Color Print Quality

29. COLOR PRINT PROBLEMS: TROUBLESHOOTING COMMON PRINT DEFECTS

Even with routine maintenance, print problems can occur.

There are certain print media you should not use.HP warns against using certain media like embossed paper thatwill not print satisfactorily and could even harm your printer.Check your Printer Operator’s Manual or the HP website.

Print is lighter or darker than intended.

• Before packaging, we test all our assembled cartridgesin a printer to assure their fitness for use with the density(image darkness or lightness) setting in the standard middlerange. Y our printer automatically adjusts color. Y ou may wantthe graphics on the pages you print with your replacementcartridges to appear ex actly like the originals, or you may justwant to change the colors slightly to your preference.• Adjust the colors as described1. Press the MENU or the Select ( ) button to enter the

Menus.2. Press the down arrow until you highlight CONFIGURE

DEVICE.3. Press the Select button to select the PRINT Q UA LITY menu.4. Press the Select button to select A DJUST COLOR.5. Press the Select button to select HIGHLIGHTS.6. Select the color or colors you want to make darker or lighter.

For ex ample, if the printed page appears to have too muchblue (cyan), you can change the default cyan setting of“ 0” all the way down to “ -5.” Y ou can do the same with ma-genta, yellow and black. Conversely, you can add more ofeach color by adjusting each upward as high as “ 5.”

7. Print a sample page after each set of adjustments andadjust the colors further, if necessary, until the colors onthe page are to your preference.

• Note: A new density setting may take 20 to 100 pagesbefore the printer makes all of the proper adjustments.

Light Print or Color Imbalance

• Can also be caused by “ toner starvation” that usually oc-curs at the end of the life cycle of a toner cartridge.• Y our printer display warns if it is out of toner. Replace thecartridge indicated.• DO NOT try to get more life out of color cartridges byremoving them from the printer and shaking them. Tonercan leak.• Light print can also be related to humidity levels. Lowlevels of humidity (RH), typically occurring in winter, highelevations or desert-like climates can cause light print. Highhumidity levels can result in denser (darker) print. Eitherre-set the density levels (as described above) or wait for ac-ceptable conditions.

Marks on the back of the Page HP Color 4600 & 4650

• Toner smears or a mark on the back of the page is causedby improper post height.• On the back of the toner cartridge are posts that willmove the toner cartridge away from the belt when not inuse during printing

• If the post height is not within specification marks will ap-pear on the Image Transfer Belt (OPC) & back of the paper.• Replace the effected toner cartridge

Print q uality problems

• A printer calibration may clear up the problem. Calibratethe printer as described.

1. Press the MENU or the Select ( ) button to enter theMenus.

2. Press the down arrow until you highlight CONFIGUREDEVICE.

3. Press the Select button to select the PRINT Q UA LITY menu.4. Press the down arrow to highlight FULL CA LIBRA TION

NOW.5. Wait for the calibration to complete

• Print a page and see if the defect disappears.• If the defect doesn’t disappear, you can run a quicktroubleshooting test to determine whether the defect is as-sociated with a specific color cartridge:

1. Press the ME N U or the Select ( ) button to enter theMenus.

2. Press the down arrow until you highlight DIA GNOSTICSand press the Select button.

3. Press the down arrow until you highlight PQ TROUBLE-SHOOTING.

4. Press the Select ( ) button to print the pages.

The printer will print four color pages and a configurationpage. By looking at the color pages, you should be able toidentify if a specific color cartridge is causing the defect byseeing the problem only in that specific color.• If the defect is in a specific color, replace the color car-tridge and see if the print defect goes away.• If the defect appears on all color pages, the problem maybe with other printer components and not the cartridge.• The configuration page shows whether the printer isproperly calibrated for color.• A shift in hues or incorrect colors will show up as missingcolor patches on the configuration page.• Shadows or halos behind tex t may show up as misalignedCPR (Color Plane Registration) bars in the four corners of theconfiguration page. In both cases, re-calibrating the printershould resolve the problems. If not, technical support may berequired.

