Conference ChairmenT.-P. Fries, RWTH Aachen University, GermanyA. Zilian, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany

Conference TopicsAmong the topics discussed at the conference are:- XFEM in fracture mechanics (cracks, crack growth etc.)- XFEM in general solid mechanics (bimaterials, inclusions, shear bands, solidification)

- XFEM in biomechanics (biofilms, virtual surgery etc.)- XFEM in fluid mechanics (two-fluid flows, boundary layers etc.)- XFEM in optimization and inverse problems- New formulations of the XFEM (corrected XFEM, blendingelements, higher-order etc.)

- Interface conditions with the XFEM- Boundary conditions in the XFEM- Numerical integration in the XFEM- Error estimation and adaptivity in the XFEM- GFEM, PUFEM, PUM and other methods related to the XFEM

ObjectivesThe extended finite element method (XFEM) has recentlygained enormous attention in computational engineering.Compared to the standard finite element method, thismethod enables improved approximations of non-smoothsolutions such as those including jumps, kinks, andsingularities. This is achieved by providing a concept forenriching the approximation space such that a priori knownsolution properties are included. Typical applications of theXFEM are found in fracture mechanics, biomechanics, andtwo-fluid flows. Many current research activities extend theapplication fields of the XFEM and investigate newformulations and special issues of enriched approximations.

XFEM 2009 is one within the successful series of ECCOMASthematic events. XFEM 2009 is a medium-sized conferencewith a balanced participation covering both the theoreticalaspects of the subject and engineering applications.
