Unprecedented Audio Performance

Trilateral Sound DevelopmentYamaha set ambitious goals for the soundperformance of the RX-Z11, and succeeded inachieving them through a trilateral sounddevelopment program. The three aspects of theprogram were technology, engineering andartistic sensitivity.

Technology refers to the technologies thatenable us to create the level of sound qualitysuitable for total audio enjoyment in the presentdigital audio era. Engineering refers toupgrading functions and specifications, whichare the foundation of the overall quality. And ofequal or perhaps even greater importance isartistic sensitivity, which is how we go beyondthe specifications to create, tune and refine thesound based on the musical acuteness of ourmost experienced audio technicians.

The result is that the RX-Z11 achieves anunprecedented level of audio performance.Sound that is not only clear and high resolution,but finely textured. Able, for example, torealistically convey the sound of light rain,rustling cloth or breaking glass. Surround soundthat is not only spacious but has a sense ofmagnificence. Sound that is not only welllocalized, but sharply focused in every area ofthe immense CINEMA DSP HD3 sound field. Andfinally, sound with an optimum balance amongthe three key elements of resonance, deep bassand responsiveness, for best compatibility withall types of sources.

11.2-Channel High Density Surround Sound(140W x 7 + 50W x 4)The RX-Z11 delivers 140W x 7 channels plus50W to the four presence and rear presencechannels. It also allows the simultaneous use oftwo subwoofers (hence 11.2 channels). Inaddition to Yamaha’s latest CINEMA DSP HD3technology for high density, incredibly detailedsurround sound, it provides extensive zonecustomization functions, enabling the 11 ampchannels to be allocated to zones 2, 3 and 4 invarious configurations.

Digital ToP-ART and High CurrentAmplificationYamaha’sDigital ToP-ART designconceptensures thatthe receiver isfully capableof handlingthetransmissionof highvolume digitalsound data atspeeds up to192kHz. Theinterior layoutthoroughlyisolates thedigital, analogand videosections andprovides theshortest

possible signal routes. Toachieve the quality demandedby the latest losslesscompression formats receivedvia HDMI bitstream transmission, circuit boarddesigns were radically revised and partsselection was reevaluated. The RX-Z11’ssuperior parts include Burr-Brown DSD1796DACs, an op amp, custom-made 27,000µFblock capacitors and Schottky barrier diodes. AVariable Volume Control helps provide the bestpossible S/N ratio. High Current Amplificationcircuitry achieves high current power with lowimpedance for superior amplifier performance.

Super Stable Chassis DesignThe internal chassis design uses an ultra-rigidRahmen structure, which is a series of H-shapedframes. This rectangular structure secures andisolates the parts sections, while reducingvibration to a negligible amount. The externalchassis walls are thick (5/8”) and heavy.

High Sound Quality: Preamplifier Stage

New Pure Direct ConceptFor the RX-Z11, Yamaha has upgraded itspopular Pure Direct feature. It now provideshigher sound quality from lossless audio formatsdigitally transmitted via HDMI, while stillensuring optimum quality from CD and analogaudio sources. It allows the enjoyment of two-channel CD output, multi-channel Super AudioCD and DVD-Audio output, and even Blu-ray,HD-DVD and other HD sources.

Pure Ground DAC ConceptThe DACs, vital determinants of digital audioquality, are placed on the analog circuit board,preventing the large ground potential differencesthat can occur whenthe digital and analogsections are far apart.Furthermore, the DACsare connected directlyto the power supply toavoid degradation oflow level signals. Thishelps to maximize bothtwo-channel and multi-channel audioperformance.

High Quality Preamplifier Block DesignThe printed circuit boards are located very closeto each other. This hasthe advantages ofminimizing signalpaths, shorteningsignal loops andimproving noiseisolation from othercircuits.

Low-Jitter PLL and Digital Clock CircuitsThe preamplifier stage incorporates both a low-jitter PLL circuit and a VCXO digital clock circuit,significantly reducing jitter from digital inputs sosound processing can be accomplished withoutbeing affected by jitter. This is particularlyeffective in improving the sound quality of digitalsignals that are input via HDMI.

High Sound Quality: Power Amplifier Stage

All Channel Current Feedback CircuitThe power amplifier uses current rather thanvoltage for feedback in all channels. Becausethere is virtually no phase shift, phasecompensation can be kept to a minimum. Thiscontributes to the RX-Z11’s excellent transientresponse,allowsfrequencyresponse toremainunchangedeven when thegain changes,and creates awarmer,texture-richsound.

Hybrid Low NoisePower SupplyA highly efficient DC-DC converter andextra-large transformeris used for the digitalcircuit, which requireshigh current input, anda low noise powersupply circuit for theanalog audio circuit. Anindependent currentpower path is providedfor the speaker relaysand display.

Symmetrical Layout and New Power Circuit LayoutThe heavy power transformer (over 22lbs.!) is inthe center with the heat sinks on either side toensure equal weightdistribution. The powercircuit layout separatesthe video and digitalaudio section from theanalog audio section toeliminate adverseinfluences, anddistances betweencircuits and powersupplies were shortened to avoid high currentloop problems.

Thick Aluminum Panels and Large, Heavy FeetThick aluminum panelsare used throughout toprevent vibration andmaintain highperformance audioreproduction. Thelarge, heavy feet alsoserve to dampenexternal vibrations.

