,courteous, cooperative and apleasure to deal with. The RaceCommunications Association Flag andSafety Personnel are simply thebest there are.

Not only was the event safe and

fun, but we had a great meal andsocial event at the Glen Club

Saturday evening. Among otheramenities, the Glen has a cateringservice. Because of the tremendous

number of registrants, we were ableto subsidize a free meal for 126

people. The menu seemed to be wellreceived.

At the end of the day Sunday, anumber of people said it was thebest event they had ever attendedat the Glen. Those of you whostayed home and mowed your lawns inmiserable weather don't know what

you missed. Track events are avery well-kept secret, not only tothe general public, but toRiesentoter members as well.

Unless and until you attend a trackevent, you will not find out whatyour Porsche is capable of doing orwhat you can do with your Porsche.

Most importantly, however, you willmiss the fellowship and humaninteraction with people who areinterested in fun things, like you

We are still having a Top OnlyConcours at the Picnic, despite theunderwhelming response so far. Ifthere was some confusion over the

$5 fee, it has been waived, so allyou have to do is bring your car.For those of you not familiar withwhat "Top Only" means, it simplymeans that the judges will notinspect your wheel wells or thefront and rear suspension, andunderneath the engine. The contestis all about cleanliness, and to thedegree that the head judges decide,it's also about originality. So aclean well-kept street car cancompete. Be aware that they willlook under carpets, behind thingswhere you can't see in the engine,and anywhere else that a human handor finger will fit. If it's dirtyanywhere, they'll find it. Theywon't clean it for you, but theywill surely point out where yourcar could stand a little more

attention before it can be called

clean in a show sense. You will

also be able to see the score

sheets for each area of your car,so you'll have a work list alreadymade up for your preparation foryour next show. As the old sayinggoes, "nobody looses in a concours",because just prepping your car fora show gets it cleaner than it'sever been, and may even alert youto potential problems that youotherwise may not have uncovered.Here's an old timers tip: everybodyspends hours and hours waxing theexterior, and very little time onthe inside or the trunk, whichcount the same amount of points asyour paint job. So if you thinkyour car is real clean and could dowell under judging, then cleaneverything you can't see, and bringit on out.

The other show at the Picnic willbe People's Choice Judging, andhere everybody votes for theirfavorite car on display. It oftencomes down to which car the voter

would most like to have and that

seems OK. For this you don't needto clean the inside of the exhaustpipe or vacuum the dust off thewiring under the dash, just get itclean enough so you won't beembarrassed to have it on display.It obviously is YOUR favorite car,but it could help in the judging ifyou made it as attractive to otherpeople as possible. Nobody will beopening the lids, it is intended asonly a look-don't-touch display.The award goes to the mostdesirable or lustworthy or bestcolor or whatever else thepicnic-goers might dictate. Thisis pretty low-key competition, butit could give you a taste of whatcar shows are like.

All in all, it may sound like somuch drudgery to clean your car inplaces no one can see, but there isa certain satisfaction in KNOWING

that it is clean way back there.Some people like this kind ofcompetition and go to extremes to"beat the other guy". That's greatbecause it also provides us withbeautiful examples of the marque toenjoy. Some people have been knownto show their cars successfully,and drive them, too - a real trick.

judges will be required, and howmany trophies to order I

People's Choice entrants will be"screened" at the base of the hill,so its got to be clean enough toimpress, or you become a no-show.

This year the questions came allthe way from Monterey. As in thepast. Bill went through the TechQuiz we took at the Porsche Paradeand chose those questions toseparate the "men from the boys" or"women from the girls".

Approximately 50 brave souls hungin there, answered 30 questions in30 minutes or less and hoped they'dbe one of the recipients of thebrass key chains that were awarded.For the women, first place went toConnie Sweigart with a total of16.5 points, second place went toBetsi Leidy (12.5) and third placewent to Lisa Lutz (10). For themen, top honors went to D.R. Synderwith a score of 24, second to LarryHerman (He said there should havebeen more than one token 914

question and he would have donebetter!) score 22.5, third to VernLyle (21.75) and fourth to PaulMargaritis (19.75).

Tech Loose Ends

First of all, sorry about the lackof a Tech Session before the Summit

Point event. There was no time to

do it properly. Since the eventwas oversubscribed, this didn'tseem to deter anyone.

