PREPARING FOR WORSHIP
Read Psalm 2. How is God’s kingdom different than our earthly governments? How is King Jesus different than our earthly rulers? Take some time to consider the differences and give thanks for our heavenly King.

THE NURSERY is not staffed but is available for parents who have young children who become noisy or restless during the service. We are thankful for families who teach their children to worship by bringing them to church. When your little ones become noisy, feel free to take them to the narthex or the nursery to settle them down. The service can be seen and heard on TV in both locations.
THE ORDER OF SERVICEPRELUDE: Ellacombe … J. Wayne Kerr

COLLECT:P: Let us pray.
Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
HOLY GOSPEL: John 12:12-19P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter.C: Glory to You, O Lord.
The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They kept shouting: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord -- the King of Israel! " Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written: Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt. His disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify. This is also why the crowd met him, because they heard he had done this sign. Then the Pharisees said to one another, "You see? You've accomplished nothing. Look, the world has gone after him! "
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You, O Christ.

SAINT JAMES CHOIR: Lift Up Your Heads … Martin/Paige
OLD TESTAMENT READING: Zechariah 9:9-12Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem. The bow of war will be removed, and he will proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion will extend from sea to sea, from

SAINT JAMES CHOIR: Hosanna ... Craig Courtney
EPISTLE: Philippians 2:5-11Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death -- even to death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow -- in heaven and on earth and under the earth -- and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

HYMN OF THE DAY: LSB 444 No Tramp of Soldiers’ Marching Feet
Jesus, our King, came humbly to die for us to save us out of love for us. Because love is the center of God’s kingdom, and this obedience exemplified love, Jesus is lifted up to be honored above all.
Children are invited to the front of the church for the introduction of the sermon.

SERMON:Text: Zechariah 9:9-12Title: What Good Is a Gentle King?
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTIONP: We come before our King in confession, seeking His peace.C: Holy Lord, I find myself in a prison of my own making again and
again. I have sinned against You and create conflict when You bring only peace. For the sake of Your Son, forgive my sin. Answer me, for You alone are my salvation.
P: Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion. Look, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt. Our Lord Jesus Christ emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death -- even to death on a cross. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord -- the King of Israel!
