March Team Mate Spotlight Our spotlight shines this month on Rich McGovern, Wesleyan’s new Sous
Chef, who joined us December 16, 2019. Rich defines sous chef as the head
chef’s right hand. We can be assured that Rich is well prepared to serve
quality and flavor for our dining experience.
Rich and his wife Laura celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary in
February. They are very proud of their family that includes three children:
16-year- old Alicyn, 11-year- old Jaxon, and 3-year- old Cannon.
Originally from Colorado, Rich came to Texas in 1985. Before he came to
The Wesleyan, he served as chef in the Austin area at Bon Appetite, Pizza
Deli Sauté, Mongolian Grill, and American Bistro. His early chef experience
in this area prepared him well, and it’s easy to understand why our Wesley-
an family is excited to welcome Rich McGovern. As our visit came to a close,
Rich commented on how nice and friendly the residents and staff are.
He especially enjoys chit-chatting in the dining room with the residents.

Nuclear Weapons Issues and Negotiations Since
1945 /HCR
Questions to consider : Why the Manhattan Project at
Los Alamos, New Mexico? How did the scientists
respond after the first test at Trinity Site in New Mexico?
Was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
necessary? What were some of the largest tests of
nuclear weapons? How many nuclear weapons are there
today and who has them? Is the fact that there are fewer
nukes now than in the past important? (tricky)
According to studies by the Foreign Policy Association,
there have been five nuclear races. The fifth is ongoing
and is extremely important. How many nuclear
weapons would it take to destroy nearly all life on earth?
Not a pleasant thought, but a necessary one as research
on new and “more effective” weapons is taking place
throughout the world. What are the possibilities of
destroying all nuclear weapons and having a nuclear
free world except for uses in power production, medical
research and treatments? What are some of the options
for alternative nuclear futures? Such as: a nuclear
weapons ban, a deterrence only posture (all weapons on
a stand-down status), modernize nuclear weapons and
use continued international negotiations, destroy all
existing nuclear weapons and provide ongoing U.N.
inspections for compliance. Others?

and emotional changes in the body. Nothing works
faster or more dependably to bring your mind and
body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor
lightens your burdens, inspires hope, connects you
to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and
alert. It also helps you release anger and forgive
sooner. We hope you can join two nurses bringing

“For since we are permanently grafted into him to experience a death like his, then we are
permanently grafted into him to experience a resurrection like his and the new life that it imparts.”
Romans 6:5 TPT
Ahh, SPRING. I love the idea of spring – trees budding, birds chirping, flowers springing up in the
yard. The contrast between winter and spring here in Texas isn’t as great as it is in the North where
I’m from. In Central New York, I couldn’t wait for the first signs of spring: red-breasted robins,
crocuses breaking through the snow. It meant that the long, dark and dreary, cold, snowy months
were coming to an end and giving way to the new life of SPRING.
Oh, I remember how I excited I was when I saw those first little purple blossoms springing up in my
front yard. Now those pretty little flowers didn’t just happen to be there. Before I could be blessed
with those early signs of spring, I had to do some work. There was a time of preparation.
Before we can truly experience the fullness of the new life of Resurrection Sunday, we have to
prepare for it. We have to prepare our hearts, our souls, and our minds for it through reflection and
repentance. That is what the 40 days of lent are all about: preparation. It takes us back to the 40 days
that Jesus spent in the desert in preparation for his earthly ministry. It was there that he fought the
battle with the enemy and his flesh and He emerged victoriously.
Many of us will choose to observe the season of Lent by giving up (fasting) certain foods and/or
activities. While that is commendable, we need to remember that fasting in the Christian tradition is
giving up something so that we can obtain something greater. It is giving up things that keep us
from focusing on our relationship with the Creator. So, in our giving up we are challenged to add
something that will enhance our relationship with God. It could be choosing a reading program,
joining a covenant group or participating in a Lenten study. To that end, we are offering a Lenten
study led by the Rev. Dr. Stephen Langford on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in the Chautauqua Room,
beginning March 4, 2020. We will have the unique opportunity to participate in an author-led study
of A God -Shaped World. It is based on Jesus' ministry and teachings in the Gospel of Luke.
