EASTERN OREGON NOTEWORTHY• Th e Mountaineers have run in every Charles Bowles Invite the past 11 years.• Th e EOU women have 10 entries in the race, while the men have 12.• Last year, the Eastern Oregon women fi nished sixth and the men were fi ft h.• Eastern’s Karlee Coff ey was fourth overall in the women’s race last season.• Nine of the 10 Cascade Collegiate Conference schools are running in the meet on the women’s and men’s sides.• Th ere are 23 women’s schools and 22 men’s schools running in the Gold Races.• Th e meet, considered one of the biggest in the west, has two seperate races, the Cardinal, which features NCAA Div. 1, Div. 2 and Div. 3 schools, and the Gold race, which is NAIA, JUCO, clubs and unattached runners.• Th e Mountaineer women return 11 runners from last year’s team, while the men bring back 12.• Eastern’s men opened the season ranked No. 18, while the women were No. 19.• Fellow CCC member, Northwest Christian, has its women’s cross team ranked No. 5 in the NAIA. SPOKANE, Wash. – Th e Eastern Oregon University women’s and men’s cross country teams ran Saturday in their second meets of the season at the Erik An-derson Invitational.
Cristal Delgado ran a very strong race to fi nish 69th out of 228 fi nishers. Delgado covered the 6,000-me-ter layout in 23:34 to lead the Mountaineer women. Delgado was followed across the line by Laura Hanson in 118th at 24:19. Christy Roe was 143rd in at 24:50.
Talissa Baldovino made her season debut in 167th in 25:23. Rounding out the competition for EOU was Jacky Sheoships (187th in 26:00) and Kayla Chris-tensen (190th in 26:05). Both ran faster average per mile times than two weeks ago over the shorter 4,000-meter route in Nampa, Idaho.
For the men, the race distance was the standard 8000 meters. Although a good number of the men (Gus Titus, Hans Roelle, Alex Martinez, Conor Wood, Solame Castillo and Calvin Edward) all ran
their fi rst 8K.
Th e EOU men fi nished 12th out of 25 teams. Th e winning team was Colorado School of Mines, the third ranked team in NCAA Div. 2.
Leading the Mountaineers was Isaac Updike in 34th out of 247, with a time of 25:42. Updike was followed closely by the grouped trio of Brian Nelson (72nd in 26:11), Brian Bragg (77th in 26:14) and Ryan Booth (79th in 26:18).
Aft er that trio there was a minute gap to the fi ft h Mountaineer, Josh Wise (147th in 27:18). Jeff Roy was next in 151st at 27:23, and Gus Titus, in just his third cross country race, crossed the line as the seventh Mountaineer (156th in 27:30). Titus was followed closely by Hans Roelle (159th in 27:31) and Ramon Hernandez (163rd in 27:39).
Rounding out EOU’s runners were Alex Martinez (173rd in 27:50), Michael Wanta (178th in 27:53), Salome Castillo (226th in 30:00), Calvin Edward (229th in 30:10) and Conor Wood (241st in 31:25).

Welch enters his 21st year at the helm of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and 2011-12 will mark his 10th year as head coach of track & fi eld team.
In that time, he has guided the men’s team to the NAIA National Cross Country Championships 16 out of the last 20 years, where they have fi nished in the top-20, 14 times and the top-10, eight times, including a second place fi nish in 2002. In 2004 they placed seventh out of the 28 team fi eld. In 1993 and 2000 the men placed sixth, in 1994 they fi nished eighth and 10th in 2001 & 2003.
En route to the national meet, the men have won two NAIA District II Championships and 12 of the last 17 Cascade Conference titles, including the 2007 title. Along the way, the Men’s Cross teams have earned their coach two NAIA District II, 12 Cascade Conference, and four NAIA Regional Coach of the Year honors.
On the women’s side, Welch has guided the team near the top of the NAIA cross-country ranks. In 1995, EOU’S women’s team earned their fi rst national ranking in school history and in 1996 qualifi ed for their fi rst trip to the NAIA National Championships. Th e 1997, 1998 and 1999 teams all advanced to the national meet where they fi nished 6th, 9th, and 3rd, respectively. Along the way, the team won fi ve consecutive Cascade Conference titles from 1995-1999. Th e women’s teams have earned Welch eight conference Coach of the Year awards, one women’s con-ference All-Sport award, and one NAIA National Coach of the Year honor.
In 2004, the women fi nished 16th at the NAIA National Championships aft er a second-place fi nish in the confer-ence that earned Welch his sixth CCC Coach of the Year award. Th ey then followed up with a Conference title, Conference Coach of the Year award, and 22nd place National fi nish in ‘05.
While coaching the women in 07 they also won the con-ference title, earning Welch another CCC Coach of the Year award and the Mountaineers went on to place 22nd at Nationals.
Prior to coming to EOU, Welch spent three years as the men’s cross country and track coach at Highline Com-munity College in Des Moines, Washington and two years at the University of Kansas in Lawrence as a student as-sistant cross country and track coach. Welch and his wife Talia have three children: Amanda, Nick, and Bennett.
