WelCome To BorNHolmWhen Bornholm comes into view, you feel an unusual breeze coming from the rocky island: the rush of history, because as you approach Bornholm by sea, you are cresting the same waves that as Vikings, pirates, crusaders and trading ships have been cresting for more than 1,000 years. Bornholm’s strategic location at the gateway to the Baltic Sea gives the island a prominent and significant position on every sea chart. Modern yachters are not the only people drawn to the riches of Bornholm. Over the ages, Bornholm has hosted colourful, legendary visitors – welcome and unwelcome alike. Some enriched the island, while others brought death and destruction. The common denominator is that Bornholm still provides unique and memorable experiences for every visitor. The island’s castles and strongholds were necessary because Bornholm has always been a key target for the powers that be in the Baltic Sea Region. As you enter Hammerhavn harbour, Hammershus towers high above you. This is the largest castle ruin in northern Europe, and back when the castle was newly completed and intact, it was used for assembling large armies that set out on crusades in the then pagan Baltic States. As you enter Gudhjem harbour, you are calling at a port that was also home to Vikings. Today, Gudhjem is one of the richest areas of Viking settlements in all Denmark. Viking treasures are still being unearthed on the island, as are relics from heavily laden trading ships. At frequent intervals, splendid silver treasu-res or priceless coins from as far away as Arabia, England and the Netherlands are discovered. Whereas these hoards have been unearthed from the rich soil, other prehistoric relics above ground also attest to Bornholm’s archaeological wealth. Bornholm’s location along the Fenno-Scandian fault line gives the island unique landscapes and also explains the natural harbours created where Bornholm’s ports are located today. All types of Scan-dinavian countryside can be experienced within 15 km of a Bornholm harbour. At the fault line itself, exposed at NaturBornholm, it is possible to stand with one foot on Scandinavian bedrock and the other on European lowland bedrock, the latter being 1.2 billion years younger than the former. This explains the picturesque rocky coasts of Northern Bornholm and the miles of silvery sandy beaches of Southern Bornholm. To complete this yachter’s paradise, there are more than 20 splendid harbours around the island where visiting yachters are welcome to experience a magnificent cocktail of unique urban ports, idyllic fishing hamlets and harbours surrounded by beautiful scenery. Together with Bornholm’s status in recent years as a gourmet island and the island’s reputation for countless local specialities, we the people of Bornholm do everything we can to ensure that visiting yachters will want to return year after year. In addition, Bornholm has more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in Denmark. Experience Bornholm and its 140 km coastline that is never further away than a day of sailing, regardless of whether you are coming from Sweden, Germany or Poland or another location in Denmark.Bornholm’s most characteristic harbours are those blasted out of rock, nestled in a unique village and graced by white smokehouse chimneys where the sea’s “silver” (herring) is smoked into the renowned “Gold of Bornholm”. Yet Bornholm also boasts fully equipped modern marinas, commercial fishing har-bours and unique “offshore harbours”.The island’s inland areas abound with unique sights and activities, too, including traces of Bornholm’s inhabitants and visitors over the past 1,000 years, countless sights of interest, and a host of craft artists evenly scattered across the island. These are just some of the many opportunities awaiting you.No trip to Bornholm is complete without a side-trip to the Ertholmene archipelago, 10 nautical miles north-east of Bornholm where the natural harbour formed between the islands of Christiansø and Frede-riksø served as the world’s first naval base intended to protect Denmark from the Swedish navy. Today, the islands comprise one of the most unique, beautiful and well-preserved communities in Europe where the some 100 inhabitants, who all live in listed buildings, contribute to an experience that defies a brief explanation but has to be experienced to be comprehended.Bornholm also abounds with quiet coves complete with sandy beaches – beautiful for riding at anchor. Or vertical cliffs in natural harbours and bays where you are moored to a rock as your barbecue grill sends wafts of savoury smoke skyward. From the rocky coast of the north to the sandy beaches of the south, great experiences are always in store for children and adults alike – in any weather – and the long hours of sunshine certainly brighten up any seafaring adventure!

explanation of symbols:

All of Bornholm’s harbours want to offer the best facilities for a fine holiday experience: showers, toilets, drinking water and electricity,

and – at many harbours – wireless internet (see the pictograms for each harbour).

