inTroDuctionThe Dorset Farmers’ Markets, Dorset Food & Drink & the Duchy of Cornwall are delighted to be working together again for this fifth annual Dorset Food & Arts Festival.
The 2016 committee are pleased to welcome our guest opener, Annabel Elliot, interior designer and founder of Annabel Elliot Interior based in Dorset. The new Public House and Inn in Queen Mother Square is named in honour of her sister, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.
As you enjoy the 2016 Festival, you will see that progress is continuing on Queen Mother Square, now home to many thriving businesses.
Whilst the main focal point of the Square will be a cast bronze statue of the late Queen Mother by renowned sculptor Philip Jackson, the west side sees the newly extended Waitrose together with the pannier building known as Jubilee Hall. This incorporates the cast iron columns salvaged by the Duchy of Cornwall when the original Jubilee Hall in Weymouth was demolished in 2006. Today it is hosting the Weldmar Cream Teas.
To the north will be the most prominent building in Poundbury, Royal Pavilion, a classical building of 20 luxury apartments, designed by one of our gold sponsors, Ben Pentreath of Working Group Architects.
The new Hall & Woodhouse ‘Duchess of Cornwall Inn’, which includes a 20 bedroom hotel as well as restaurant facilities & traditional public house offerings, is nearly complete and today you are invited to ‘Pull a Pint with the Landlord’.
Strathmore House to the East is where you can take the opportunity to visit the Dorset Wine Company’s fizz bar selling Prosecco, Champagne and a local sparkling wine by the glass.
Bowes Lyon Court, the McCarthy & Stone development which fronts Peverell Avenue East, is nearing completion of the 62 one and two bedroom assisted living apartments exclusively for the over 70s.
In addition to Weldmar Hospicecare Trust, for which the festival has over the last four years raised a total of £12,500, this years’ event will donate to the Steve Charles Help A Friend charity and Cheeky Monkeys Playgroup.
Ultimately, the festival is a ‘great day out’ and a great way to support local artisan food & drink producers, Dorset farmers, Dorset musicians & local charities, so please dig deep and make the 2016 Festival the best one yet!

Come & join usThis year the children’s tent will be hosting a special crown-making workshop to celebrate the year of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. Families are invited to join us to take part in the crafts, have refreshments, get your hands dirty planting flowers to take home or get a beautiful glitter tattoo.
We are lucky enough to have the tent run by local volunteers from the Poundbury playgroup Cheeky Monkeys.
In addition this year the popular children’s author Dougal Jerram of Victor The Volcano will be making a special appearance for readings and book signings. Times for this will be advertised on the day. He will then go on for more book signings and reading sessions at our sponsor Boo’s Toy Shop, a traditional and quirky toy shop just down from the square in the Buttermarket.

Dorset Shellfish is one of our favourite stallholders and we’re pleased to say they have been with us since the very first festival. It is a brilliant local business made up of Caroline Drever and her daughter Stef, who run the business. Every day her partner Graham is out of their Marauder WH22 out of Weymouth catching their lobsters, crabs and fish with his son Karl.
Caroline says she loves returning to the festival every year because it is lovely to see people so interested in their business and it’s ‘one of the best free foodie events’ in Dorset.
They are proud to fish sustainably, which means that anything not large enough to land or the wrong species is returned to the sea unharmed.
Check out their stall today to see the vibrancy and passion behind their business. Our tip is to try the dressed crab or lobster salad.

alongside The London Office.
Symonds & Sampson queen mother squareIf you come to Poundbury every year for the festival you will notice a dramatic difference this autumn. As well as the completion of Strathmore House, the building of the new Duchess of Cornwall Inn and Royal Pavilion, this year we will see the official launch of Queen Mother Square with the grand unveiling of an iconic statue to commemorate the Queen Mother.
The Duchess of Cornwall Inn, a joint venture between The Duchy of Cornwall and Hall & Woodhouse, will also be opening this Autumn on the corner of the square. The striking square was designed by Quinlan and Francis Terry and Working Group Architects, whose brief from the masterplanner Leon Krier was to design a classical square at the heart of the development.
To the north of the square Royal Pavilion is a classical building, which when completed, will have 20 luxury apartments and a health spa on the ground floor, complete with swimming pool and gym Above the stone archway will be two apartments – the Penthouse and the Bell Tower. This will be the highest point in Poundbury. The quintessentially European feel of the square was inspired by bustling squares on the continent.
To the East side of the square, Strathmore House, comprises of eight spacious apartments and two retail premises. The final building is the £21 million retirement
complex by McCarthy & Stone, which opened this summer as its flagship development. Bowes Lyon Court is named after the Queen Mother’s maiden name.
There are lots of thriving local businesses based in and around the square. There are three unique cafés, an artisan butcher as well as a newly extended Waitrose for grocery shopping. The square hosts the monthly farmers’ market on the first Saturday of each month.
Queen Mother StatueThe main focal point of the square will be the cast bronze statue of the late Queen Mother by internationally renowned sculptor Philip Jackson.
The 9’6’’ tall Poundbury statue is scheduled to be unveiled this Autumn. It is the exact casting of the Queen Mother’s statue standing in The Mall, which was unveiled in 2009 by Her Majesty The Queen.

The charitieSOver four years, we are proud to say the festival has raised £12,500 for the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and other local charities. This year we are primarily raising money for Weldmar and also two other local groups – the Steve Charles Help a Friend Fund and local Poundbury playgroup Cheeky Monkeys – who kindly run our children’s tent every year.
Weldmar events fundraiser Katie Slade, who is also a member of the Festival Committee, says: “We are delighted once again to be working with the Dorset Food and Arts Festival Committee. This is always a fantastic event and we very much look forward to welcoming visitors to enjoy one of our cream teas this year. Thanks so much to the organising committee and the many sponsors that support this annual spectacle of food and arts.”

abOut weldMaRWeldmar Hospicecare is a charity for patients with cancer and other progressive conditions, such as motor neurone disease, who require specialist help. Patients in north, south and west Dorset have a seamless service, whether they require care and advice in the comfort of their own homes, in the Wellbeing Centres or the inpatient unit at Joseph Weld Hospice.
The charity’s compassionate approach supports patients and their families, medically and in other ways, in the community, in the hospice and at home. The staff take time to focus on what matters to each patient and their family. Each year they support over a thousand people living with the effects of life-limiting illnesses.
Weldmar employs nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers, counsellors and a chaplain who work in patients’ homes, the hospice and the community, supported by trained volunteers. The NHS contribute 32% of the clinical costs leaving Weldmar needing to raise £10,240 per day to fund our free of charge services through fundraising and a chain of twenty charity shops and four outlets.
