Welcome to the annual Union Awards which celebrates you and all your amazing achievements. Tonight is a chance for your Union to say thank you for all your hard work and a chance to celebrate all the great things you have accomplished.
You will hear tonight about committed and amazing Befrienders, Campaigners both for
causes and the elections, Course Reps, Green Ladder, Media, School Presidents, Societies
and Student Employees. We’ll also tell you more about those who have been nominated for
the Union Volunteer of the Year 2015.
Of course tonight is also a celebration of the year that has been, and we will be regularly
showing your photos and memories from the year on the big screens in 53 Degrees.
We will also formally recognise and thank our committed volunteers who have taken part
in the Livesey Award. Just from those who have logged hours we have over 7000 hours
committed to volunteering to make life better for other students which is worth in financial
terms over £45,000!
Finally a massive thank you from me andthe rest of the Student Affairs Committee.

NomineesAll nominations came from current students and were decided on by students,led by members of the Student Affairs Committee. Each award has with much
consideration been cut down to a final shortlist. Here are the reasons why eachof the following has been shortlisted.
Academic RepresentationCourse Rep of the YearDorine Aileen De-haan
Reason for nomination: Dorine is nominated for exceeding expectations as a rep,
as well as being a friend and advocate for her course mates.
Lisa MoenchReason for nomination: Lisa is described as being hard working and kind in her role.
Ever reliable and determined Lisa is described as friendly and giving good feedback to
her those on her course.
Stevie WalmslyReason for nomination: Stevie is described as being a great help and support engaging
with students and offering exceptional feedback at SSLC meetings.
Keeley WhiteheadReason for nomination:Keeley is noted for her dedication and for speaking on behalf of the majority
of the course as well as listening to what those she represents have to say.
School President of the year
Abbie BartlettReason for nomination: Abbie is praised in her nominations for standing up for students,
commitment to the role, going out of her way to resolve issues and being passionate
about giving students a voice in their school.
Giulia CanigianiReason for nomination: Giulia is described in her nominations as being caring and conscientious.
Additionally she is praised for going out of her way to resolve any issues and alsofor her work ethic.
Alinur Miah Reason for nomination: Ali is nominated for his dedication to representing students and support for
Course Reps within the school. He is praised for securing quiet rooms on campus for Pharmacy
students, negotiating with lecturers to move a problematic essay deadline and his
level of consultation with students.
Jo SchumacherReason for nomination: Jo is commended for her enthusiasm, support for other
students and approachability as well as going out of her way to resolve any feedback
given to her by students in her school.
BefriendingBefriender of the year
Sitikon CharoenkajonkulReason for nomination: Sitikon has been nominated for being very friendly and engaging.
He always puts the welfare of others first and has been involved in the drop in sessions for Befriending.
Alex EllisonReason for nomination: Alex is noted for supporting several befriendees throughout the year
and helping out at sessions across the year.
Hayley RobsonReason for nomination: Hayley has received nominations for being very involved in drop in
sessions and from time to time leading them.
Campaigning / Elections Most Innovative Election Campaign
Abbie Bartlett, Daniel Pye, Tom Townsend and Laura HeywoodReason for nomination: Abbie and her election team Daniel, Tom and Laura are nominated for their
fun election campaign, their campaign video which was described as innovative and their perseverance.
Tom DalyReason for nomination: Tom is commended for working so hard in his election campaign,
his enthusiasm and his approach to speaking and listening to students about what
they wanted throughout the campaign.
Joshua EkoyoReason for nomination: Joshua is nominated for his hard work during the campaign having
been a student for only two months previously at UCLan.
Rob MicklethwaiteReason for nomination: Rob’s nominations note him as campaigning and consulting with International
students throughout the campaign period and making a funny and original campaigns video.
Campaign for Change AwardMarrow – Debbie O’Connor and Gracie Donoghue
Reason for nomination: The Bone Marrow campaign is nominated for being a new project that has run
events and educated students on how donating Bone Marrow can save lives.
