Backgroundinfo:

AsthestrengthandpoweroftheearlychurchgrewfromPentecost,sotoodidthehatredagainstthechurch.ManyChristianswerepersecutedfortheirfaith.PersecutionincreasedinJerusalem,whichforcedmanyChristianstoleaveandgotoothersurroundingcountriesandtellthegoodnewsofJesusthere.AndsobeganthespreadofthegoodnewsofJesustootherpeople,notjustJewsbutallpeople,allovertheworld.

ThegoodnewsofJesusisforallpeople,nomatterwhattheirbackgroundorlifestyle.

ThedisciplesleftJerusalemandtravelledtodifferentcountries.Oneofthedisciples,Philip,decidedtoheadtoSamariatosharethegoodnewsofJesus.ThiswasadifficultplaceforaJewtogoto,astherehadbeendisagreementsandprejudicebetweenthisnationandtheJewishpeopleforalongtime.

AnAngelappearedtoPhilipandtoldhimamessagefromGod,togoSouthdownadesertroadtoGaza.Philipimmediatelyobeyedand,becauseofPhilip’sobedience,Ethiopia,thecountry,wasopeneduptohearingGod’sWord,throughtheEthiopianeunuchbecomingaChristian.PhilipobeyedtheguidanceoftheHolySpiritinhislife.

Whatisaeunuch?TheeasiestwaytoexplaintoyoungchildrenistosaythataeunuchwasaspecialservanttotheQueenofEthiopiaandwasnotallowedtohavegirlfriends,wivesorchildren.Or,forolderchildren,aeunuchisamanwhohashadanoperationthatmakeshimunabletohaveanychildren.

ThiseunuchwasmostprobablyaGentilewhohadconvertedtoJudaism.HehadtravelledfartoworshipinthetempleinJerusalemandwasonhiswaybackhometoEthiopia.HewasanimportantpersoninthecourtoftheQueenofEthiopia,inchargeofthetreasury.HisconversionwasasignificanteventasitbroughtChristianityintothepowerstructuresofanothergovernment.

PhilipconvertedthismanusingtheOldtestamenttounderstandtheNewTestament,showingthattheBibleisneededinitstotality.God’swordisapplicabletoallpeople,ofallages.

HOWDOIBECOMEACHRISTIAN?BecomingaChristianmeansthatyourealisethatyouneedJesusChristinyourlife.JesusistheSonofGodandHecametoearthtosharethegoodnewsthatGodwantstogettoknowusandhavearelationshipwithus.Godlovesus.Godisholyandhatessin.Jesuswasbornintotheworldandisfullyhumanandfullydivine.HeisourwaytocomeintotheholypresenceofGod.BecauseGodcannotbearoundsin,Jesusdiedforoursinsonthecross,sothatwhenweaskforGod’sforgivenessandaskhimtocomeintoourliveswecanfreelycomeintoGod’sholypresence.WehavealldonewrongandweallneedJesus!

JesusalsogivesusagiftcalledtheHolySpirit.TheHolySpiritisthepartofGodthatcanbewithusallthetime.Hewillcomfortus,guideus,leadusintotruth,teachusmoreaboutJesus,andhelpustolivelikeGodwantsustoo.

ChristianstrytoliveforGodthroughtheirownpersonalfaithinGod.Through:readingthebible,whichisourstudyguide;praying,whichisourcommunicationwithGod,wetalktoGodandwelistentowhatHesaysbacktousandhavingarelationshipwithJesus,havingabestfriend.Themoretimeyouspendwithyourbestfriend,themoreyoustarttoactalike;themoretimewespendwithJesus,themorewe’llstarttoactlikeHim.
