NAIA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
EOU STANDINGS IN THE POLLS
The Eastern Oregon University Women‘s took a big jump in the final NAIA Cross Country
Coaches Poll from No. 22 to No. 11. The strong second-place showing at the conference meet
helped the ladies make the drastic leap.
The men dropped to the No. 22 spot after a fourth place finish at the conference meet in Portland.
It is the first time all season the Mounties have not been inside the to 15 in the rankings. The
ranking was just high enough to get the men the final at-large berth into the National Champion-

WOMEN SHINE AT CONFERNCE CHAMPIONSHIP PORTLAND, OR – Senior Karlee Coffey‘s second place individual finish sparked the Eastern
Oregon University women‘s cross country team to an surprising second place team finish at the
Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships here Saturday.
The ladies finished 71 points to the 72 of No. 7 ranked Northwest Christian. The College of
Idaho claimed the women‘s team title with 39 points.
―Our ladies ran the race of the season,‖ beamed EOU Head Coach Ben Welch. ―It is one of the
best conference meets that we have run in the past five or six years.‖
The Eastern women entered the meet as the number three team in the conference, but run with a
mission from the starting gun over the 5000 meter course.
Coffey paced the way for Eastern as she battled College of Idaho‘s Hillary Holt from the start.
The duo ran together through the entire race, with Holt finally pulling away in the last mile. Cof-
fey ran 17:05.38 to Holt‘s 16:52.11.
Following Coffey across the line was junior Jodine Steemers, who went out with Coffey and Holt
at the beginning. Steemers had company from Concordia‘s Mikel Elliott for much of the race
before gaining an advantage of up to fifteen meters late in the race. A strong kick by Elliott al-
lowed her to just nip Steemers at the finish. Steemers finished in 18.06.80, an almost 30 second
improvement on her season best.
Senior Leigh Anne MacCarthy, who missed the Mountaineers volleyball win, last night over
Oregon Tech to prepare for today‘s meet, ran her lifetime best to finish 13th. MacCarthy started
conservatively but continued to move up in the field throughout the race. She broke into the top
15 by the end of the first mile and ran strong to the finish. She ran 18:41.71.
Senior Talissa Baldovino gave the Mounties their fourth lady inside the top twenty-five, finishing
22nd. Baldovino ran in the top 30 most of the race and used a strong finishing mile to move into
finish spot. Her time of 18:56.23 was a personal best by 15 seconds.
Eastern‘s top five was rounded out by junior Cristal Delgado. She started in the middle of the
pack and continually moved her way up through the field to earn a 33rd place finish in 19:39.39.
―The top five ladies ran real well. Four them ran personal best races,‖ said Welch.
Freshman Kailey Wilson and senior Jessianne Heley rounded out the Mountainers top seven
runners finishing 48th (20:15.38) and 60th (20:42.67) respectively.
Freshman Hailee Hollingsworth, 68th (21:26.70) and sophomore Audrey Love, 73rd (23:26.55)
rounded out the Eastern squad.
EASTERN OREGON WOMEN NOTEWORTHY Karlee Coffey aims for her fourth all-American honors at the NAIA Cross Country National
Championships. She has finished 12th, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.
If Coffey earns all-American honors this year, she will become the first Mountaineer to have
received that honor four times.
Eastern Oregon women are making their 10th trip to the national meet under head coach Ben
Welch.
The highest finish for the ladies at Nationals is 3rd in 1999. They also have three other finishes
inside the top ten, 6th in 1997, 7th in 2002, and 9th in 1998.
EOU Head Cross Country coach, Ben Welch was the women‘s Coach-of-the-Year in 1997.
The EOU women are ranked No. 11 in the final NAIA Cross Country Coaches Poll.
Fellow CCC members, College of Idaho, Northwest Christian, and Concordia will be taking
part in the National Championships.
This is the ninth time that Eastern will have both a women‘s and men‘s team at the national
championship in the same year.