HP Color LaserJet 4600/5500: Toner Leaking

The HP Color LaserJet (CLJ ) 4600 and 5500 represented asignificant upgrade over earlier generations of color laserprinters like the original CLJ and CLJ 5, the CLJ 4500/4550,and the CLJ 8500/8550. Their print speed was faster, printquality was better, and the printing process was simpler, butthese newer printers also have some characteristic problemsof their own.One of the most common of these problems can occur withany of the cartridges, but seem to be most common withmagenta. This problem takes several forms:• Toner leaking and spilling into the printer.• Toner streaks on either side of the page, and/or on thetransfer belt.

• Clicking noises in the cartridges.

These issues can all be caused by the same thing, and it’s notsomething that you would ever guess! Fortunately, the solu-tion turned up in an HP service note. The basic problem is apeculiarity of the DC controller firmware, and mostly occurswhen you are printing monochrome documents from tray 1(the manual or multi-purpose tray) with the tray 1 siz e andtype both set to “any.” In this mode, the printer performsan extra toner purge and cleaning cycle after every printjob. If you print this type of job often enough, the wastetoner hopper in the cartridge will fill up prematurely, caus-ing the symptoms described above. It is important to realiz e that once this happens, you mustreplace the affected cartridge. The other solutions we areabout to describe will prevent this from happening again, but they cannot save a cartridge that already has its wastetoner hopper filled! So, whatever else you do, replace theaffected cartridge (usually magenta). For the rest of thesolution, there are two options. The simpler— and cheaper— option is to go into the PaperHandling Menu and change the tray 1 settings. Set ei-ther “Tray 1 Siz e” or “Tray 1 Type” to something specific, anything other than “any.” Of course, this decreases yourfl exibility in how you can use tray 1. So you may prefer theother solution: upgrade the DC controller firmware.U nfortunately, this DC controller firmware is not fl ashable,so the only way to upgrade it is to replace the DC controller(part number RG5-6391 for the 4600, C9656-67905 for the5500). All new DC controllers will be the upgraded versions, but you can check your existing DC controller by printinga Configuration Page and checking the “Printer Number”under the Printer Information Section. This number shouldbe 6D or higher for the 4600 and 70 or higher for the 5500.If not, you have the old version.HP recommends that you also upgrade your main printerfirmware at this time, even though it has no direct bearingon this problem. This firmware is fl ashable, and you candownload the file free of charge from HP’s website (www.hp.com). You will find it under the “Drivers and Downloads”section. To sum up, if you have the toner leakage problem on one ofthese printers, you need to do two things:1. Replace the affected cartridge (usually magenta) and

clean any excess toner from the transfer belt and printer.2. Either change your tray 1 settingsPerform these two steps, and you should solve your prob-lems with leaking toner.

Print quality problems associated with the environment Print quality problems might be due to abnormal charac-teristics of the work environment, for example, excessivelyhumid or dry conditions. Verify that the printer is in a workenvironment within the following specifications:

Environmental specifi cations Environment Recommended AllowedTemperature 17 to 25° C 10 to 30° C

(62.6 to 77° F) (50 to 86° F)Humidity 30 to 70% RH 10 to 80% RHAltitude 0 to 2600 m

(0 to 8530 ft)

Chip Related Issues

30. Understanding Chips & What They do

Toner Cartridges since the HP 4100 have been utiliz ingchip technology to work with the printer to do a verity ofthings from Page Yield to detect that a Toner Cartridge wasinstalled. Other manufactures have similar technology thatworks in the same way.

Chips will do the following:1. Page Yield2. Estimated page yield3. Pages printed4. Replacement of Toner Cartridge

Beside these few things the other main purpose if tellwhether a Genuine Toner Cartridge has been installed. When a remanufactured chip is working correctly theprinter can tell the difference. If a error does occur theerror will Non Hewlett Packard Toner Cartridge installed or10.10.XX error will occur. These errors in most cases will notkeep the printer from functioning.

31. 10.10.X X Supply Error Hewlett Packard

The 10.10.XX supply error is a warning that the printer cannot detect a Toner Cartridge. In some models simply pressing the green check mark but-ton on the printer will allow you to continue.

In color printing the error will be followed10.10.00/01/02/03 the last two digits will identify the prob-lem cartridge.

10.10.00 Black

10.10.01 Cyan

10.10.02 Magenta

10.10.03 Yellow
