Lenovo has enhanced the graphics performance of its successful IdeaPad Y510p. The device is now available with either a GeForce GT 750M (SLI) or a GeForce GT 755M (SLI). We grabbed the brand new dual-GPU version and compared its performance with genuine high-end models.Ads by GoogleFastest Laptop PC - www.pro-star.com17.3" LED, Intel Core i7-3970X Dual 780M GTX. For the original German review, see here. The IdeaPad Y510p 59400120 we are testing is currently priced somewhere around 1050 Euros to 1250 Euros (~$1443 to ~$1718) depending on the (online) shop. Lenovo installs a powerful quad-core CPU under the hood of the 2.9 kilogram and 387 x 259 x 39 millimeter chassis to justify the price. Intel's Core i7-4700MQ is presently very popular due to its high performance. The premium-range representative is accompanied by a swift 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM bar with a memory capacity of 8 GB (max. 16 GB). Besides that, Lenovo uses a high-definition 15.6-inch screen that is, unlike the IdeaPad Y500, non-reflective.The real highlight is found on the laptop's right. Lenovo installs a so-called ultrabay slot that allows inserting many alternative components, such as a further hard drive, an optical drive, or as in our case, a second graphics card. Rather than only one GeForce GT 755M, the review sample can make use of a dual-GPU array. The GeForce GT 755M SLI has to compete against the old GT 750M SLI, as well as premium accelerators, such as the GTX 765M and GTX 770M. Thus, we will concentrate on speed in this review.Buyers who want to save a bit of money, and who do not focus as much on performance will find something among the lower-priced single-GPU models that are partly sold without an operating system. The IdeaPad Y510p 59400120 is powered by a large 1000 GB hybrid hard drive (SSHD) with a preinstalled version of Windows 8 64-bit.Metallic lid

Unfortunately, the chassis has not been modified in the course of the GPU update. Besides the unreliable and extremely wobbly touchpad, the display's sensitive, high-gloss bezel is still annoying. Lenovo should have also made the keyboard bed matte. More information about the casing can be read in the earlier test report.to topConnectivityInterfacesThe ports' positioning is still unfavorable. The distribution that is concentrated on the sides' front will annoy both left-handed and right-handed users when using an external mouse. That applies to the USB ports (1x 2.0 + 2x 3.0), the HDMI and VGA out, as well as the RJ45 Gigabit LAN port, among others. Only the Kensington lock and power socket have been cleverly placed in the laptop's rear area. While no interfaces are on the rear, a card reader is located on the front. A 720p webcam and two microphones are found above the screen. The laptop does not feature a fingerprint scanner, eSATA or FireWire port.CommunicationIntel's Centrino Wireless-N 2230 takes care of wireless communication. Despite the well-known brand name, it performance was only satisfactory. The signal strength at most displayed 1-2 bars, if at all, when the laptop was used over ten meters away from the router, and had to transmit through a few walls. However, most laptops barely do a better job in this scenario. The 2.4 GHz adapter technically supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 (300 Mbit/s maximum).Left: Power socket, VGA, RJ45, Gigabit LAN, HDMI, 2x USB 3.0

MaintenanceLike the IdeaPad Y500, the successor's maintenance options are good. Although it is not possible to directly access the processor or primary graphics card, which are connected to the (accessible) casing fan via the heat pipe, it is easy to access the Wi-Fi module, both working memory banks, and the 2.5-inch slot after removing the base plate. The screenshots below illustrate how to remove the ultrabay tray.Following the instructions,...

...and having pushed two levers in the right position,...

...it is possible to take out the second graphics card.

SoftwareLenovo installs a lot of software on the IdeaPad Y510p - too much for our taste. A few programs are slightly redundant and only slow down the system. The handy OneKey Recovery and clearly arranged Energy Management are praiseworthy. Some users will also appreciate PowerDVD 10, as well as the trial versions of Office 365 and McAfee's Internet Security. A "real" recovery DVD is not included.AccessoriesThe only accessories are a setup poster and leaflets. Lenovo opted for a strong 170 watt power supply to ensure that the components are sufficiently powered. It weighs a total of 684 grams. The 6-cell battery only weighs half as much with 322 grams.WarrantyThe manufacturer includes a 24 month warranty.Preinstalled software

to topDisplayWhile the IdeaPad Y500 was fitted with a glare-type screen from LG Philips (LP156WF1-TLC1), Lenovo uses a matte, Full HD model in the Y510p. Although the new screen has a similar name (LP156WF1-TLB2), some rates are very different.