WEEK 7: NAIA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
LAST TIME OUT
MEN STRUGGLE AT CONFERNCE MEET PORTLAND, OR – Junior Isaac Updike ran the best he has all season to pace the Eastern Ore-
gon University men‘s cross country team to a fourth place finish here Saturday at the Cascade
Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships at Lents Park.
The men scored 108 points to finish behind Southern Oregon (28), the College of Idaho (62), and
Concordia (82).
―The men made a rough day in an extremely tough conference,‖ offered EOU Head Cross Coun-
try Coach Ben Welch. ―Despite that we had a few guys that ran really well.‖
The men got out well at the start, running at the middle of the pack through the first mile. The
group stayed together through much of the 8000 meter event.
Updike began to move forward after the 5000 meter mark and continued to drive to the finish. He
came across the finish line in eleventh place in a time of 25:24.56. The finish also guarantees him
a trip to the NAIA National Cross Country Championships November 17 in Fort Vancouver,
Washington.
Sophomore Hans Roelle ran his best race of the season to finish 16th. Roelle ran much of the
race in the top 30 and like Updike, continued to pick off opposing runners as the race progressed.
His time of 25:40.15 garnered him a personal best by 15 seconds.
Junior Kody Coxen struggled most of the race and finished in the 23rd spot in 26:13.28.
Junior Zach Seely ran his best race ever as a Mountaineer, finishing 28th in 26:17.50. He also
finished as the Mounties fourth runner for the first time at Eastern.
Following Seely was a group of four guys who finished within sixteen seconds of him. Freshman
Kody Shriver finished one place behind Seely in 29th (26:17.50). Senior Ryan Booth was 32nd
(26:26.34), followed by junior Carlos Hernandez, 34th (26:29.66) and sophomore Gus Titus, 35th
(26:33.09).
Sophomore Alex Martinez, 44th (27:09.22) and junior Humberto Bravo, 48th (27:17.94) rounded
things out for the Mountaineers.

WEEK 7: NAIA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
HEAD COACH
Ben Welch
22nd Season
Kansas, 1988
Welch enters his 22nd year at the helm of the men‘s and
women‘s cross country teams and 2012-13 will mark his
11th year as head coach of track & field team.
In that time, he has guided the men‘s team to the NAIA
National Cross Country Championships 16 out of the last 20
years, where they have finished in the top-20, 14 times and
the top-10, eight times, including a second place finish in
2002. In 2004 they placed seventh out of the 28 team field.
In 1993 and 2000 the men placed sixth, in 1994 they fin-
ished eighth and 10th in 2001 & 2003.
En route to the national meet, the men have won two NAIA
District II Championships and 12 of the last 17 Cascade
Conference titles, including the 2007 title. Along the way,
the Men‘s Cross teams have earned their coach two NAIA
District II, 12 Cascade Conference, and four NAIA Re-
gional Coach of the Year honors.
On the women‘s side, Welch has guided the team near the
top of the NAIA cross-country ranks. In 1995, EOU‘S
women‘s team earned their first national ranking in school
history and in 1996 qualified for their first trip to the NAIA
National Championships. The 1997, 1998 and 1999 teams
all advanced to the national meet where they finished 6th,
9th, and 3rd, respectively. Along the way, the team won five
consecutive Cascade Conference titles from 1995-1999. The
women‘s teams have earned Welch eight conference Coach
of the Year awards, one women‘s conference All-Sport
award, and one NAIA National Coach of the Year honor.
In 2004, the women finished 16th at the NAIA National
Championships after a second-place finish in the conference
that earned Welch his sixth CCC Coach of the Year award.
They then followed up with a Conference title, Conference
Coach of the Year award, and 22nd place National finish in
‗05.
While coaching the women in 07 they also won the confer-
ence title, earning Welch another CCC Coach of the Year
award and the Mountaineers went on to place 22nd at Na-
tionals.
Prior to coming to EOU, Welch spent three years as the
men‘s cross country and track coach at Highline Commu-
nity College in Des Moines, Washington and two years at
the University of Kansas in Lawrence as a student assistant
cross country and track coach. Welch and his wife Talia
have three children: Amanda, Nick, and Bennett.
