Y3 Week 4 English
L.I. I can recognise a range of poetic features.
1. Read the poem and think about the words and phrases that bring the poem to life.
Monday
This week you will be using the poem 'The Magic Box', by Kit Wright as inspiration to write your own 'Magic Box' 'free verse' poem.
Y3 Week 4 English
I will put in the box
the swish of a silk sari on a summer night,
fire from the nostrils of a Chinese dragon,
the tip of a tongue touching a tooth.
I will put in the box
a snowman with a rumbling belly
a sip of the bluest water from Lake Lucerne,
a leaping spark from an electric fish.
I will put into the box
three violet wishes spoken in Gujarati,
the last joke of an ancient uncle,
and the first smile of a baby.
I will put into the box
a fifth season and a black sun,
a cowboy on a broomstick
and a witch on a white horse.
My box is fashioned from ice and gold and steel,
with starts on the lid and secrets in the corners.
Its hinges are the toe joints of dinosaurs.
I shall surf in my box
on the great high rolling breakers of the wild Atlantic,
then wash ashore on a yellow beach
the colour of the sun.
2. Can you spot: Alliteration, Onamatopoeia, Repetition? use colours to highlight the features.

Did the poem have any rhymes? Not all poems have to have rhymes. A poem without a rhyme is known as 'free verse'.
Free verse can have many poetic features, but not rhyme.
'The Magic box' is an imaginative poem, full of textures, sights and sounds which you would not normally be able to put into a box of any sort, but this is a magic box, anything can and will go in.
Remember, it can be anything. Keep it magical and imaginative. Remember to use the senses.

Y3 Week 4 English
TuesdayL.I. I can use figurative language for description.
Read 'The Magic Box' again and look at the use adjectives, similes and metaphors for description. Today, you need to add description for the things you are putting into your box.
Idea: The purring sound of my cat... becomes 'The peaceful purr of my precious cat
Idea: The cool, refreshing sea...becomes 'The turquoise sea, with its swaying waves
Idea: Unicorn wings flapping... becomes 'The unicorn wings singing sweetly, as they glide through the air'
Task 1: Add description to your ideas.
Y3 Week 4 English
Task 2: Use your wonderful ideas and figurative language to write your own 'free verse' poem, just like Kit Wrights' 'The Magic Box'. Remember, 'free verse' does not use rhyme.

f) Look back at your own ideas from Tuesday. Did you include all of them or do you want to add some more?
g) Look at the reminders of figurative language. What can you edit to enhance your poem?
h) Remember, you are editing, so you can cross out or add whatever you think your poem needs to enhance it.
i) Go through the checklist above and tick them, as you check them.
