Here’s how:] What does XC give you? A chance to get into great shape, join an amazing team, meet new friends, encounter amazing challenges that will help you grow, travel to cool places for meets, and build your college and life resume! Common Questions Answered Q: I’ve heard that crosscountry runners have to run upwards of 8 miles some days, is this true? A: This is not true for most of the runners. If you can complete one lap around the track you’ll be fine. Most beginning runners are often just building up to 12 miles a day. A few top varsity runners may even run 10 or more miles but only have having built to that level for several years. Q: Isn’t crosscountry an individual sport where I will have to run and compare myself to others on the team? A: Although pushing yourself will be somewhat of an individual quest, the sport is very team oriented and each member is very important to the entire team’s success. From the team cheer and group warmup to the fact that almost all members will factor into the team score helps promote team camaraderie which makes this a most memorable sport to participate. Q: How can crosscountry be fun if all we do is run every day? A: Of course running is the focus of our activities but members of the cross country team do so much more than just run. We often play games for practice like capture the flag, ultimate Frisbee, soccer, and games you create! Also, we will have pot lucks, hamburger and hotdog dinners. Additionally we have special outings in the off season and during the season. Our team is incredible. We are full of positive vigor, hard work, determination, and lots and lots of sweat. We work out hard, we feel like we are "gonna die" and we keep pressing forward. We run miles and miles in the hot months of summer and autumn and basically melt. We lace our neon racing flats, stick our toes on the chalk line, and sprint off with the gun, competing against the nagging inside of us that begs us to slow down. But we don't. We are fighters. And we are goofy, silly, free, fun, and happy. We are Summerville Cross Country. There are incentives for logging summer miles!
