    used to lock the steering. The various

    positions are described below.

    This indicator light comes on when the

    transmission is in the neutral position.

    This indicator light flashes when theturn signal switch is pushed to the left

    or right.

    Fuel level warning light

    This warning light comes on when thefuel level drops below approximately

    3.5 L (0.8 Imp gal, 0.9 US gal). When

    this occurs, refuel as soon as possible.

    The electrical circuit of the warning light

    can be checked according to the fol-

    lowing procedure.1. Turn the key to ON.

    2. If the warning light does not come

    on for a few seconds, then go off,

    Oil level/coolant temperature

    warning light

    This warning light has the following

    three functions.

    When the engine oil level is low,

    the warning light comes on and

    When the coolant temperature is

    too high, the warning light comes

    on and symbol flashes. Stopthe motorcycle and allow it to idle

    until the coolant temperature goes

    down. If the temperature does not

    go down, stop the engine. (See

    the Engine overheating section

    on page 6-48 for further instruc-

    tions.)

    When the engine oil level is low

    and the coolant temperature is too

    high, the warning light comes on

    The electrical circuit of the warning light

    This model is equipped with a self-di-agnosis device for the following electri-

    cal circuits:

    Clutch leverThe clutch lever is located at the left

    handlebar grip. To disengage the

    clutch, pull the lever toward the handle-

    bar grip. To engage the clutch, release

    the lever. The lever should be pulled

    rapidly and released slowly for smooth

    clutch operation.

    it 1/4 turn clockwise. The lock will be re-

    leased and the fuel tank cap can be

    opened.

    less the key is in the lock. In addition,the key cannot be removed if the cap is

    um unleaded fuel. Use of unleaded fuel

    will extend spark plug life and reduce

    maintenance costs.

    ethanol can be used if the ethanol con-

    The ignition circuit cut-off system (com-prising the sidestand switch, clutch

    switch and neutral switch) has the fol-

    lowing functions.

    It prevents starting when the trans-

    mission is in gear and the side-

    4-PRE OPERATION CHECKS

    The condition of a vehicle is the owners responsibility. Vital components can start to deter

    even if the vehicle remains unused (for example, as a result of exposure to the elements). A

    of tire air pressure could have serious consequences. Therefore, it is very important, in addtion, to check the following points before each ride.

    4. Start the engine by pushing the

    start switch.

    NOTE:@

    If the engine fails to start, release the

    start switch, wait a few seconds, and

    then try again. Each starting attempt

    should be as short as possible to pre-

    serve the battery. Do not crank the en-gine more than 10 seconds on any one

    attempt.@

    5. After starting the engine, move the

    starter (choke) lever back halfway.ECA00055

    CAUTION:@

    For maximum engine life, always

    warm the engine up before starting

    off. Never accelerate hard when the

    engine is cold!

    NOTE:@

    The engine is warm when it responds

    normally to the throttle with the starter(choke) turned off. To avoid the possi-

    bility of excessive exhaust emissions,

    never leave the starter (choke) on long-

    er than necessary. The time necessary

    for starter (choke) use depends upon

    the ambient temperature. Tempera-tures above 50 F (10 C) require about

    10 seconds of starter (choke) use and

    temperatures below 50 F (10 C) re-

    quire about 3.5 seconds with the starter

    (choke) turned on, then about 2.5 min-

    utes with the starter (choke) in the half-

    way position.@

    brakes to slow the motorcycle.

    2. Shift the transmission into first

    gear when the motorcycle reaches

    25 km/h (15.5 mi/h). If the engine

    is about to stall or runs very rough-

    Tire inspection

    Always check the tires before operating

    the motorcycle. If a tire tread shows

    crosswise lines (minimum tread depth),

    if the tire has a nail or glass fragments

    in it, or if the side wall is cracked, con-

    tact a Yamaha dealer immediately and

    have the tire replaced.

    WARNING_

    It is dangerous to ride with a

    worn-out tire. When a tire tread

    begins to show crosswise lines,

    have a Yamaha dealer replace

    the tire immediately.

    lower the boiling point of the fluid

    and may result in vapor lock.

    Brake fluid may deteriorate paint-

    ed surfaces or plastic parts. Al-

    ways clean up spilled fluid

    immediately. As the brake pads wear, it is nor-

    mal for the brake fluid level to

    gradually go down. However, if the

    brake fluid level goes down sud-

    denly, have a Yamaha dealer

    check the cause.

    Changing the brake fluidHave a Yamaha dealer change the

    sealed-type (MF) battery, which doesnot require any maintenance. There is

    no need to check the electrolyte or to

    add distilled water.

    To charge the battery

    Have a Yamaha dealer charge the bat-tery as soon as possible if it seems to

    have discharged. Keep in mind that the

    battery tends to discharge more quickly

    if the motorcycle is equipped with op-

    tional electrical accessories.

    centerstand, follow these precautionswhen removing the front and rear

    wheel or performing other mainte-

    nance requiring the motorcycle to

    stand upright. Check that the motor-

    cycle is in a stable and level position
