Description:
Here meet the fourth of six entities accounted for in the final two chapters of John's Revelation. Truth to tell, Revelation merely hints at Israel's end-times story, for it is, after all, a book written to/for the churches. The full story of the Jews in the 70th Week traces an arc of suffering that begins with seeming peace and safety and ends with God's people seemingly on the brink of extinction. Nevertheless, as Paul says here and there: "But God . . . ! How God steps in to rescue and preserve His chosen people and how He turns their hearts to His Son as their Messiah should thrill every Christian. Gives me goosebumps!

XXXIII: JEWS IN THE 70TH

WEEK

In the end, at last, God’s chosen people call on Jesus as their Messiah

and He responds.

God’s Chosen People, the Jews, will respond to the punishing

adversity of the 70th Week by finally calling on Jesus as their

promised Messiah. Even with the promised outpouring of

the Holy Spirit on this people (Zech 12:10), only the horrors of

the Great Tribulation, only imminent extinction as a people,

suffice to force them to call out The Name!

The extent of their stubbornness, the extremity of their

suffering and the reach of God’s grace will be the focus of this

slide set.

HASN’T GOD FINISHED WITH THE JEWS ALREADY?

Didn’t Jesus curse the barren fig tree (Israel) in Matthew 21:19: “No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you?”

Page 9: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

HASN’T GOD FINISHED WITH THE JEWS ALREADY?

Didn’t Jesus weep over a forsaken Jerusalem, saying in Matthew 23:38: “Behold your house is being left to you desolate?”

Page 10: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

Yes, but . . . . .

Page 11: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

THE OLD TESTAMENT DECLARES GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

“If the heavens above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out below, Then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done.”Jeremiah 31:37 (All of chapters 30 and 31 expand and reinforce this unshakeable this promise!)

Page 12: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

PAUL IN THE NEW TESTAMENT DECLARES GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

“I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be . . . .God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew . . . . . . for the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable!”Romans 11:1, 2 and 29 (Remember Jer 30?)

“I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be . . . .God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew . . . . . . for the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable!”Romans 11:1, 2 and 29

And is there some obscure connotation to the iron-

hard word “irrevocable”

that leaves us in doubt as to how God wants us to

view His gifts and callings??

FOR ME, END-TIMES PROPHECY PROVIDES THE SINGLE

MOST COMPELLING REASON TO BELIEVE ALL GOD’S

PROMISES TO ABRAHAM AND ISRAEL REMAIN IN FORCE.

IN BOTH THE OLD AND THE NEW TESTAMENTS’

TREATMENTS OF CHRIST’S RETURN, ONE

CONSTANTLY ENCOUNTERS ISRAEL’S PRESENCE, HER TRIBULATION, HER TRIUMPH AND GOD’S

FAITHFULNESS TO HER.

CONSTANTLY!

ONLY WHEN JEWS EMBRACE JESUSDOES JESUS RETURNS TO EARTH

1. Jesus makes a Jewish national conversion a condition for His return. Matthew 23:39

2. The Holy Spirit enables Jews to meet the condition. Zech 12:10

3. Jews meet condition for His return. Zech 13:9

4. Jesus returns! Zech 14:3

Page 16: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

THE CONDITION FOR CHRIST’S RETURN

1. Jesus in Matt 23:39: “For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.”

GOD ENABLES JEWS TO SEE THE TRUTH2. Zech 12:10–”I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced (THAT’S JESUS!) and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son . . . .”

Page 17: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

JESUS FULFILLS HIS PROMISE TO RETURN

4. Zechariah 14:3: Then the Lord will go forth and fight

against those nations . . . His feet will stand on the Mount

of Olives . . .” JESUS RETURNS WHEN HIS

PEOPLE CALL HIS NAME!!

JEWS NOW MEET CHRIST’S CONDITION

3. Zechariah 13:9: And I will bring the third part through

the fire, refine them as silver is refined and test them as

gold is tested. They will call on My name and I will

answer them. I will say, ‘They are My people’ and they

will say, ‘The Lord is my God.”

