Corporate philosophy and vision

The 21st century is said to be the“centuryof environmental awareness,”as people mustcope with numerous environmental issues thatare faced by mankind today; from global warm-ing to waste disposal, environmental pollutionand resource depletion. Since its establ ishment in 1906, theYamatake Group has been contributing toenergy and resource conservation for cus-tomers and society at large by uti l iz ingadvanced measurement and control technolo-gies for process/factory automation and build-ing automation. The oil shock in the 1970’scompelled us to constitute our corporate phi-losophy of“Savemation,”a term derived fromsaving through automation. In 1996 we insti-tuted our corporate vision of“realizing a worldthat is easier both on people and the environ-ment,”and expressed within the Group and tothe public our firm commitment to promotingharmony between people and the environment,and contributing to a better quality of life andglobal environmental conservation. In 2001

the Yamatake Group Environmental Charterwas formulated, which declared that all theGroup’s corporate activities in Japan and over-seas contribute to the formation of an environ-mentally sustainable and recycling-orientedsociety.

ment, we are reducing the environmentalimpact of all our corporate activities, anddeveloping innovative solutions that help cus-tomers and society to reduce their environ-mental impact.It is our mission and duty to support cus-

tomers and society in solving their environ-mental issues through products, services andsolutions employing Yamatake’s measurementand control technologies and knowledge, suchas Microflow sensors, Topological Case-Based Modeling, and energy conservation. Weare therefore conducting all our businessactivities in line with our commitment to realiz-ing our corporate vision.

For a company to survive into the future, itneeds to coexist in harmony with society.Therefore, fulfilling our corporate social respon-sibility is an important management issue. InApril 2003 we established the Business Con-duct Office, which enabled us to reinforce thecompany’s culture as well as strengthen cor-porate ethics, compliance, governance, andsocial contribution. We will aggressively pro-mote and expand these activities.

Improving the EnvironmentalManagement System

In April 2003 three Yamatake Group compa-nies were merged into a single corporation.Soon after, we began the work of integratingthe six environmental management systemsoperating separately in Yamatake Corporation,two in-house companies and three manufactur-ing sites. The unification was completed inFebruary 2004. We also took this opportunityto formulate the Yamatake Corporation Envi-ronmental Policy, which clearly states ourcommitment to become an environmentallyadvanced company. To realize this, we will takethe lead in reducing the environmental impactof all our corporate activities as well as devel-op innovative solutions that help customersand society to reduce the environmentalimpact of their activities. It is hoped that everyYamatake employee engages in his/her workwith an environmentally aware mindset.

Reducing the environmental impact ofour activities

Our accomplishments in fiscal 2003 includethe achievement of zero emissions for theShonan factory, and the introduction of ourfirst service to be certified with the Environ-mental Labeling. We are also making progress in the develop-ment of technologies for lead-free solderingand soldering equipment for production. Recently, the reduction of regulated chemi-cal substances has become a critical issue.To prepare for the European RoHS Directiveprohibiting the use of harmful chemical sub-stances in electrical and electronic equipment,we have formed company-wide project teamsfor creating and managing a database ofchemical substances used in our products,and eliminating regulated chemical sub-stances.

Responding to environmental issues

As a leading manufacturer of measurementand control, Yamatake has for many yearsbeen contributing to environmental preserva-tion by providing products and services thatconserve energy and resources in buildings,

plants and factories. We have been expandingour environmental solution offerings to betterrespond to the environmental issues of ourcustomers and society. To strengthen our environmental solutions,we are promoting the model factory for envi-ronmental conservation, in which Yamatake’sown technologies and products are applied,and their capabilities in energy and resourceconservation and waste reduction are evaluat-ed. In fiscal 2003 we installed biodegradinggarbage disposal unitsーstill under develop-mentーat several of our domestic factories.After achieving satisfactory results in-house,the product is ready for delivery to the cus-tomer. This is the sort of verification cycle weare aiming to establish.Designating our Fujisawa factory as a modelfor environmental conservation, we have beenshowcasing our energy-saving solutionsthrough factory tours for customers and thepublic, and have received good evaluations.We are certain that such activities will enableus to better respond to the environmentalissues of our customers and society.

