BUSINESS 101: Starting Your Business in 5 Steps12 VOL. I NO. 1Affiliates
Nota Bene: Caveat Emptor
1. SELF- ASSESSMENT Not all people are born with the skills to
become a great entrepre-neur but as Hilary Hin-
ton “Zig” Ziglar puts it, “you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” And there’s no better place to start your business than with yourself. Take time to reflect and identify your strengths and weaknesses for you to ef-fectively gauge your capabilities to start and manage a business. It is only by being absolutely honest with yourself can you realistically start something somewhere. “The truth hurts” and many people discover early in the process that they do not have the natural talents to start a business and most of them quit. It’s a good thing that entrepreneurship is not a talent but a specific set of skills which can be learned if given the time and passionfor it.In fact, the moment you have really decided to engage in business speaks a lot about your char-acter. So, if you find yourself in this situation, I suggest that you don’t quit.
Self-confidence is very important at this early stage that regardless of your background, present conditions, or cir-cumstances you are resolved to make the most of your strengths and at the same time work on your weaknesses because no one, not even yourself, can stand between you and your success.
2. INSPIRATION After assessing yourself and hav-
ing concluded that you now have what it takes to start your ‘enterprise’, I think you are now ready to deal with the obvi-ous: “What business?”You may start by decid-
ing whether you shall be selling or man-ufacturing a product, or that you shall be rendering a service, then identify what product or service that which you
would provide. It may even be some-thing that you love to do so much, like a hobby, a special talent, or a skill that you may teach. You may also look for a solution to a dilemma; in fact, most of our generation’s great start-ups were inspired by personal problems that they had to overcome like Facebook, Blurb, and Avigilon to name a few.
Inspiration is essential in this phase. You must be able to identify something that you are or you can be passionate about because before anyone can actu-ally believe in your business you must
first be convinced about it above anyone else.
3. BUSINESS PLAN Okay, you now have an idea, but
that’s just that. You need a business plan to make that idea into a reality and make the same work for your success. Many starting business owners don’t care to make a business plan or if they do some of them are not well prepared. Engaging in any business entails taking risks and a business plan is your due dil-igence in calculating these risks in order to overcome them or even put them to your advantage. You don’t need to have a business degree or high-technical know-how in order to make one for yourself. All you need is to describe on paper the nature of your business, your strategy to market and sell your product or service, the financial aspect of your business, and your projections of profit and loss.
In other words, you should be able to put on writing your ideas and how you will make these ideas real and work towards achieving your business goals. You don’t have to spend much nor should it be fancy; in fact, it should be as simple and as flexible as it can for you to review as your business moves forward. A business plan is simply what it is, ‘a plan,’ and it should be able to guide you and your business accordingly.
4 . CAPITAL Carelessly de-fined as ‘money or
asset used to create profit or income,’ capital is ac-tually more than that. There are different kinds of capital and money (or financial capital) is just one of them, other forms of capital are: natural capital, social capital, intellectual capital, and human capital.
You may raise funds for your busi-ness as necessary from your person-al savings, credit cards, loans from family members or from friends, etc.
However, in as much as financial capi-tal is important ‘money is not everything, nor is it the only thing.’ In fact, I have al-ways been a firm believer of intellectual and human capital that you may start your business with literally ‘zero monetary capital’ given a great business idea, right association, and a well-engineered plan.
5. OPERATIONS Having gone through all of
those above-mentioned there is nothing left for you to do but to ac-tually start your business operations.
There will come a time when every-thing is set and that you will feel some doubts or maybe a lingering feeling of inadequacy and this comes right be-fore you actually start the business. When that moment comes, identi-fy the feeling – FEAR. Fear is noth-ing more than an illusion, a pigment of your imagination, and something well within the ambit of your control.
It is important for you to have cour-age in this stage. According to Lt. John B. Putnam, Jr., “courage is not the lack of fear but the ability to face it.” You make that self-reminder into a set of clear and conscious actions and you’re on your way to great heights.
So, what are you waiting for? There will never be a tomorrow, the time is now!