Get set to look at the Jews of the 70th Week with two competing mindsets: Pessimism and Fear

VERSUSCourageous Steadfast Hope

And do not be dismayed, O Israel, for behold I will save you

from afar! Jer 30:10

JEWS IN THE 70TH WEEKMindset 1: The Case For Fear

Page 29: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act I: Establishing a Sense of False Security (1)

1. Seemingly Safe and Wealthy: Ezekiel 38: 8, 11+12

8: “Brought out from the nations living securely, all of them . . .”

11: “unwalled villages . . . at rest . . that live securely, all of them, without walls having no bars or gates . . .”

12: a people “who have acquired cattle and goods . . .” and (13) “silver and gold . . . cattle and goods” in quantities sufficient to excite Gog to a lust for plunder.

Page 30: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

Oh, Berean Christian, tighten your grip on The Word!

ALERT!!! The author of this piece inserts an element of his own understanding of scripture. Know that good and honest Christians hold other views of the matter.

Of what do I speak? I believe that Ezekiel 38 and 39 describe events that take place on the threshold of the 70th Week. I believe that these events establish the conditions under which the 70th Week will begin. Please know that I could MIS-understand how God intends us to respond to these two pivotal chapters. Be open to my response and seek out other contrary and honorable alternatives as you study further.

Page 31: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act I: Establishing a Sense of False Security (2)

2. Seemingly Back in God’s Favor: Ezekiel 39

3: God crushes the invader: “And I shall strike your bow from your left hand and dash down your arrows from your right hand.”

4: “You shall fall on the mountains of Israel . . . and I shall give you as food to every kind of predatory bird.”

Can we blame the Jews for thinking that God has saluted their righteousness even though they still reject Jesus as Christ? After all, He just rescued them miraculously from Gog!

Page 32: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act I: Establishing a Sense of False Security (3)

3. Seemingly Safe and Wealthy: Daniel 11: 21 + 24 (which I place after the events of Ezekiel 38 + 9)

11: The political figure who will, in 31/2 years, become the AntiChrist, initially “will come in a time of tranquility.” After Gog’s fall, peace once more!

24: “In a time of tranquility, he will enter the richest parts of the realm . . .” Notice the word ‘richest’: again, a reference to wealth Israelis have accumulated just prior to the 70th Week.

Page 33: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act I: Establishing a Sense of False Security (4)

4. Beguiled and Befriended: Daniel 9: 27, 11: 23

9:27–”And he (soon to be AntiChrist) will make a firm covenant with the many . . .” to begin the 70th Week.

11:23– “And after an alliance is made with him (the soon to be AntiChrist . . .”

What content or assurances does this covenant contain? Is this the ‘holy covenant’ of Daniel 11:30 against which the AntiChrist rages? Nonetheless, a friendly relationship starts the 70th Week with the appearance of a friendly new foreign collaborator.

Page 34: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act II: Betrayed (1)

1. Betrayed: Daniel 11: 23, 31

11:23– “And after an alliance is made with him, he (the soon to be AntiChrist) will practice deception . . .”

11:31– “And forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress and do away with the regular sacrifice . . . set up abomination of desolation”

AntiChrist, resurrected and enraged, turns on the Jews, his erstwhile friends and colleagues of covenant.

Page 35: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act III: Assaulted (1)

1. Assaulted: Daniel 11: 32, 34; 12:1

11:32– “And by smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly towards the covenant . . .”

11:33– “. . .they (godly Jews) will fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder. . .”

12:1– “And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time . . .”

Page 36: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act III: Assaulted (2)

2. Assaulted: Revelation 12

12:13– “And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth. he persecuted the woman (Israel) who had given birth to the male Child (Jesus) . . .”

12:15– “And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. . .”

Daniel 11:22– “And the overflowing forces will be flooded away before him . . .” I wonder if these ‘floods’ are in anyway related? Just asking!

