From EDEN to Earth: Technology and the Modernisation

of EU Higher Education

EDEN 2015 – Barcelona, June 10th, 2015

Xavier PRATS MONNÉ Director-General for Education and Culture European Commission

Paradise on Earth or fad?

"Books will soon be obsolete in schools. It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture".Thomas Edison, 1913

"Television won’t last more than six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” Darryl Zanuck 20th Century Fox, 1946

Demography, globalisation and technology will transform:

The global distribution of talent

The way we teach and learn

The talent pool is changing…

… and will continue to change

A classroom in 1915…

An operating room in 1915…

… and in 2015

2015

The roles: Teacher vs researcher

The times: Degree vs lifetime subscription

The content: Books vs blended learning

Technology is deconstructing education…

Knowledge is created by flexible, collaborative networks working in unstable environments…

…but most education institutions are organised vertically, by department and discipline, and are highly regulated…

…so the main challenge is not to modernise pedagogies but public administrations.

…but the real change is in the nature of knowledge

We need to think of another type of education

High School nº 1. Xiaogan, Hubei (China) - May 2012