Give Blood – Naomi McLellan-EdwardsReason for nomination: The Give Blood Campaign is nominated for successfully
bringing back on campus blood donation days for the first time in six years
through lobbying and partnership with the NHS.
Student Carers – Rachelle CohenReason for nomination:The Student Carers campaign is nominated for Rachelle’s
persistence in tackling issues around student carers and the research undertaken with
current UCLan student carers and university staff.
Multi-Faith Centre – Sana IqbalReason for nomination: The Multi-Faith Centre, & Sana in particular are commended for their campaigning
and lobbying to have a new Multi-Faith centre as part of the university master plan. They have done this
through raising faith at the university meetings, making others aware of the issues around the need for a
fit for purpose Multi-Faith centre and encouraging those of faith to play an active part in campaigning.
Campaign Activist of the YearRachelle Cohen
Reason for nomination: Rachelle is commended in her nomination for her work on student carers and
commitment to finding out the needs of existing student carers on campus.
Rob MicklethwaiteReason for nomination: Rob is nominated for his campaigning particularly with
International students during the election.
Sana IqbalReason for nomination: Sana is nominated for her campaigning around the Multi-Faith Centre
and working with the university to ensure it is included in the master plan.
Emili PeakeReason for nomination: Emili is nominated for her work for International Women’s Day
which included running stands and events to promote the day.
Green Ladder ProjectBest Student-led Sustainability Project Award
Re-cycle Music Night – Jack Hodges and Mark Grundy Reason for nomination: Re-cycle music night was described in one of its nominations as amazing.
Praised for the hard work of the organisers, the event drew attention to issues around fossil
fuels by using bicycles to power a live gig in Source Bar.
Sustainable Soup 4U – Naomi McLellan-EdwardsReason for nomination: Students received during Green Week a number of recipe cards to make
their own soup and could purchase soup with recyclable containers from the Atrium as part of the
project to provide sustainable soup to students and staff alike.
Green Ladder Volunteer of the YearAanchal Nejhavan
Reason for nomination: Aanchal is nominated for commitment to the projects on the Green Ladder
programme and has committed a significant number of hours to volunteering.
Suruchi PradhanReason for nomination: Suruchi is praised for regularly attending events and going the extra
mile ot get involved in projects as part of the Green Ladder programme.
SocietiesBest Society Event
LGBT – Trans Awareness EventReason for nomination: The Trans Awareness Event was praised for raising
some of the issues that Trans people face.
Japanese – Japan DayReason for nomination: Japan Day was praised for the hard work of the committee and
the different activities that took place over the day.
Poker – Charity Week Reason for nomination: The Poker Society Charity Week was praised for raising over £1000 and
including a range of large and small events including Casino nights and Poker for beginners.
Best New SocietyOracle
Reason for nomination: The Oracle Society was commended for featuring on the Telegraph website
and Radio 4 with its coverage of how to vote in the General Election as well as work on the
Union Elections promotion with both activities encouraging students to take an active interest
in Union and National elections.
Dig Deep Reason for nomination: The Dig Deep Society was nominated for having only started two months ago.
Then they are already planning a Mount Kenya fundraising walk which they have practiced locally
for twice with volunteers recruited. They have also held a series of further fundraising events
including quiz nights and bag packing.
Paranormal Reason for nomination: Paranormal Society has been described its nomination as being the first of its
kind. It’s gained a good number of members and has held a number of events both on and off campus
to keep members engaged.
Marrow Reason for nomination: Marrow Society is nominated for its raising awareness of blood cancer and
supporting the Anthony Nolan Fund to encourage potential donors from UCLan.
Society of the YearIslamic
Reason for nomination: Islamic Society was nominated for exceeding expectations by holding a
number of events throughout the year including Discover Islam week and friends of Palestine.
Japanese Reason for nomination: Japanese Society was commended in its nominations for doubling its
membership of the group, providing a safe environment and consistently holding brilliant events
Pharmacy Reason for nomination: Pharmacy Society was nominated for consistently providing amazing
opportunities for everyone on the course and running charity and social events throughout the year.
