Dear Friends, Before returning home last Friday, I had been living the life of Ora et Labora (prayer and work) at Mount Angel for almost two weeks. I decided this year to take a portion of my vacation and spend it in the monastery. Arriving at the Abbey, I was surprised to find out that the Abbot of Engelberg was visiting. En-gelberg is a Benedictine Abbey in Switzerland from which Mount Angel was founded. Engelberg in Ger-man means angel mountain, hence Mount Angel, as it was at that location that the angels told Blessed Conrad to found the Abbey, which was established in the year 1120. For nearly 900 years there has been continuous Ora et Labora in Engelberg. Monks from Engelberg came to America in the late 1800’s and founded two monasteries, Conception Abbey in Missouri and Mount Angel in Oregon. Since the foundation of Mount Angel in 1882 this is only the 5th time that an Abbot from Engelberg has visited. It was a great honor and joy to be there for this momentous occasion. Ab-bot Jeremy Driscoll took the opportunity to offer a Mass in thanksgiving for the founding of Engelberg and Mount Angel, these locations of constant prayer and work that have enriched the world and are continu-ally working for the building up of the Kingdom of God. Providentially, while I was there, they were of-fering a retreat for Benedictine Oblates which I attend-ed. As an Oblate of Mount Angel, I strive to live ac-cording to the Rule of St. Benedict according to my vocation as a diocesan priest. I decided to become an oblate in my last year at Mount Angel. I had learned so much from the way of life and prayer of the monastic community that I wanted to continue to grow in my relationship in a concrete way. As I pray the Liturgy of the Hours regularly throughout the day in the morning, midday, evening, and night, although I am 200 miles from the Abbey, I am always united to the monastic community of Mount Angel in a specific way as I re-member them and they remember me. The practice of the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours (marking the day with prayer at certain times) is a monastic tradition that has enriched the whole Church, as for centuries men and women have gathered at certain time to pray the Psalms (those same Psalms that Jesus would have prayed every day of His life). It truly is the prayer of the Church and when we pray it, we are united with the whole Church, the Body of Christ, throughout the

world, as we pray the prayer of Christ. This century’s old tradition is still being lived out in monasteries throughout the world and when I go into the church, or my chapel, or step into the choir at the Abbey Church of Mount Angel, I am drawn into the timeless liturgy that draws us all on to heaven. I am grateful for the opportunity to enter into such a beautiful practice each time I visit Mount Angel, for the chanting of the Psalms while I am there, enriches the personal recita-tion of the Psalms in my daily routine of prayer. This visit, I was able to get up and make it to all the prayers with the monks. Sometimes the 5:00am bell is a bit too early, but I was able to get up on the first day, and to live the rhythm of the monastery while I was there. This for me is refreshing and vitalizing in itself. Some of you may be asking what about the Labora, what kind of work did I do? I got to work on a project that began a few years ago, to paint a crucifix with my teacher in iconography, Br. Claude Lane. Each afternoon I was in the studio working and got a good bit of work done while I was there. My time in Mount Angel was relaxing and I pray that the seeds of inspiration that were planted while I was there will be fruitful for the year ahead. For those of you who might be interested in making a visit to the monastery yourself, I highly recommend it. There is a guest house (which is currently being reno-vated) at which you can stay, or you can make a visit while passing through the Willamette Valley. Either way, you will encounter a holy mountain that is a peaceful refuge in the midst of a busy world. You might also get to visit our seminarians who would be happy to give you a tour if they are available. I got to see most of them as we went out to dinner to celebrate the birthday of our newest seminarian, Matthew Ngu-yen, and then I had lunch with them as well to catch up with a few that couldn’t make it to dinner. Our own Ben Bray has returned for his 3rd year of Theology and will be finishing up next year. Please keep him and all our seminarians in your prayers. Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

Fr. Jack D. Shrum Pastor

Holy Father’s Intention:

Workers and the Unemployed.

That all workers may receive respect and protection of their rights, and that the

unemployed may receive the opportunity to contribute to the common good.

The monthly St. Vincent de Paul meeting will be at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, in the Parish Ministry Center. If you are interested in growing your spirituality through fellowship and service to the poor in our area with rent, utilities, clothing, and food, please join us! If you have questions, please contact Karen Sauve at 425-226-2541.

Thank you so much for the canned tuna and canned meats you donated to the food bank in September. During the month of August we gave out 80 Food Bags and 168 sack lunches. With your help, we served 376 people. Since January, we have pledged $12,663 to Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy to help with utilities. This need will increase in the coming winter months, as we strive to help as many as possible keep their lights and heat from being turned off.

Your donations to the food bank allow us to budget less money for food and more for heat and utilities. And a special thanks goes out to those of you who regularly remember St. Vincent de Paul with cash donations. In October, we are collecting Peanut Butter and Jelly/Jam. We will be at the Masses the weekend of October 14th and 15th to collect your gifts. Thank you so much and God bless you for your generosity.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL: It’s not too late to give! Your personal participation in the Appeal is vital to our success as a parish in the Archdiocese – think about it: your one gift will support over 60 ministries and services that serve thousands of people a year! We belong to the wider Church – not just our own parish, but in communion with our brothers and sisters in neigh-boring parishes. Any size gift is appreciated and would help us tremendously - thank you! Donate now – www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate

Help brighten Hait i smiles! The Standing with Haiti Committee is collecting tooth brushes for the children of St. Anne’s School in Haiti. Our delegates will deliver them when they travel to Haiti on October 24th. Won’t you please help? Please, drop off new, unopened tooth brushes in collection boxes located in the church vestibule at all masses through Oct 15th. Any size will do! Thank you and God Bless.

Our Suffering Sisters and Brothers This weekend, October 7th & 8th, St. Anthony Parish will have a second collection to help send relief to those in the USA and Mexico, who have suffered from natural disasters. The money collected will be divided and sent to Catholic Charities for the USA relief and to Catholic Relief Services for the International support. An additional $2000 will be added to each of those to-tals from the Parish Stewardship-Donations to Others account, to help in these disasters. Thank you for continuing to give to those with great need. God Bless You!

Priest Pension Fund Envelopes are included this month for the annual collection for the Priest Pension Fund. Please be generous in supporting our many faithful priests in their retirement. If you are giving elec-tronically and do not receive envelopes, you may give to this fund through our website: www.st-anthony.cc. Thank you!

Christmas Giving It’s that time of year to begin our Christmas Giving Program! We will be in need of many parishioners with gifts and talents to serve in various ways – planning, coordinating, inter-

viewing, gift collecting, gift distributing, providing hospitality, setting up and tearing down, and the list goes on and on. If you are interested in volunteering or being placed on our fami-ly request list, please reach out to Alyssa Beasley at [email protected], or by phone at 425-277-6208.

The Vietnamese Ministry Commission would like to thank all who came and supported our annual “Pho for Haiti” fundraising event in support of our sister parish, Ste. Anne. From the sales of the pho and your generous donations, we raised $2,410.78 dur-ing the event. Afterwards, your generosity continued to pour in with an additional $1,150 in donations, bringing our total to $3,560.78. All proceeds and donations will go directly to support Ste. Anne. The Vietnamese Ministry Commission would also like to thank all the volunteers. Without your support, this would not have been possible. May God bless you and your family abundant-ly. We look forward to your support in the next fundraising event.
