SOLEMNITY OF THE DEDICATION

H oly Rosary Cathedral was Dedicated on October 3rd,

by Archbishop Duke. Even though the church was completed in 1900, the church was only dedicated in 1953 because a church could not be dedicated until it was debt-free. Dedication means that it is something that is set apart for sacred use, in our case the church, set apart from secular use and given to God. For us as members of the Cathedral community it is a time to reflect on what it means to be a member of this parish. To reflect back on the heroic witness and hard work of those who labored to give us a beautiful church, but more importantly, who passed on the faith to us.

FEAST OF THE HOLY ROSARY

O n October 7, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. For us this is a special feast, since it is the patronal feast of the Cathedral, and thus also of the Archdiocese as the Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.

XXVI Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Therese Feast Day, October 1

St. Therese, Flower of fervor and love,

please intercede for us.

Fill our hearts with your pure love of God.

As we approach and celebrate your feast day,

make us more aware of the goodness of God and how well He tends His garden.

Instill in us your little way of doing

ordinary things with extra-ordinary love.

Give us the hearth of a child who wonders at life and

Embraces everything with loving enthusiasm. Teach us your delight in God’s ways

So that divine charity may blossom in our hearts.

Little Flower of Jesus, bring our petitions

(mention in silence here)

before God, our Father. With your confidence, we come before Jesus

as God's children,

because you are our heavenly friend.

As we celebrate the Feast Day of your

homecoming in heaven, continue to shower roses and grace upon us.

Amen

XXVI SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MASS READINGS

Responsorial Psalm 146 R. Praise the Lord, my soul.

Second Reading I Timothy 6, 11 - 6 Keep the commandments without stain or reproach .

Gospel Luke 16, 19 - 31 My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime .

Mass Reflection

The poor man and Lazarus.

In this Sunday's Gospel (Lk. 16, 19 - 31), Jesus tells the Parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus. The former lives in luxury and egoism and when he dies, he will go to hell. The poor man on the contrary eats the food left over from the table of the rich man, and at his death he will be brought by angels to his eternal dwelling place with God and the saints. "Blessed are you poor", the Lord proclaimed to his disciples, "for yours is the Kingdom of God" (Lk. 6, 20). But the message of the parable goes further. It reminds us that while we are in this world we should listen to the Lord who speaks through the Sacred Scriptures and to live according to his will, otherwise after death it will be too late to repent. This parable teaches us two lessons: the first is that God loves the poor and comforts their humiliation; the second is that our eternal destiny is conditioned by our attitude, it is up to us to follow the path that God has laid out for us in order to attain life and this path is love, not intended as a feeling but as service to others in the charity of Christ.