Distribution of brightnessThe biggest improvement is the higher brightness. We measured 362 cd/m in contrast to 259 cd/m (+40%). The great brightness makes the laptop ideal for outdoor use. Content remains recognizable even in direct sunlight. We were not as satisfied with the brightness distribution. An illumination of 72% is fairly poor, even if this shortcoming is barely noticed in practical use. The middling black value has a slightly greater effect. 0.7 cd/m leads to a certain grayish cast in dark video and game scenes.Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p vs. sRGB (grid)

We have to mention the bluish cast common for laptops. The colors and color balance partly deviate greatly from the ideal in an uncalibrated state. Thus, professional users should look for another device. For example, the Alienware 14 and Gigabyte P34G do a better job here. However, color space coverage of 82% sRGB and 56% AdobeRGB are good in the laptop sector.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p-59400120 outdoorsTalking about good: The contrast of 550:1 moves toward the midfield. The image subjectively looks saturated, which is not lastly due to the decent viewing angles.Viewing angles: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p

to topPerformanceHaswell

ProcessorThe new Haswell generation will not be an unknown name to most gamers. Intel's swift 2.4-3.4 GHz Core i7-4700MQ starts off the premium, or quad-core segment. The 22 nm model can process eight threads at the same time via Hyper Threading. A 6 MB L3 cache is also a guaranty for high speeds. Like the more expensive Core i7-4800MQ and Core i7-4900MQ models, the TDP is 47 watts. The integrated HD Graphics 4600 graphics chip cannot be used in the configuration at hand. The SLI array prevents graphics switching based on Nvidia's Optimus technology. According to our information, Optimus should be available in the single-GPU models.

System information: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p-59400120Turbo BoostWe find it especially aggravating that Lenovo did not eliminate the Turbo's "dead zone". The Core i7-4700MQ frequently dropped to its base clock under simultaneous CPU and GPU load. However, it was usually 3.2 - 3.4 GHz when only the processor was loaded. Fortunately, the missing Turbo rarely had an adverse impact in the gaming benchmarks because the graphics power mostly dominates. We would nevertheless advise the manufacturer to deal with this issue.Single-core rendering

CPU PerformanceThe IdeaPad Y501p copes with pure processor benchmarks without any drops. The 15-inch laptop follows other 4700MQ or 4700HQ laptops, such as Toshiba's Satellite P70-A-104 (645 points) or Schenker's XMG C703 (643 points), with 642 points in the Cinebench R15 multi-CPU test. There were no nasty surprises in the single-CPU test either. 128 points come close to Gigabyte's P25W gaming contender (132 points).Cinebench R11.5

Graphics CardGPU Boost

Lenovo combines two GeForce GT 755M chips into a powerful dual-GPU array. The DirectX 11 scion lures customers with 384 unified shaders, and a large 2048 MB GDDR5 memory (128-bit interface).Compared with the GeForce GT 750M, Nvidia has slightly increased the core's clock. The GT 755M works with 980 rather than 967 MHz. Up to 1097 MHz would even be possible during load owing to the GPU Boost technology (according to the GPU-Z tool). Like the Kepler models, the GT 755M is built in the 28 nm process. The GPU driver should be updated regularly to ensure the best performance in new games. The ForceWare 331.82 driver that was used in our benchmarks worked flawlessly, except for graphics and performance issues in battery mode. The preinstalled 311.54 driver version was several months old at the time of the test.5.9Windows 8 Experience IndexProcessorCalculations per second7.9Memory (RAM)Memory operations per second7.9GraphicsDesktop performance for Windows Aero7.7Gaming graphics3D business and gaming graphics7.7Primary hard diskDisk data transfer rate5.9GPU PerformanceWhen the SLI is enabled, the IdeaPad Y510p is not located in the mid-range, but in the high-end range. Even premium devices have to be wary owing to Nvidia's good driver development. The GeForce GT 755M SLI's enormous power becomes evident in the 3DMark 13 FireStrike test, among others. With a graphics score of 4106 points, the dual-graphics array places itself right between the GTX 770 (3347 points @ Asus G750JX), and the Radeon HD 8970M (5110 points @ One K73-3N). It would only have been 3771 points for the IdeaPad Y501p without the driver update. The Unigine Heaven 3.0 benchmark (1920x1080 pixels, high, default tessellation) displayed a similar ranking. An average of 53 fps is a plus of 12% on the GTX 770M (47.5 fps @ Toshiba's Qosmio X70-A-11R), and a plus of 46% on the GTX 765M (36.2 fps @ Schenker XMG A503). The SLI array is, however, no threat for the GeForce GTX 780M (72 fps @ MSI GT70H).3DMark 11 - 1280x720 Performance GPU

