50 YearsLooking Back
On May 28, 1959 Regis High School proudly celebrated the commencement exercises for its f irst graduating class of 92 students. Fifty years later, we checked in with graduate John Willenborg and asked him to share a few memories and advice for current high school seniors. Here’s what he had to say:
Thoughts on Teachers:“With the benefit of 50-year, 20-20 hindsight, I now appreciate the invalu-able experience that was high school and, in particular, the Regis senior class of 1959.
In reflecting on high school, it is impossible to ignore our teachers—reli-gious and lay faculty. They had widely different personalities and some are more fondly remembered than others. However, they had much in common. They were dedicated and caring; each had a no-nonsense approach to edu-cation; they were not in teaching for themselves, but for the well-being and development of their students; they were a lot like our parents, who gave them permission to act in their stead; and their reward was in seeing students progress from immature teen-agers to responsible adults.”
Thoughts on Students & Class-mates“The Regis class of 1959 brought together students from several dif-ferent schools and with many diverse experiences. We were Catholic and most were from modest backgrounds with caring parents. Our expectations were different, but we were eager to begin a new adventure in a new school. We became active in varied in-school and out-of-school activities—sports, drama, music, debate, cheerleading,
photography, the Regis Page, art and the sciences. When we graduated, we struck out on our own, but many solid relationships remained. Our recent class reunions have reinforced my belief that the Class of ’59 was special—made up of first-class people who now share a valued, common heritage.”
Thoughts on Catholic Education:“To attend a Catholic school presents wonderful opportunities: to learn from dedicated teachers; to participate in enriching school-related activities; to share your education experience with classmates with similar interests and values; to understand and appreciate the role and importance of Christian-ity in an increasingly secular world; and to establish relationships based on the common bond of Catholicism that may last for a lifetime.”

Regis Class of 195950th Reunion
For more than 10 years, Dan Sullivan, a LaSalle 1967 graduate has made Xavier athletics more than just a past time. This dedicated spectator has given a whole
new meaning to the term, “Super Fan!”
On September 19, 2008 Dan was recognized by Activities Director, Mike Winker and received a standing ovation for having attended every Xavier foot-ball game since Xavier opened .
Dan’s commitment to Xavier extends beyond athletics. Dan was a member of the Alumni Board for more than 30 years and remains an active Alumni Appeal volunteer. Dan is currently serv-ing on the Historical Alumni Display committee where his vast knowledge of LaSalle and Regis history have played a vital role in the direction and develop-ment of the display.
As a Xavier High School senior, I’m writing to thank the many alumni who have generously supported Xavier High School through the Alumni Appeal in the past. Many opportunities available to students like me, namely the opportunities to grow spiritually, and develop life long goals for our futures, are a direct result of your gift. Your generous response to this annual appeal is very important and will make a difference in the services and programs available to current and fu-ture Xavier students. Mary and her husband Don live in Cedar Rapids and are parents to three children: Ryan (X04), Kate (07), and Patrick (X11). Mary is a teacher’s aide in the second grade at St. Pius Grade School. The Chizeks are members of St. Pius parish.
Lisa and her husband Tom live in Hiawatha and are parents to three children: Blake (11), Laini (8), and Alexa (6). The Whit-tens are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Lisa is a hairstylist at Expressions Salon and Spa.
Nick is employed with Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, IL. Nick spends his free time volunteering with Abbott’s computer science high school program, at local forest preserves, or enjoying Chica-go’s ballroom dance/music scene.
More than 1,000 alumni will be con-tacted and asked to invest in Xavier High School. We find that often, alumni are so grateful for the educational experience they received at LaSalle, Regis, or Xavier, that they are happy to show their sup-port of current students. In 2008, alumni contributed nearly $80,000 to Xavier.

On Saturday, November 29, more than 50 alumni laced up their running shoes and headed for Xavier High School to participate in the First Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament. Fans packed the stands for game one - when Alumni who graduated between 1959 and 1979 took on graduates from the 90s. De-spite the 30 point lead given to the 59-79ers, Team 90s persevered and took the game.
Excitement built as Team 80s took on Team 2000s. The 30 point lead in favor of Team 80s leveled the playing field just enough to help them earn the win. The consolation game was won by The 59-79ers and the championship game was won by Team 90s - by three points in over-time!
The Alumni Association would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many alumni and friends who participated in the tournament as members of a team, volunteers, coaches, and spectators. A special thank you to tournament chairs Angie (Pernicone) Charipar (R90) and Brad Joens (R96), announcer and Booster Club president, Pat Collins (R83), and Alumni Board president, Ted Borelli (R88).