HDMI 1.3a CompatibilityThe RX-Z11 is compatible withthe newest version of the HDMIstandard, 1.3a, providing the benefits of DeepColor (30/36bit) and the xvYCC color standard.Digital video and audio signals can betransmitted via a single HDMI cable and itaccepts the losslessaudio formats DolbyTrueHD and DTSMaster Audio. Thereare five HDMI inputs,one of which is on thefront panel, as well astwo HDMI outputs thatallow images to besimultaneouslydisplayed from twodevices, such as a flatpanel monitor and aprojector. HDMI 1.3ameans the RX-Z11 canhandle the high1080p/24Hz resolutionof Blu-ray Discs, andalso provides an AutoLip-Sync function that automatically adjusts thelag between video and audio and a doublespeed Refresh Rate of 120Hz.

xvYCC Color SpaceWhen you use the RX-Z11’s HDMI outputs totransmit video signals, you enjoy spectacularcolor performance.One reason is thatHDMI 1.3a uses a newcolor standard calledxvYCC, which supports1.8 times as manycolors as previousHDTV signals. Thisexpanded range ofcolors means thatHDTVs can displayimages with colors that are far more natural andvivid than ever before.

that are input via analog video to 1080p; it canalso downscale these signals to 480p, allowingthe audio signal suited to the monitor to beoutput vertically without restriction. Digitalsignals input from HDMI can be similarly up anddownscaled, so optimum images can beselected from the HD output from Blu-ray Discplayers or HD-DVD players. It also performshigh precision processing with two engines: ahigh performance i/p converter with 10bitcalculation capability and a Scaler made byAnchor Bay Technologies.

Advanced Features

Network Receiver CapabilitiesLike other Yamaha network receivers, the RX-Z11 can be connected to a PC or Yamaha MCX-2000, and can access Internet Radio via a LAN.It supports the LAN standby mode, allowing anexternal controller to send commands via anethernet link. Two USB ports are provided, onthe front and rear, with 500mA power support. Itis compatible with PlaysForSure devices,Windows Vista, Yamaha Music CAST andvarious audio Codecs such as MP3, WMA, WAVand MPEG4 AAC.

Advanced YPAO Sound Optimization Auto SetupYamaha’s YPAO Sound Optimization systemanalyzes the room acoustics and various systemfactors, then makes adjustments to provideoptimum sound quality. It addition to theprevious adjustmentsfor speaker size,distance and wiring,plus equalization andlevel, this AdvancedYPAO has four newcapabilities. The first ismeasurement atmultiple locations (upto eight). It does notaverage the results butperforms analysis weighted in accordance withthe state of each location to calculatecompensation values. This results in a larger“sweet spot” at the listening position. Thesecond is the use of parametric equalization tocancel the effects of standing waves, whichdegrade low range response. The third isspeaker angle measurements to optimizeCINEMA DSP effects. And the fourth is an EasyStarter feature that activates YPAO when themicrophone is inserted and the Enter button ispressed, with information shown on the display.

The presence, rearpresence and EXTD (by surround back amp)speaker terminals can be assigned to eachzone. It provides Intelligent Power AmplifierAssignability (surround back amp assignment)and Independent Zone Amplifier Assignmentwith 7.2-channel main zone playback.

Also important is that Zone 2 can acceptbitstream signals and also offers componentvideo output and upconversion of compositeand S-Video signals.

Some other convenient zone functionsinclude: a Party Mode that permits audio BGMand video BGV play of the same input source inthe main room and other three zones with one-button operation, a Zone OSD function that letsyou browse information about the songs orAM/FM/XM/HD radio broadcasts that areplaying, Zone Mono that provides compatibilitywith one-speaker or three-speaker installationenvironments, and a Preamplifier Mode thatpermits the entire 11-channel amplifier to beallotted for three-zone use (main zone poweredby an external amp).

Dual +12V Trigger OutsThe GUI menu can beused to help set up two+12V trigger outs tosynchronize zonepower status and zoneinput source. Thismakes setting the+12V triggers easy foranyone.

CINEMA DSP HD3

The RX-Z11 introduces Yamaha’s latest digitalsound field processing refinement: CINEMA DSP

HD3. As amazing as the systems on the RX-Z9and RX-V3800 were, this system marks a furtherevolution of CINEMA DSP. It utilizes four QuadCINEMA DSP engines and permits losslessdecoding of 192kHz signals, while providing 3Dprocessing that gives the sound field an extravertical dimension. In its full 11-channelconfiguration setting it adds two presence andtwo rear presence speakers, offering theenjoyment of a completely new sound stage.

THX Ultra2 Plus Surround ModeTHX Ultra2 Plus includes the newestTHX Loudness Plus technology. It letsyou enjoy five THX programs in theoptimum condition, delivering a more accuratelistening experience at any volume level.

Improved Compressed Music EnhancerThis popular feature restores the sound of theoriginal music from digitally compressed formatssuch as MP3. The RX-Z11 offersan improved version thatprocesses multi-channel signalswith a DSP algorithm, so all channels (ratherthan just two) are enhanced, for more accuratereproduction and a more expansive sound.

HD Radio™ TunerThe RX-Z11 is equipped withan HD Radio™ tuner. HDRadio, the only digitalbroadcast system in America approved by theFCC, offers crystal-clear, CD-quality sound viaexisting AM/FM bands. In addition, it providesprogram-associateddata and the ability totune to multipleprograms at the samedial position. The RX-Z11 can display HDRadio information onthe front panel and ona monitor.

XM Satellite Radio Ready with XM HD SurroundThe RX-Z11 is XM Satellite Radioready, for reception of digitalmusic, news, sports, talk andentertainment stations. It is alsocapable of receiving XM SatelliteRadio with XM HD Surroundpowered by Neural-THX Surround, which alsosupports gaming and movies with 7.1-channelsound. To receive XM Satellite Radio, the XMMini-Tuner and Home Dock including homeantenna are required (sold separately).