Storage DeviceCrystalDiskMark

Although the review sample sports a hybrid hard drive, the laptop sometime works noticeably slower than a device with a solid state drive in Windows routine. The 9.5 mm thick Seagate ST1000LM014 compensates for the relatively low speed (5400 rpm) with a high capacity (1000 GB), and a small 8 GB flash memory that takes care of frequently used data. Most HDDs do not achieve a sequential read speed of 112 MB/s or a write rate of 100 MB/s (CrystalDiskMark). The HD Tune tool recorded an average transfer rate of 87 MB/s, which is also a good result. The access time is approximately 19 ms. Modern solid state drives manage less than 0.1 ms and are also superior to the SSHD in small files (e.g. One K73-3S).Replacing the 2.5-inch drive or buying the corresponding model should be considered when the maximum is to be retrieved from the IdeaPad Y510p.HD TuneCrystalDiskMark 3.0

Gaming PerformanceMany games can be played in (very) high details

As expected, the GeForce GT 755M SLI struggles with the typical drawbacks of a dual-GPU array. Besides the high driver dependency, it is primarily micro-stutters that are quite distinctive in the IdeaPad Y510p. Despite usable frame rates, the gameplay often does not seem very smooth.Although the GeForce GTX 770 lags behind by over 10%, the image looks smoother with a single high-end chip. The SLI array tears past a GTX 765M by almost 50%. It can be seen that Nvidia designs good drivers in the single GT 755M. The system only computes about half as fast when SLI is disabled. Most titles can be played in the native resolution with nice looks when anti-aliasing and maximum graphics options are not used (concerns Assassin's Creed IV, Crysis 3, Metro: Last Light & Far Cry 3). This is not a matter of course for a 1100 Euros (~$1512) laptop. A few games like Dota 2, GRID 2, and BioShock: Infinite are even accelerated to over 40 fps (average). We would not recommend for less savvy users to buy a dual-GPU system though. Irregular maintenance could cause performance losses (no SLI profile in the driver).Graphics CardOverall Performance

System NoiseThe IdeaPad Y510p is surprisingly quiet considering it is a laptop with two graphics cards. In contrast to other SLI contenders, such as the Clevo P370SM barebone, even sensitive users will find the noise development tolerable. 30 - 31 dB(A) in idle operation stands for a barely audible level that comes close to the IdeaPad Y500 - despite better hardware. The casing fans spin with almost 35 dB(A) in 3D operation, which can also be called acceptable. The device only becomes more audible during full load. 44 dB(A) was reached when Prime95 and Furmark ran at the same time in the test. Some gaming laptops, e.g. MSI GE60H, climb beyond 50 dB(A) even with slower graphics chips.Although we did not find the IdeaPad Y510p's fan characteristic ideal, the cooling works very dynamically and without massive fluctuations.Noise LevelIdle30.3 / 30.8 / 31.2 dB(A)

Stress test (w/ CPU throttling)

The moderate system noises naturally have an impact on the temperatures. Both the processor and the primary graphics card approached the critical 100 C range when the system was maxed out. The Core i7-4700MQ throttled to 800 MHz due to the extreme rates. This was also true to almost the same extent for the secondary GT 755M with 100-200 MHz. However, throttling will not be an issue in normal (gaming) routine. It can also get quite warm on the exterior. A maximum of 53 C on the upper side and 46 C on the underside (after an hour of full load) were a bit high. At least the cooling's setup kept the wrist rest below 40 C. The laptop remained considerably cooler in idle operation with an average of 30 C.Max. LoadIdle

