Yachting Experts represented Florida manufacturers and pre-owned vessels at first Cartagena Boat Show. As our international presence continues to be our competitive advantage, we continue to seek markets with growth potential. A first year event, the Cartagena Boat Show demonstrated to be well attended by very interested boaters looking to purchase foreign product and great opportunities in the pre-owned market.

It seems people have stopped waiting around and are getting back in the game, inventory levels of

good, pre-owned boats less than five years old are down, and prices are starting to climb. Looking for

an alternative? How about a new boat. The features, efficiency, and technology have never been better.

Combining the high performance, blue water cruising abilities of the classic Fly-bridge with the fish raising abilities of the Offshore Express, and the single-level lei-surely entertaining features of the popular Sport Yacht series, has created a vessel like no other, a true bridge between all of them.

Riviera’s head of design, Stephen Ford explains, “the new 565 SUV design was based on a similar platform to the popular 53 Enclosed Flybridge”, currently on hull

number 28 since it’s launch in 2011. Fea-turing three cabins and two bathrooms, the new 565 SUV has a flexible accommo-dation plan with sleeping capacity for six to eight adults. Featured Broker/

“Is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal” and it is how we start many of our sales meetings. When our brokers ideal of success is communicating their excite-ment of boating to their customers and feel they have achieved success while at Yachting Experts, we have succeeded.

How has the yacht/boating market changed since you joined YE?

-Starting as a broker in the retail sector of the boating industry in 2010 was a chal-lenge in itself. Being a recent graduate after the economic downturn, the indus-

tries that were hurt the most included the boating industry; however, I took a leap of faith and joined a team that has supported me in every aspect of the business, and I honestly award them a large portion of my success. The year 2010 and 2011 were stagnant since the markets weren’t boom-ing and people were uncertain of where businesses were heading. Fortunately, as an international firm we diversified into Latin American markets and that is what’s been keeping us alive even in the worst of economies. Miami is a melting pot or how I like to call it: “The Door to Latin America.” Being in Miami is a big plus for any broker-age firm because most of the times foreign clients like to come and execute the transaction in the United States. They feel more confident dealing with brokers face to face and obtaining legal representation in the US. We have a solid infrastructure

Ernesto at Cartagena’s Boat Show

Ernesto Bustamante

Ernesto Bustamante joined Yachting Ex-perts at our very beginning. He is a model broker at Yachting Experts when we men-tor a new broker coming into this indus-try. We value experience, however, are discouraged by some “bad habits” we’ve encountered with some seasoned brokers. Enthusiasm, commitment, and the con-stant desire to learn & concur this indus-try are attributes we should never lose. Success, as Earl Nightingale describes it,

in Miami and strong ties in Central & Latin America, and that’s where our success lies. The most important thing today is we survived the tough times, and from now on it’s going to be the expansion era for Yachting Experts.

What unique skills do you possess that makes you a “Yachting Expert”?

-I talk about boats from the heart; that’s my unique skill. To make a rewarding career in sales is not easy, but it’s not hard either if you believe in the products you sell. I have a philosophy: “I’m not going to sell you a boat/yacht I wouldn’t buy with my own money.” Honesty plays a crucial role in my business and I blame that for my success today. When clients ask me for recommendations, I talk from the heart as if the boat they’re purchasing was for my personal use. At the end of the day, clients do appreciate honesty and them coming back to me for representation proves it. I personally cater the sport fish-ing and high-end center console market, because that’s what I like and enjoy sell-ing. I could spend hours talking to cap-tains and clients about the pros and cons of each Bertram, Hatteras, or Viking, and this has developed my confidence and people skills throughout my career. This is what makes me unique.

After your client buys a boat, how do

you help them enjoy their new toy?

When the deal is sealed, the relationship with that client transforms to a long-term friendship. I get personally attached to my clients and their families, because that’s my Latin nature. Inviting clients to events, company parties, boat shows, and even to the office for a morning coffee are things I do. People who purchase these “toys” are accustomed to first-class services and attention, and I like to reinforce that in their minds. Every time I have exciting industry news or a new product to share I make sure they get them right away before they see it elsewhere. As soon as clients as-sociate me with yachts, then I’ve done a great job branding myself. I’m constantly in the Key Biscayne sand bar, and some-thing I’ve done a couple of times is take pictures of their boats if we coincide that day at the flats, and e-mail them the pic-tures. They love it.

Where do you enjoy boating and what do you do on the water?

Boating to me is defined by three activi-ties: scuba diving, fishing, and entertain-ing. Many of my friends from childhood own boats and we’re most weekends in the Key Biscayne sand bar, or Nixon Flats. We usually go scuba diving early in the morning and finish the day off at the sand bar entertaining with friends. Bimini is

always an option on long weekends if the weather permits it, but Miami is definitely a great place for boating. I have cruised with friends and family most of the Bahamas, and of course most of the northern coast of my home country; Colombia. New boat-ers are fun to deal with because they’re teachable; just like a little kid learning a new sport. I like educating new boaters and teaching them the basics of boating, especially what NOT to do.

Final Comments about yourself:

I started in this business by accident. Bertram Yachts, a Ferretti Group Company nowadays hired me for a summer intern-ship in the marketing department during summer of 2007. Bertram had always been an iconic brand for me, and it still is, and it was that internship that directed me towards becoming a broker in the boating industry. I became a licensed broker in Oc-tober 2007, and sold two boats during my last semester of college at the University of Miami. I immediately saw the business potential. Initially wanting to go into bank-ing or real estate, I saw no banks or real estate firms were hiring during 2009, so I emerged myself in the boating industry. It was tough at the beginning, but I man-aged to close three yachts during De-cember 2009 from the comfort of my own room, and how the saying goes: “The Rest is History.”