If the facilities are not located right on the quay, the distance from quay to facility will be indicated. If you would like assistance from the

motor repair workshop, sailmaker, boatyard or mobile crane, please contact the harbour master who will put you in touch

with the business you need.

Only 400 metres from the marina where the “capital” of Bornholm has eve-rything yachters need in the way of shops, including charming restaurants and cafés. The town is also the hub for public bus services all over the island, and bicycle and car rental are only a two-minute walk from the marina. You will also find much more in and around Rønne, such as indoor swimming baths, fine bathing beaches, an 18-hole golf course, bowling alley, concert venue, theatre and cinema.

Excursions:

Large port with active commercial fishery. More than DKK 25 million was invested in the port in 2012–2013, resulting in Denmark’s lo-veliest harbour baths, the lowering of quays, a canal environment, and more. The Port of Hasle has become a kayaking hotspot where it is possible to hire kayaks on the waterfront. Hasle is also well-supplied with shops and restaurants, including the new lifestyle café on the waterfront, as well as an interesting activity area, the smokehouse museum at the end of the new canal to the south, and Columbus – a brand-new maritime museum where the canal joins the harbour basin. The town also features the Grønbechs Gård cultural centre with changing exhibitions of craft art, etc.

Excursions:

In addition to the new town beach, where an outdoor hot tub has been constructed, there are splendid sandy beaches, and vast wood-land areas (with clay pits and coal mines) south of the town. Visitors can find further details about the cultural history of Hasle Tiles, etc., on site. Bornholm’s rocky coast begins just north of the harbour area. The port’s modern service building contains a lounge with Wi-Fi, a coin-operated laundry and self-service information point with always up-to-date weather forecasts and the code for bathing/toilet facilities. The harbour is safe to enter day and night in all kinds of weather. The harbour also has plenty of space for visi-ting yachters and is well sheltered if the Isle of Sunshine is hit by uncommon bad weather.

The harbour can be entered day and night, but not in hard north-westerly winds. If you are in the middle basin, the harbour is safe during all wind conditions, however. The harbour has 3 basins. The 2 southernmost always have space for visiting yachters. A barbecue shed for use by visiting yach-ters is located near the harbour’s toilet and bathing facilities. The “Bixen” harbour kiosk is open in the summer.Vang was originally a fishing hamlet and un-til a few years ago also served as a shipping port for granite quarried in the Ringebak-ker hills until a few years ago. “Vang Pier”, south of the town, is a prominent memo-rial to the granite quarrying of the modern era. Today it also includes a small sandy beach and diving boards. Details about the area’s granite quarrying and production are posted in a small thatched building on the waterfront.

The streets of the village wind their way picturesquely up the steep coastal slope. Vang’s unique peaceful atmosphere, scenic splendour and fine eateries – not to men-tion trails leading from the fishing hamlet to wildlife areas such as Slotslyngen and Ringebakker – the latter with many abando-ned quarries – make this harbour definitely worth a visit. Other sights of interest nearby include Bornholm’s only preserved water-mill with an overshot waterwheel, as well as artist Peter Bonnén’s bridge across the ravine at the quarry south of the harbour. A gallery and sculpture park are found along the waterfront.Five hundred metres north of the harbour is the highest waterfall in Denmark: Pisse-bækken (“Pee Brook”), which is not always water-bearing in the long, sunny Bornholm summers, however.

More than DKK 25 million has been invested in this port, formerly used for the embarka-tion of granite quarried nearby, and nestled in a magnificent scenic setting at the foot of the Hammershus Castle Ruin. The invest-ment has resulted in beautiful granite edging, brand-new service facilities, a café and inte-resting signboards telling the history of when the granite quarrying industry employed more than 300 people at the harbour. Visiting yachters are welcome in the outer basin and at vacant berths in the inner har-bour.Hammer Harbour has no village activities or modern service facilities on offer, but is a beautifully situated harbour in scenic sur-roundings. The harbour is an ideal point of departure for hikes through the Slotslyngen or Hammerknuden nature areas. Regardless of whether you wish to immerse yourself in nature, the abandoned quarries, or the riveting history of the largest castle

