Within the Pirelli Group, there are manufacturingfacilities dedicated to the production of HV cables and accessoriessystems in 12 countries in all five continents and a single business unit, which gathers all critical functionsin a co-ordinated management structure with common operative policies. STANDARDS andRECOMMENDATIONS

National and international standards provide design guidelines for High Voltage cables,however most HV cable systems are custom designed to suit also the specificenvironmental parameters and operating requirements of a particular route and loadingconditions, taking into account the thermal, thermo-mechanical, electrical and hydraulicperformance necessary to ensure reliable system operation throughout service life, whichnaturally will vary considerable between different applications and locations.Pirelli products are designed to meet the projected service duty and to comply withnational and international testing requirements. Type approval references are given againsteach product type available.Besides, international scientific bodies – like IEC and Cigré – develop relevant standards,technical recommendations and guidelines within their activities in the field of High Voltage. Pirellirelies on a long-standing tradition of participation and on a strong presence within such bodies,acquired thanks to its undisputed expertise developed over scores of projects accomplished anywherein the world.

The smooth welded aluminium sheath consists of an aluminium tapelongitudinally applied and welded and firmly bonded to the outer PEsheath. The result is a solid impervious water barrier, with an excellentresistance to fatigue strain.Tape application and welding and following PE extrusion are carried outthrough a tandem process on the same line, which undergoes continuousvideo recorded inspection for quality assurance purposes. The resultingwater-tightness and resistance to corrosion have been proven withextensive tests, complying with the most stringent relevant standards.Depending on the short circuit requirements, the welded aluminiumsheath can be complemented with copper wires.

Metallic sheath plays a key role in the design of High Voltage and Extra HighVoltage underground cable systems, as it must satisfy essential electricaland mechanical functions to ensure the correct operation of cables.Cables with lead alloy sheath - the first solution adopted in thedevelopment of metallic shielding technologies - provide all necessaryguarantees in terms of technical characteristics: mechanical protection,fluid and moisture tightness and short circuit currents carrying capability.One of the main disadvantages of cables with lead sheath, especially asfar as installation implications are concerned, is weight and, in somespecific cases, fatigue.Cables with Corrugated Aluminium Sheath (CAS) - the first lead substitutiontechnique adopted in the evolution of metallic shielding technology – havea significantly reduced weight vs. cables with lead sheath.On the other hand, CAS cables have the disadvantage of a lowertransmission capacity - due to the presence of an air gap under theshield - and of a larger diameter, thus resulting in shorter cable lengthson drum and related impact on installation.Recently, Pirelli know-how and technological competence have led to abreakthrough innovation, with the development of a solution, whicheffectively combines the benefits of both lead and corrugated aluminiumsheath and minimises their disadvantages, thus obtaining a cable with lighterweight, reduced diameter and bending radius, and longer lengths on drum.Cables with smooth welded aluminium sheath also guarantee excellentelectrical and mechanical performance, full fluid tightness andcompliance with even the strictest environmental requirements.