At Yamatake, an environmental management strategy was drawn up asone of its management strategies. Our mid-term targets for realizingthis strategy were summarized in our mid-term action plan and extendedinto the objectives and targets set by each subsidiary and in-housecompany, as well as in the business plans by each department.In fiscal 2003 we made improvements in our environmental manage-ment system, implemented measures against harmful chemical sub-stances, and promoted energy and resource conservation.In fiscal 2004 these activities will be enhanced further and evolve intoour environmental solutions business of providing products, servicesand solutions that help customers solve their environmental issues.

The Envi-ronmental Protection Office propos-es various measures, which are pro-moted and incorporated after accep-tance. ■ Environmental Promotion Structure

With the integration of the six envi-ronmental management systemsoperating separately in YamatakeCorporation, two in-house companiesand three manufacturing sites, wehave instituted a new environmentalpolicy that declares the direction ofYamatake’s environmental manage-ment. Guided by a single environ-mental policy, we are drawing upcompany-wide environmental objec-tives and targets for further improve-ment in environmental management.

Environmental management is the incorporation of an environmental pol-icy in a company’s management, and the promotion of activities for envi-ronmental preservation based on the environmental policy and Plan-Do-Check-Action cycle. It begins with the creation and implementation ofan environmental management plan, followed by internal and externalaudits to check the effectiveness of the plan, and a review of theresults of its environmental performance. This“PDCA cycle”aims tocontinuously improve environmental performance, such as reducing theenvironmental impact of our operations, and lowering and preventingenvironmental risk.

Since establishing its environmental design guidelines in 1997,Yamatake has been actively promoting the manufacture of productsthat are environmentally conscious at every stage of the product’s life-cycle: from new product development and design through to production,application and disposal. In addition, to comply with more stringent envi-ronmental regulations based on a European directive, in fiscal 2003, weestablished new regulations for the management of chemical sub-stances and reviewed criteria for managing harmful chemical sub-stances.

To promote the development of environmentally con-scious products, the Yamatake Group has been assess-ing product design in eight categories* based on its Envi-ronmental Design Guidelines since 1997. In its assess-ment in fiscal 2003, the Group improved resource conser-vation and ease of disposal by 31.9% and 17.3%, respec-tively.*The eight categories are energy conservation, resource conservation, environ-mental friendliness, extended service life, reusability/recyclability, ease of dis-posal, packaging materials, and information provision.

Environmental Design AssessmentLCA is a comprehensive evaluation method of quantita-tively measuring the environmental impact generated atevery stage of a product’s lifecycle; from the procurementof raw materials through to manufacture, use, transport,and disposal. Since 1999 we have been expanding thenumber of products to be evaluated. Shown below areLCA results of the Infilex AC air conditioning controller.Compared to previous products, the new Infilex ACreduced its environmental impact by 34%.

Evaluation by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

In April 2001 the Yamatake Group introduced its origi-nal environmental labeling system in compliance with ISO14021, and has been disclosing environmental informa-tion about its products. We adopted the type II environ-mental labeling, also called“self-declared environmentallabeling.”In fiscal 2003, twelve products were certifiedwith the environmental labeling. Two of those productsare shown on page 8.

● SDC Series Digital Indicating ControllerYamatake’s SDC series digital indicating controllers are

built on years of experience in advanced technologies forcombustion/temperature control. The compact SDC 15controller, released in fiscal 2003, has the shortest bodydepth of all digital controllers on the market. It features a40% reduction in volume, 25% reduction in mass, and13% less energy usage than previous models. The SDCcontroller reduces its environmental impact through bothenergy and resource conservation.

Products Certified with the Environmental Labeling● Harmonas-FLeX Distributed Controller The Harmonas-FLeX Controller brings genuine processcontrol on site with a programmable display built into itsfront panel for graphic monitoring and control by touch-panel operation. It consumes 40% less energy and usesonly half the materialscompared to previousmodels. Its body is con-structed from sheetmetal , which can beseparated easily fromits base for improvedease of recycling. Suchfeatures make the Har-monas-FLeX friendly toboth users and theenvironment.

