CheCkinginNews from around the Birmingham YMCA

During our 2011 Strong Kids & Communities Annual Support Campaign, 634 volunteers worked harder than ever to help others understand the critical importance of the YMCA’s charitable mission: that no deserving person is ever turned away due to inability to pay.

Year to date, gifts from 2,545 generous donors have helped our 13 branches raise $700,000 so we’ll be able to provide financial assistance to over 10,000 neighbors throughout Birmingham participate in:• Afterschool Care • Swimming Lessons • Youth Sports • Summer and Holiday Day Camp• YMCA Camp Cosby summer resident Camp & Outdoor Environmental Education• Team building and bonding at YMCA Hargis Retreat• YMCA memberships so adults can stay healthy

even in challenging economic times• Healthy snacks to every area YMCA Afterschool program participantSpecial thanks to these 2011 Campaign Volunteers who have gone the “extra mile” to share our YMCA stories with others:

1. Discipline & RespectThere is perhaps no better sport a young person can play that helps develop discipline and respect than swimming. The time commitment alone to become a good competitive swimmer is enough to instill self-discipline in most children. The amount of time a swimmer spends in the water can turn many athletes into professionals in other sports.

2. Self-RelianceAlthough individual athletes are part of a team, swimming

really is an individual sport. Athletes in swimming learn a lot about self-reliance and listening to constructive

criticism as a way to improve. Even though there is another swimmer in the lane next to you, swimmer’s really compete with themselves and work hard to improve their own time and technique. Even if they don't come in first place in a race, if they have improved since the last meet, then they are successful!

3. Sport of a LifetimeI was a soccer player and was trying out for a professional team when I blew out my knee. After I came home, I used the pool to continue exercising while me knee healed. The low-impact nature of the water makes swimming great for anyone because it is

so easy on the joints and also means that you can enjoy the sports for a longer period of

time than other more high-impact sports.

Participants in the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (YDPP) were treated to a tasty surprise as Community Health Initiatives specialist Caroline Bundy led a cooking demonstra-tion at the Youth Center.

Caroline prepared two meals during her demo to give partici-pants in YDPP examples of how to create healthy meals quickly and easily. The first was a one-dish recipe of chicken with white beans and tomatoes packed with loads of protein. The second was a whole wheat pasta with mixed vegetables, a healthier departure from the normal, starchy white pasta.

“It’s loaded with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals,” said Caroline. “It’s great as leftovers and can be served hot or cold.”

To learn more about the YDPP, contact Debby LaCruz, Diabetes Prevention Specialist, at [email protected].

i LearneD iT aT CamPThe summer to discover is just a few weeks away, but as we are getting ready to welcome children to our branches and facilities, we took a step back, to previous summers, and asked campers, their parents, and counselors what they learned at camp. A whole year’s worth of education, it seems, when you read their responses here.

So this summer, like every one that came before, when you and your children choose a camping experience at the YMCA of Birmingham, you are participating in a camping program you can count on, not just for good supervision and safety, but for personal growth.

We work hard to select leaders who will be positive adult role models and who have demonstrated responsibility, maturity, and reliability. Our attention to safety and the campers' health has

resulted in a safety record that any organization would be delighted to match. Beyond safety and good supervision, the YMCA believes that special, positive, and growth-filled opportunities await every child who attends Y camp.

From traditional day camps to time-specific specialty camps, to field trips and overnight adventures, there is a YMCA camp for every child, and every interest, whether they are 6 or 16.

Brochures with complete information and scheduling are available at your neighborhood branch or facility, or go to the new ymcabham.org and click on your branch, Camp Cosby or Hargis Retreat to see the programs, dates, and times. Plus: you can register online!

We look forward to providing a quality camp experience for your family.

Collaborating with national estate planning firm Thompson & Associates, the YMCA of Birmingham is offering free consulting services to help you reduce taxes, possibly increase your income, provide an appropriate inheritance for your family and contribute to the charities you passionately support. Thompson’s values-based approach focuses on helping individuals redirect their “social capital,” or money that would otherwise go to the government in the form of taxes.

Board of Trustees Chair Ann Huckstep encourages this opportunity. “Whether or not you have an estate plan in place, Thompson can offer ways to reduce tax lia-bilities and thus increase the amount in your estate available for gifts”.

Thompson’s services are provided:• through an unbiased third party,• at no charge to you,• with complete confidentiality,• using a thoughtful, values-based process that focuses on your objectives,• on your schedule, and• no competition with your existing advisors.

Whether you would like to discuss a specific estate planning issue, have your current plan reviewed, or create a new plan, this new ser-vice could benefit you and your family. To take advantage of this opportunity, please call Leigh Laser Collins at 801-6053.

”I like that the counselors give us a choice of what we want to do. They don’t force us to do something we don’t want to do, but they encourage us to do things like dodgeball. You never think you’ll have fun playing dodgeball as a girl.”

”we get to go on field trips every week, get to go swimming every day, and get to stay outside. we get to go to Oak Mountain a lot and to the movies and we get to hang out with the counselors more during summer camp than we do during day camp.”

”I like that all my friends go here. I’ve made friends at other schools that I normally don’t get to see. I see them at Summer Camp.”