Naturally, I received my share ofcalls asking, "Where can I get mycar teched?" OK, I will try andanswer, but with the followingdisclaimer. I am sure that I am

leaving someone out and I apologizebeforehand: Porsche dealers; anyshop advertising in DER GASSER; anycommercial shop servicing Porsches.

Remember that having your car assafe as possible is ultimately theowners responsibility, so pick yourestablishments carefully. There arealso Club members authorized to tech

your car. If you need help, feelfree to call them, but remember itis not their obligation to do so.Sometimes they can be bribed, infact they can all be bribed, itsjust that the bribe may vary. CallBob Patton, Bob Russo, Bill Cooper,John Williamson, or Jerry Weger,phone numbers on page 23.

Another popular question is "Whattools will I need at a Tech

Session?" Obviously that issomewhat dependent on what you wantto accomplish. Dropping a smallblock Chevy into your 914 willrequire one or two more tools thanI have listed, but at least youcould start, if not finish,virtually any project with thefollowing basic tools:Set of metric combination wrenches,

7 through 19 mm3/8 drive socket set, 9 thru 19 mmSelection of quality screwdrivers,

both Phillips and regularSet of metric alien wrenches

Vise grip pliers; a small ball peenhammer; oil filter wrench; Bandaids; and, of course, a tool box.

You are now reasonably equipped, andindividual tools can be purchasedas needed. You have also spentabout $100 at a place like Sears.

I was really gratified by the amountof help I received both at the TechSessions and track events, and Iwant to thank everyone who pitchedin. This really does seem to bethe Year of Involvement.

For those of you who have a glimmerof interest but haven't quite takenthe plunge, come to any event. Youmay be surprised at the congenialityof the participants. Nuff said.

Race Car Show - Sept 30

The Philadelphia Vintage Grand Prix,scheduled for June 29-30, 1991,will be unveiled to all of

Philadelphia at a gala press partyon September 30. The party will befrom l-4pm at the HorticulturalCenter in Fairmount Park. The

highlight will be a collection ofpre-70 race cars, including an RSKand maybe another Porsche surprise.

Because of the role the Porsche

Club will play in the vintage event,you will be sent an invitation nextmonth to the race car show/party,along with information on how youcan join the Philadelphia VintageGrand prix Association (PVGPA).PVGPA is running the race and allthe attendant activities, and itsefforts will directly benefitFairmount Park.

Voltage Regulators

The charging system on an automobileis used to supply energy to theever-increasing number of electricaldevices on a car. Most of thedemand is met as it occurs by thealternator or generator, whichconverts mechanical energy toelectrical energy as it is needed.Some electrical energy is convertedto chemical energy in the battery,which can be stored for use whenthe engine is not running. Youconvert the chemical energy back toelectrical energy on demand, whenyou use the starter or play theradio with the engine off.

The most sophisticated part of theelectrical system is the regulator.On 356 and 912 models (through 69),the regulator was mechanical, usingrelays to physically switch more orless resistance in series with thefield coil in the generator, thuscontrolling the energy output. Onall other Porsches, including the912E, (which is really a 914 inwolf's clothing), an alternator,which is lighter and more efficientthan a generator, was used toproduce the electricity. Theregulator that has always been usedwith Porsche alternaotrs has norelays, but uses transistors forswitching field current, and othersolid state devices such as Zenierdiodes and thermistors are used toestablish control parameters.Solid state regulation is moreresponsive to varying powerrequirements caused by load andtemperature variations, and thephysical characteristics of theregulator gives it greatlyincreased longevity in relation tothe archaic mechanical units.

The weak point of the late typeregulator is their sensitivity to

voltage spikes. When current flowsthrough a conductor, a magneticfield is built up around thatconductor. When the current is cutoff, the energy in the magneticfield collapses back into the wire,acting like a transformer whichmultiplies the battery voltage,causing a short period voltagespike. Regulators are protectedagainst the 60 to 75 volt spikesthat normally occur when thestarter or air conditioner clutch

is turned off, but externallyinduced high current spikes such asarc welding might produce, can andhave destroyed the solid statedevices in the electronic

regulators, when the mechanicalunits would not be damaged underthe same conditions.

The battery should be disconnectedwhenever arc welding is done on anypart of the car. A few seconds

spent to disconnect the batterymight save you $100+ in diagnosisand replacement expense. Are youlistening, homebrew sway barinstallers?