To prevent energy waste in air-conditioning, industrialfurnaces, compressor power, and utility equipments,Yamatake offers energy-saving solutions for optimummanagement of energy usage of buildings and facto-ries. This comprehensive program begins with a thor-ough examination of the energy consumed, using suchmethods as energy measurement and cost analysis, fol-

Reduction of Environmental Impact at our Factories

All Yamatake factories are taking the initiative in the prevention of glob-al warming and waste reduction, which are considered as critical issuesin environmental conservation. To contribute to preventing global warm-ing, we have been actively involved in the reduction of CO2 emissions asour top priority. At the same time, efforts are being made to reduce thevolume of waste for final disposal and raise our recycling rate, as weaim to utilize resources more efficiently and establish a recycling-basedsociety.

“We will implement measures for environmental impactreduction not only within our company but also incooperation with local companies and municipalities.”

In 1999 an energy conservation taskteam was organized at each domesticfactory to carry out energy-saving mea-sures for power source, air conditioning,electric equipment and lighting. Byinstalling an energy monitoring systemto track the performance of these ener-gy-saving measures, we could easilygrasp its results, which in fact werequite remarkable. Due to Yamatake’s business reorgani-

zation in fiscal 2003, a developmentdepartment with 130 persons and theirequipments were transferred to a facto-ry. Expecting a surge in power consump-tion, we immediately implemented a vari-ety of energy-saving measures, such asreplacing 150 CRT displays with energy-saving LCD displays. And due to anunusually cool summer and the powershortage crisis, CO2 emissions of alldomestic factories decreased by 2.0%from the previous fiscal year.

Prevention of Global Warming

In fiscal 2003, with the rising price ofsteel scraps, we expanded the scrap-ping and separating of parts for salerather than disposal. Additional activi-ties were increasing awareness ofwaste separation among employees,promoting the use of sol id fuels,installing more biodegrading garbagedisposal units, and promoting the reuseof office equipment as well as personalcomputers. Thanks to such efforts, infiscal 2003 we achieved a recyclingrate of 95%, up 7% from the previousfiscal year, which almost reached ourtarget for this fiscal year. However, withchanges in office layouts caused by thebusiness reorganization, we disposed ofa large amount of office equipment anddocuments, thereby increasing our totalvolume of waste generated. On theother hand, the Shonan factory accom-plished zero emissions of waste for finaldisposal in this fiscal year.

Yamatake’s Corporate Citizenship Promotion Office was set up withinthe General Affairs Department and has implemented two initiativesbased on a voluntary structure: First, supporting the activities ofemployees who are strongly motivated to take part in corporate citizen-ship, and second, the planning and promotion of a voluntary program forhuman resources development. We are aiming to develop and revitalizethe individual as well as our neighboring areas and society throughemployee activities. One of our goals is for the employee to apply theresults of these initiatives to his/her work.

Corporate Citizenship Activities● 8th“Mt. Oyama Clean Up”CampaignThis annual clean up was launched as part of our GlobalEnvironment Campaign marking Yamatake’s 90th anniver-sary (in 1996). Hosted by members from our Isehara fac-tory, this year’s clean up gathered 190 volunteers includ-ing Yamatake employees and their family members aswell as participants from partner companies.

● Tour of model factory for envi-ronmental conservationThe Fujisawa factory, a model forenvironmental conservation, holdsa factory tour every month toshowcase its energy-saving capa-bilities. These tours are consideredexcellent opportunities for commu-nicating directly with personsinvolved in energy conservation atother companies. They are alsoused for promoting environmentalpreservation activities and corpo-rate citizenship to elementaryschool students and foreign visi-tors as well.

Environmental Communications

Environmental education for elementary school studentsStudents from a local elementary school took partin the factory tour as part of their environmental edu-cation, which covered the importance of energy con-servation as well as safety, health, and waste dis-posal. The students’high level of environmentalawareness was evident from the various questionsthey asked throughout the tour.

Energy-saving projects abroadEngineers from Turkey’s National Energy Conserva-tion Center participated in the factory tour as part ofa seminar sponsored by the Energy ConservationCenter of JICA, Japan International CooperationAgency. The visitors were impressed by Yamatake’senergy conservation activities, especially with theLeak Detector II, Yamatake’s ultrasonic air leakagedetector.
