Introduction

This teacher’s package is meant for the second year of HAVO/VWO. The aim of this book project is to enthuse students for reading and to help them think outside the box. Since not every student is interested in reading and we would like to get them involved, we have created a package whereby activities regarding the subjects of Science and Art are included.

Firstly we start off with the pre- reading activity, which includes the theme of the book which relates to Halloween. Secondly, the while reading activities entail all the chapters of the book and a variety of subjects. The topics that will be discussed are Fortune & Fame, Science & Solutions for potions and Art & Creative Writing.

We will take 6 weeks to complete the book and the book’s activities. Week 7 will be used to present the awards. The weeks will be scheduled as follows:

Week CoveringWeek 1 Pre reading activities.

Week 2 - 5 While reading activities.

Week 6 Post reading activity. Presentation monsters and the prize giving award.

Week 1: Pre reading activity To motivate and enthuse the students for the book, we introduce Halloween music sound effects. We will be using the following video, when the students enter the class. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9v7anxC4W0)

After the students sit down and they pay attention, the music will be lowered and used as background music.

Activity 1: Discussion between teacher and students about the book. Video clip to introduce Stitch head (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONIihN5fgMY). Following this the students will be asked to gather the following information about the theme.

InformationWhat is the theme of the book?

Why do you think that is?

To which American celebration does it relate to?

What do you know about this American celebration?

Collect the class answers in a class discussion.

Prologue This poem will be used as an introduction to the book. The students will be asked to read the prologue on their own, at first. After they have done this, the poem will be read out by the teacher.

Tommy Trump, upon a hill,Trumped a smell that made him ill. Did his best to find a looWithin the walls of Grotteskew. In went Tommy through the gate,And there he met his awful fate.So if you feel a trump a comin’ Run back home to Grubbers Nubbin!

Ask the students: What did you understand from the poem? Give the students time to discuss and / or change their mind about their book

prediction. Do you want to add or change your thoughts about the theme of the book, now you

have read the prologue?

Homework Read chapters 1 – 5 Stitch Head.

Research How do you think the author was inspired by writing this book? Try to find this

online. If you cannot, then use your own thoughts and imagination. Is the way people celebrate Halloween nowadays, the same as how it was intended?

Do a small research about the history of Halloween. Write ten sentences about your findings.

Week 2: While reading activity; Chapter 1 – 5

Book activity, the next four weeksCreate your own monster. The upcoming four weeks, you will create your own monster and write a story about your creature. You can create your own monster how you like. Your teacher of art will be helping to set this up during your project hours.

The following exercises in the coming weeks are to be collected as your portfolio of your very own monster.

You will be presenting your monster in the final week and awarded prizes for the best story and the best monster.

FOR EXAMPLE: A MONSTER NAMED STITCH HEAD

My name is Stitch Head. I have two feet and two arms. I am made out of bits and pieces of spare parts the professor managed to find. I am bold and have a lot of stitches. People think I am scary and hideous, but the fact is that I try to be good and don`t want to scare anyone.I have been living in an abandoned castle for a long time. I was created by a scientist who loved to create new monsters. I was his first invention. But one day I was so upset with him. He didn`t know who I was and by that time someone knocked on the door. He told me his name was Freakfinder. We became friends, or so I thought..........After a few times, us having met each other, Freakfinder proposed something to me. He said I would be the most famous of famous of all. And I believed him........

In 5 weeks you will present your monster to the class. You can present your monster how you like but you will be awarded for:

Originality; Relation to the book; Your presentation.

You will be building your monster with various exercises in the next few weeks. These you need to hand in as your story of your monster. Your story will be marked by;

Grammar and spelling; Word order; Originality.

Activity 7

“WHOOO ARE YOUUUU ???”

In the last activities you looked at descriptions of monsters and how you described your own monster.  Your monster needs a background as well.

Everybody has a story. Your monster does as well. Stitchhead was created by the professor. He lives in the castle in the deepest, darkest, dankest corner of Castle Grotteskew. All he wants is to be left alone so he can brew his potions to help cure the professor’s monstrous creations. He has no friends, except one…. Or does he?Last week you described your monster. But now your monster needs a background as well.

Answer these questions in your description of your monster.1. Where did your monster come from?

- Was it born, created or perhaps summoned?

2. Where does it live / haunt or exist?

3. Is it alone? In a pack?, part or a swarm or horde? Or …… something else?

4. Add any further spooky, creepy, evil or nasty details that you also want to for your best description of your monster.

Homework Read chapters 6 – 9 Stitch Head.

Answer Key for the TeacherThe students will do their own experiments. The teacher makes sure that a group consists out of 4 or 5 students. Every group will do their own experiment. There are 7 experiments to divide. The idea of this exercise is to combine the English language with Science. You could ask a Science or Biology teacher to help you out with these experiments. The teacher provides the materials, such as vinegar, salt, tea etc. (take a look at the different samples and underneath the header “what you need”, there is a list of all the ingredients. The questions are up to interpretation of the groups of students. It depends what their observation will be.

Individual Exercise Has your monster been betrayed? Maybe that is why it is so angry, noisy, bloodthirsty or dangerous. Write here what you see as any betrayal that your monster has had in its life.

Answer Key for the TeacherPart A.Question one and two are referring to stereotypes. Fairy tales and children stories usually stereotype the good and bad as being beautiful and ugly. Think of snow white or sleeping beauty. The dashing prince, the evil queen or the wicked witch.

The monsters are given good qualities such as manners, politeness and articulation. Even though they look fearsome and ugly.

The humans are dangerous and angry such as the mob or devious and lying as in Freakfinder. Both having bad qualities.

Betrayal is the act of not doing what they promise. Also doing what they should not or what is not expected of them, in a bad way.

Part B.Group one. Prologue, Arabella (the little girl) and Freakfinder.Freakfinder kidnaps the little girl by putting her in a sackand takes her to the castle also to part of his scheme to get the villagers to attack the castle.

Group two. The professor and Stitchhead. The professor has forgotten both stitchhead and his promise to stitchhead. Stitchhead has not but always has hope that the doctor will remember him and his promise.

Group three. Freakfinder and Stitchhead at the door.Freakfinder lies to Stitchhead to get him to open the door and let him in. He tells him many lies to try and get him to believe his stories about fame and fortune for Stitchhead.

Group four. Freakfinder and Grubber Nubbin.Freakfinder lies to the village about the fate of Arabella. They get angry and form a mob to destroy the castle, the monsters and the professor based on the lies told by Freakfinder.Betrayal is a bad trait. It is not nice or honest and usually involves hurting one or more people because of the lies told. It is usually selfish to benefit the betrayer.

“WHAT DO YOUUUUU WANT?”

(Monster motives)Everyone (or thing) wants someone or something. For example:Stitchhead wants the professor to be his friend again. He keeps the professor safe from his own creations and from the possibility of an angry mob from Grubbers Nubbin coming to harm them all at the castle. He cares for his friend, even when his friend has forgotten him.

What does your monster want? Life, love, liberty, longevity? A portal, a friend, New York, world domination? Revenge, victims or just blood?

Write what your monster wants, (his motivation) for your monster here. You will need to add this to your monster portfolio for your presentation next week.