ruins in Northern Europe, this site is unique in many ways.A guided tour on one of the harbour’s tour boats through the area’s fascinating scenery culminates when the boat enters one of the deep clefts in the cliffs just south of Ham-merhavnen Harbour. If you like guided ang-ling trips at sea, then book your place on the local trolling/jigging boat for an unforgettable angling experience. Hammerhavnen Harbour is a fine base for unique skin-diving experi-ences, like exploring the biggest accessible wrecks in northern Europe, or the caves of Hammerknuden Peninsula where skin-divers can explore deep under the peninsula. A few hundred metres from the harbour is Born-holm’s largest lake, Hammersøen, featuring a barbecue shelter and an observation dock. You can also try riding down Denmark’s lon-gest aerial cableway and landing in Opalsøen Lake. The harbour has a small sandy beach. The closest village is Sandvig (2 km).

A genuine “Bornholm harbour”, i.e., it was blasted out of the rocks, and the chunks of granite this created were used to construct the solid harbour structures and surfaces. The port has achieved fame in conjunction with “Folkemødet” – Denmark’s Political Fe-stival on Bornholm, attracting 60,000 parti-cipants in 2013, located in the centre of the town, surrounded by a stimulating urban environment with excellent shopping and dining options right along the waterfront, in-cluding a complete range of fish dishes. The café atmosphere spreads all the way down to the quay, peaking in week 28 during the summer jazz festival.Visitors are welcome throughout the harbour area, which is so popular that in the busiest part of the season, and in spite of the modest number of native boats, it is possible to walk across the inner harbour basin using the visi-ting boats as stepping stones.

Learn more about the cultural history of the port’s gate, which closes off the inner basin from the outer basin during strong onshore winds. The port has new bathing and toilet facilities, and a self-service information point with always up-to-date weather forecasts, and the codes you need for for bathing, toilet and Wi-Fi.From 1 October to 1 May, the gate opens and closes on weekdays only during nor-mal working hours. The port can be entered day and night, whenever the black sphere is raised or the three vertically aligned red lights are not shining. If they are illuminated, the port is closed. The line of seaward approach is found by two green lights, as well as a fore and aft beacon showing the port’s safe entrance direction.

The port is one of Bornholm’s largest, with active commercial fishery and many trolling activities. In 2014, more than 330 trolling boats ga-thered in the harbour for “Trolling Master Bornholm” to compete to see who could catch the most salmon and the biggest sal-mon. Apart from these four days, the port has plenty of space for visiting yachters who are welcome in all basins. The port has a self-service information point with always up-to-date weather forecasts, as well as the codes you need for bathing, toilet and Wi-Fi. The port can be entered day and night in all types of weather and is very calm regar-dless of season and weather conditions.

The port and the town of Tejn have virtually everything a visiting yachter needs: in addi-tion to a supermarket, speciality shops and eateries, Tejn offers service businesses, which include a large slipway, shipyard, ship electrician, ship engine workshop, sailmaker’s, ship’s equipment business, coin-operated laundry, etc. There are also splendid opportunities along the waterfront to bathe in the Baltic Sea or barbecue with a beautiful view to the north and south of the harbour, possibly supplemented with a dip in the outdoor hot tub or a visit to the wood-fired sauna. The Port of Tejn is the closest harbour to the Art Museum of Bornholm and the intri-guing Rø Golf Course.

Gudhjem’s two harbours are of the authen-tic Bornholm variety: they were blasted out of the granite horst jutting up from the coast towards Bokuld and give the harbour and vil-lage an unusual Mediterranean atmosphere. There are daily ferry connections to Christi-ansø Island from the eastern harbour, and the tour boat “Thor” – which just celebrated its centenary – provides a guided tour along the coastal Helligdomsklipper rock formati-ons, before docking below the Bornholm Art Museum. The village is a vibrant tourist desti-nation abounding with eateries, live music, a variety of shops, a cinema, indoor swimming baths, galleries, craft art (including a glass-blowing workshop), and museums, such as the Oluf Høst Museum situated close to the western harbour. At 10 am the atmosphere thickens as some of Denmark’s most renow-ned songs are sung on the waterfront as the first ferry departs for Christiansø Island.