PhysicsReason for nomination: Physics Society has been praised for its increase in membership, organising
two charity events which raised over £4000 as well as countless events and Physics related seminars.
Pole FitnessReason for nomination: Pole Fitness were commended in their nominations for being welcoming,
bringing people out of their shell and always going the extra mile.
Student MediaMedia Platform of the Year
FrequencyReason for nomination: Frequency Radio is nominated for delivering a professional, nurturing and
confident atmosphere with both informative and entertaining programmes.
PlutoReason for nomination: Pluto is praised for its circulation and breaking some important stories over
the academic year. Additionally it is praised for the dedication of all its volunteers.
PSTVReason for nomination: PSTV are nominated for hosting the National Student Television
Awards as well as covering a number of important on campus events as well as supporting new
students who have got involved with the platform.
Media Contribution of the YearThe Week in Review (i.e Frequency News Show)
Reason for nomination: The show was praised for being the first show of its kind on Frequency, being
both informative and entertaining, and sparking a number of debates about the student community.
VS. MusicReason for nomination: The VS. Music is nominated for being one of the new studio shows
and focused on musical talents. They are particularly noted for taking an idea of a new
Foundation year student and turning into a reality.
Frequency’s 48 Hour BroadcastReason for nomination: The 48 Hour broadcast was noted for managing to raise over £600
for Red Nose Day with volunteers across the station coming together to deliver
non-stop live shows for two days.
Sounds of the showsReason for nomination: The brand new show is praised for providing entertainment week in
and week out with a compilation of both well-known and obscure music and a great deal
of research in advance of each program.
Media Volunteer of the year Emmi Bowles
Reason for nomination: Emmi in her nominations is praised for her hard work and dedication
for Pluto, taking on a number of different roles successfully and committing a great deal of
her spare time to volunteering in student media.
Izaac ColeReason for nomination: Izaac is nominated for working extremely hard and encouraging other students
to get involved in his radio show. He’s praised for his friendly manner in his work for student media.
Samuel LilesReason for nomination: Samuel is nominated for being an asset to PSTV and student media in its
entirety. Samuel is noted for taking on a number of roles and participating in both the technical
and content elements of running PSTV.
Peter Samuel HarperReason for nomination: Peter is noted in his nominations for being dedicated and committing a lot of hard
work to his roles within PSTV and leading a strong team of volunteers as part of his own volunteering.
UCLan Students’ Union Volunteer of the YearGracie Donoghue
Reason for nomination: Gracie is nominated for giving up a great deal of her time to volunteer
in a number of different volunteering roles including S.H.A.G week, UCLan Marrow,
Chlamydia Screening project, fundraising and as a Course Rep.
James HofstetterReason for nomination: James is nominated for committing to volunteering on S.H.A.G week, being
heavily involved in the elections and helping decorate the Union for a Christmas event for students
who stayed on campus over the festive break.
Sana IqbalReason for nomination: Sana is commended in her nomination for working hard all year to make life
better for students. Particularly she is noted for securing quiet spaces across campus for students and
for her enthusiasm and going the extra mile for students.
Emili PeakeReason for nomination: Emili is praised in nominations for her committed work as Women’s Rep on
Students’ Council, leading UCLan Pole Fitness as well as volunteering for events such as the Anthony
Nolan Bone Marrow Group. In one nomination she is described as an inspiration to students at UCLan.
Hayley RobsonReason for nomination: Hayley is nominated for her volunteering in political and
campaigning societies, being a Befriender for the past two years and for a sustained
commitment to volunteering whilst at university.
Tasneem VahedReason for nomination: Tasneem is praised for her determination and described as an inspiration.
She has run a number of campaigns and events and led a successful society for the past year.
All Nominees for the UCLan Students’ Union Volunteer of the Year will be recognised today with the
winner being announced at the University Volunteering Awards on Friday 15th May.