Page 37: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

TRACING AN ARC OF SUFFERING:Act IV: Pressed to Extinction

1. Crushed: Zechariah 14:1– “I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and . . .

the city will be captured

houses plundered

women ravished

half the city exiled

2. Ripped: 13:8– “And it will come about in all the land . . . that two parts (2/3) in it will be cut off and perish . . .”

Page 38: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

Oh, Berean Christian, tighten your grip on The Word!

Does a negligent God seem heartless? See how He allows Satan to press His people to the very brink of extinction . . . to the very precipice of doom! Heartless?

No. God yearns to rescue. Prophecy declares God’s rescue, its details, its sequence, its glory and its good effect. But first, first, a stubborn, proud and rebellious people must repent, must ‘call on My Name’ and say, ‘Jesus is our Messiah!” God must wait for that moment, suffer with them, but wait. Jesus says: “You shall not see Me until you say, “Blessed is He (Jesus) who comes in the Name of the Lord.” Matt 23:39

Page 40: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

GOD HAS TOLD HIS PEOPLE EVERYTHING IN ADVANCE.

Amos 3:7–”Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets.”

Almost every OT book warns the Jews about the folly of disobedience and faithlessness to the covenant they made under Moses with God.

Reams of prophetic material exist that spell out Israel’s role in the end times.

Daniel 11:33 promises ‘people with insight who will give understanding to the many’. They use this information to guide those who listen.

Page 41: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

ISRAEL PURGED OF INIQUITY.

Ezekiel 22:15– “And I shall scatter you among the nations and I shall disperse you through the lands and I shall consume your uncleanness from you.

Isaiah 27:9– “Therefore through this (Jewish banishment) Jacob’s iniquity will be forgiven.”

Daniel 11:35– “And some of those who have insight will fall in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time, because it is still to come at the appointed time.”

Page 42: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

GOD PROTECTS AND AIDS HIS PEOPLE

Rev 12:6– “And the woman (Israel) fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that she might be nourished for 1260 days.”

Rev 12:16– “And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth.”

Zechariah 12-14– Describes how God arouses, empowers and directs first Judah and then Jerusalem itself into supernatural acts of military heroism against those who would plunder them.

Page 43: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

GOD ENCOURAGES HIS PEOPLE

Daniel 11:32– “. . . but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.”

Daniel 11:33– “And those who have insight will give understanding to the many: yet many will fall by the sword . . .”

Daniel 11:34– “Now when they fall they will be granted a little help and many will join them in hypocrisy.” (An aside: the last phrase makes little sense to me. I even suspect a misreading of the original. But what do I know?)

Page 44: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

GOD RESCUES A REMNANT.

Zechariah 13:8– “. . . two thirds in it will be cut off and perish but the third will be left in it. And I will bring the third part through the fire to refine them as silver is refined.”

Zechariah 14:3– “Then the Lord will go forth . . . and in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives on the east, and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley . . . and you will flee by this valley (from Jerusalem).

Page 45: XXXI Jews In The 70th Week

8. ‘And it shall come about on that day,’ declares the Lord of hosts, ‘that I will break his yoke from off their neck and will tear off their bonds and strangers shall no longer make them slaves. But they shall serve the Lord their God and David their king whom I will raise up for them.’10. ‘And fear not, O Jacob, My servant,’ declares the Lord, ‘and do not be dismayed, O Israel, for behold, I will save you from afar and your offspring from the land of their captivity. And Jacob shall return and be quiet and at ease.’ Jeremiah 30: 8 + 10

AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO FAITH FOR CHRISTIANS

God promised to return Israel to the land. In 1948 we saw–with our own natural eyes!– evidence of God’s faithfulness.

Seeing such evidence, can we doubt that God keeps all His promises-to us for salvation, to His people for redemption and restoration?

God unfolds His plan in the 70th Week of Jewish history.

Christians mark time–God’s time, by watching Israel’s development.

God’s redemptive plan for both groups unfolds amidst the horrors of their 70th Week.

A MATTER OF OBEDIENCE

A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in and thus all Israel shall be saved.

From the standpoint of God’s choice, they are beloved . . . for the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable! Rom 11:25+6