The rock formations around the harbours are frequently used to enjoy everything from smoked herring from the smokehouse on the waterfront, sunbathing, a dip in the deep blue Baltic Sea, to watching beautiful sunsets. In the eastern harbour, visiting yachters are welcome in all basins, but two quays are re-served for the Christiansø ferry service and the tour boat Thor. Christiansø Island is so unique that it defies brief description but should most definitely be included in any Bornholm yachting ho-liday.Christiansø and Frederiksø islands form a complete community with around 100 inha-bitants, living on either side of the natural harbour formed between Christiansø and Frederiksø: there is an inn, a church, police station, grocery shop with a bakery, post of-fice, museum, galleries, a community centre and a shop where the renowned Christiansø marinated herring are produced and sold. The island is self-sufficient in electricity and has its own water supply which for centuries has come from rainwater collected in open wells. In recent years, however, the supply has been supplemented with drilled wells and water conveyed to the island from Born-holm. Everything on both islands is housed in buildings listed on the historic register, as the islands previously formed a large forti-fication. The harbour has two approaches, one on either side of the swing bridge, sepa-rating the harbour basin into south and north harbours. Visiting yachters are welcome in both, but only a few berths are available in the north harbour.

The harbour can be entered day and night and always one or other of the approaches will not have the wind against you. Strong winds blowing directly into the entrances create some turbulence in the harbour. If the harbour cannot be entered, a black sphere is raised and three red lights are switched on. The island’s unique atmosphere does not re-ally start until the first 5 pm gathering at the inn, to celebrate that fact that all the “three-hour tourists” have left the islands for the day. A visit to the islands in your own boat is an unforgettable experience.

In the Gourmet Town of Svaneke, it is also pos-sible to watch the making of countless local foods, such as sweets, caramels, liquorice, ice cream, chocolate, wine gums, cider, soft drinks, pasta, pesto and not least the world-renowned “Svaneke Beer”, or enjoy a wide variety of fish from the one of the island’s biggest smoke-houses, among other venues, offering hot-smo-ked herring all day long. The town also features a variety of shops, a cinema, galleries, a large puppet theatre and several active craft art businesses, as well as interesting buildings like the post mill, or the combined landmark and water tower, designed by world-famous Danish architect Jørgen Utzon. Fine eateries are located right along the quay. A local jig-fishing boat offers angling experiences. South of the harbour is a small sandy beach where the diving board offers experiences for adults and children. A stay in Svaneke is a unique experience which can be supplemented in southerly or westerly winds by dropping an-chor along the local skerry coastline and mo-oring your boat to a rock.

This is a unique harbour with an active commercial fishery and is where the “Sea Fresh” project, now found throughout northern Europe, started in 2011.The harbour was blasted out of rock in the centre of the Sunshine Town of Svaneke, which boasts more hours of sunshine than any other town in Denmark, and was also named the loveliest market town in 2013, and offers a wide variety of activities. The harbour was fitted with a new jetty in 2011 and the harbour is calm in all wind direc-tions. The addition of the jetty made it possible to increase the capacity for visi-ting yachters, so there is plenty of space, even during onshore winds. The area bet-ween the new and the old jetty is fitted up as a bathing area with a diving board. The town’s tourist information office is in the harbour office, with enough inspiration for many years of return visits, and a lounge on the first floor provides a magnificent view of the Baltic Sea and the harbour.

The Port of Nexø welcomes all visiting yachters in the five northernmost basins featuring brand-new facilities, including two trolling ramps, a coin-operated laundry, barbecue grill and smoking oven, free Wi-Fi and low-cost accommodation. The port area’s location adjacent to the centre of Nexø, surrounded by restaurants, shops, museums and craft art, forms a splendid setting where 2,870 metres of qu-ayside provide plenty of space for visiting yachts of all shapes and sizes. Small private harbour with active commer-cial fishery and a water depth of only one metre. The harbour is usually filled with local boats, but in good weather a few smaller boats can visit this small fishing hamlet, which has an active herring smokehouse (also a restaurant), bicycles for hire, crazy golf, etc. The mouth of Øle Stream is 300 metres east of the harbour, and following the stream 300 metres inland brings you to an interesting area with the island’s largest for-mer sea-trout hatchery and a splendid wa-termill. Nearby, a block of granite marks the intersection of 55°N and 15°E – at the very centre of the European Central Time Zone.