Community Service Day ‘08
Catholic Schools Week is an annual national celebration of the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in providing a values-added ed-ucation for America’s young people. Catholic schools are proud of their educational network that emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical, and social values in their students.
The Xavier Campus Ministry team, including Janet Saterlee, Christine Hrncirik, and Fr. Dustin Vu work to provide a wide variety of oppor-tunities for students to explore their spirituality including TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) and Kairos Retreats (Kairos is a Greek word meaning “The Lord’s Time”) as well as class retreats, weekly Mass, service projects and trips, among others.

Saints Get In the Giving GrooveThanksgiving FastThe Xavier class of 2009 has a lot more than graduation on their mind! The class made the decision to focus their charitable efforts for the year toward the Kids Against Hunger program. This program raises money to buy food for starving children in third world countries. On Tuesday, November 18 nearly 250 students participated in a fast and donated the money they would normally spend on lunch to the Kids Against Hunger program. The students showed solidarity with the hungry as they reverently joined together in prayer. Between homecoming activi-ties and the fast, students have raised enough money to provide 6,000 meals for starving children this year.
Angel TreeEach November, Xavier students and faculty remember those less fortunate in the Cedar Rapids community through the Angel Tree program. The Angel Tree program benefits Tanager Place, a local non-profit organization, which provides services to children and families challenged by social and psychological needs. Christmas gifts for more than 150 children were provided by Xavier students and faculty in 2007 and 125 in 2008.
Mini Dance MarathonOn Saturday, January 31 Xavier students will once again, rally for a cause - this time, by dancing. The Mini-Dance Marathon, was first organized by Xavier students in January 2008 in honor of Xavier alumna Kira Carstensen (X05) who lost her life-long battle with cancer in March 2007. In 2008, students raised more than $13,000 in support of the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. This year, the students hope to increase their support to $15,000. Xavier seniors help clean up flood damage at Ushers Ferry on Service Day.
The 2009 Catholic Schools Week theme, “Celebrate Service,” is especially appropriate for the students and faculty at Xavier High School. “Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow, Serving Forever” isn’t just a tag line for Xavier. It truly is a mission that drives our com-munity.
On October 29, Xavier students raked lawns and washed windows at more than 300 homes in the Cedar Rapids area in addition to assisting two par-ishes and local non-profit, Miracles in Motion. On the same day, more than 100 Xavier seniors assisted with flood recovery efforts at Usher’s Ferry; working side by side with AmeriCorp volunteers.

On Friday, February 20, two outstanding alumni, Debbie (Miller) Jacobs (R69) and Ladd Wessels (L80) will be honored by induction into the LaSalle - Regis - Xavier Alumni Hall of Fame. Debbie will be inducted as an Outstanding Alumni in recognition of her commitment to Catholic secondary education in Cedar Rapids and Ladd will be inducted as an Athlete in recognition of his athletic ac-complishments at LaSalle and the University of Iowa.
The induction ceremony will take place during half-time of the Xavier vs. Dubuque Senior varsity boys basketball game. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. and a reception honoring the inductees will immediately follow the game.

Zach Johnson (R94) and his wife Kim were recognized as “Outstand-ing Individual Philanthropists” by the Eastern Iowa chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals
(AFP) on No-vember 13, 2008.
For the fourth year, Zach and his wife Kim have partnered with AEGON USA on the Birdies That Care program, a fundraising partnership benefiting area charities includ-ing Tanager Place, Waypoint, Community Free Health Clinic, and Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids. Zach says his life’s work - “chasing around a little white ball” would mean little to him if he and Kim couldn’t use it to help others.
Kudos!Dr. John Wollner was recognized as an “Outstand-ing Volunteer Fundraiser” by the Eastern Iowa chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) on No-
vember 13, 2008. Dr. Wollner was the Capital Campaign Chair of the St. Matthew Parish’s successful $6.5 million capital camapaign. Dr. Wollner was also recognized as Man of the Year by the St. Matthew Holy Name Society and has been recognized by the American Can-cer Society for outstanding volunteer activi-ties. Dr. Wollner has successfully chaired several fundraising campaigns including the 2008 Xavier Foundation Business Appeal and has been honored by both the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo Family Practice Resi-dency programs as Preceptor of the Year.