The speakers located above the keyboard produce a decent sound that surpasses that of most contenders. Not every laptop can boast with a certification for Dolby Home Theater v4.Although the IdeaPad Y510p does not sport a subwoofer, a slight bass is audible in music, games, and movies. The good maximum volume for a 15-inch device is another bonus point, although it should not be overdone for precision reasons. All in all, the manufacturer has done a good job. We would not say that external speakers are a must.to topEnergy ManagementPower ConsumptionThe power consumption is acceptable in view of the high-performance. The IdeaPad Y501p consumes a bit more power than identically swift laptops (11.3 - 26.1 watts @ Toshiba Qosmio X70-A-11R) with 15.5 - 31.6 watts in idle. However, the 15-inch device does not feature graphics switching. The omitted Optimus technology is unimportant in full load. 113 - 136 watts in the first part of 3DMark06 and a maximum of 140 watts during the stress test could also be the rates of a premium laptop with a single-GPU (Gigabyte P25W: up to 132 watts).Power consumptionOff / Standby0.1 / 0.1 Watt

Battery RuntimeReader's Test

Classic Test

The battery runtime is not one of the IdeaPad Y510p strengths. Despite the strong 6-cell model (now 72 rather than 62 Wh), the laptop is drained quite soon. The all-rounder had to be reconnected to the outlet after 88 minutes in Battery Eater's Classic test, which simulates high load.Better runtimes can be achieved when SLI is disabled and the brightness is reduced. The battery ran through our internet test for almost three hours. A maximum runtime of approximately four hours is not record breaking either.Battery runtimeIdle (without WLAN, min brightness)3h 51min

to topVerdictLenovo IdeaPad Y510p

The verdict from our last review also applies to the new version. Lenovo's IdeaPad Y510p is a unique multimedia laptop that turns into a swift gamer due to the ultrabay.Apart from the micro-stutters and driver dependency, the GeForce GT 755M SLI is unexpectedly impressive. While buyers have to invest over 1500 Euros (~$2062) with other manufacturers for appealing performance, the IdeaPad Y510p only costs a bit more than 1000 Euros (~$1375). This price not only includes an above-average sound quality, but also a bright Full HD screen. The noise emissions do not give much reason for complaint either. The buyer has to be willing to make compromises in other areas though. Besides the sensitive display bezel, the interface positioning also proves to be annoying. The battery runtime, the touchpad and the temperatures could also be better. The main point of criticism is the CPU's Turbo that is disabled in high load.Nevertheless, the IdeaPad Y510p has fully earned the grade "Good". The exciting ultrabay design lets the device stick out from the masses. Worthy 15-inch alternatives (GTX 770M or faster) would be Gigabyte's P25W and Clevo's P150SM and P157SM barebones.Review sample courtesy of ...For ComparisonAssassins Creed IV: Black Flag - 1920x1080 (Very) High / On / HBAO+ (PhysX off) AA:4x MS

The manufacturer uses metal for some surfaces.

The keyboard is striking even in an unlit state.

The base plate can be almost completely removed (screws).

The laptop has a height of almost four centimeters.

The Y510p can be considered a desktop replacement due to the dual-GPU array.

The device soon gets smudged despite its matte finish.

Lenovo should have left out the glossy display bezel.

Most components can be accessed.

The ports' positioning is unfavorable for mouse users.

Right-handed users will also feel the heat.

The battery is inserted into the laptop's rear.

The hardware configuration is impressive.

The secondary GT 755M's fan is bright red.

No, this is not a conventional mSATA slot.

One working memory bank is still empty.

The popular Centrino Wireless-N 2230 is used as the Wi-Fi module.

The SSHD is underneath a metal sheet.

A hard drive or optical drive can be inserted in place of the SLI graphics card.

The battery's capacity has been increased from 62 to 72 Wh.

The 720p, HD webcam is surrounded by two microphones.

Hardly any other keyboard offers so many special functions.

The speakers are also highlighted in red.

The 2.0 system comes from JBL.

The keys' shape is quite unusual.

The laptop sports a four-column number pad.

State-of-the-art technology from Nvidia and Intel.

The extremely wobbly touchpad is one of the Y510p's biggest shortcomings.

One USB port supports sleep & charge.

Headphones and external speakers can be connected on the right.

The device can be optionally secured with a Kensington lock.

The power socket is on the laptop's left.

Two USB 3.0 ports are standard nowadays.

A card reader is placed beside the status indicator.

Lenovo relies on a thick, 170 watt power supply.
