Term 4
Week 1
Principal’s News
Welcome back for Term 4. This term always seems to go so quickly as we have lots
of things happening, please check the newsletter and we will also send out
communications through Class Dojo and School Stream.
We have a few changes for the beginning of this term. Mrs Foley is on leave for the
first three weeks and I will be relieving as principal. We welcome Miss Vidler back
from her wonderful overseas holiday and she will relieve as Assistant Principal in
Stage One. Mrs Edwards has returned from her position as Relieving Principal at
Cabbage Tree Island School and she will be working on a writing program with Years
3-6. Mrs Reeves will be on leave for the rest of the year and Mrs McFarlane will be in
the office. Unfortunately, during the holidays, Mrs Hogan had a fall
and broke her foot. Mrs Ros Brown will be teaching 6H for the rest of
the year. Thank you Mrs Brown.
This week we have Life Education, better known as Healthy Harold
coming to visit. These lessons form part of our PD/ Health program
and they are always enjoyed by the students. The cost is $10 and
this can be paid in cash or online.
In week 3 our school has nominated to participate in a Platform Readiness Test to
ensure the functionality of the NAPLAN when it moves online in 2018. This is a
national test with a small number of schools in each state participating. Mrs Cook
will be assisting us with this and Year 4 and Year 6 will complete the online tests. This
is an opportunity for both staff and students to be well prepared for these tests in
2018.
In the same week we will celebrate Grandparents’ Day on Friday
27th October. This day recognises the important role
grandparents pay in children’s lives. We were overwhelmed with
the response last year and to enable us to organise this year’s
event we would appreciate it if you confirm your attendance when the information
note is sent home with your child. Our wonderful P&C have applied for and been
successful in obtaining a grant for this event which will see two sessions of Tai Chi
offered to students and their grandparents.
If you have not finalised your payments for the year 3 sleepover or
Year 6 Canberra excursion, please do so as soon as possible.
Enjoy your week.

To Say Thanks
On the 11th of July 2017 we received a parents most
dreaded phone call. Sasha’s Paediatrician rang to say that our baby girl has a large brain tumour and we need to take her immediately to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. And so her journey begins.
Here in Brisbane Sasha had a range of tests that indi-cated she had a very slow growing tumour and severe Hydrocephalus (Build up of brain fluid causing pressure on the brain). Her Oncologists believe that Sasha had lived happily with the tumour for many years and had learnt to compensate for the changes in her brain.
On the 15th of July our little girl was wheeled into theatre to undergo a Craniotomy to remove her tumour. What no
one could predict was that Sasha’s slow growing tumour had established a very extensive blood supply and Sasha had a catastrophic cerebral haemorrhage. The surgeons spent the next 10-12 hours trying to stop the bleed to successfully save Sasha’s life.
The last 10 weeks have seen us on a rollercoaster journey. 8 more operations and a life within the walls of the intensive care unit. On the 18
th of September after a number of tests and a lot of anguish it was decided to repeat
the Craniotomy.
After 6 hours we were given the news that the surgeons had successfully removed the tumour. The blood supply to the tumour had suffered immensely after the 1
st surgery and was no longer present. Our neurosurgeon says “mother
nature at its best” the love and prayers from all of you.
Sasha’s post-op recovery this week has been slow and complicated by Pneumonia. Each day is a baby step for-ward. Sasha’s journey will continue here at Lady Cilento Childrens Hospital and as she stabilises we will move from the Intensive Care Unit to the Neurosurgical ward for further recovery and then hopefully onto Rehabilitation.
It is unknown at this point the extent of Sasha’s injury but we can only hope with extensive rehab we will continue to move forward.
This journey is immensely hard on all of our family but most of all Sasha. She has been the strongest, bravest, most amazing little girl who continues to surprise both us and the medical team with her strength.
Our lives have been turned upside down and yet with the support from our families, friends and community, we continue to put one foot in front of the other each day and do the only thing we can and that is to love Sasha and each other.
We cannot begin to thank everyone for their support through this journey so far and we have been completely overwhelmed by it. Please accept this as our thanks for all that you do and have done. They say it takes a village to raise a child and our village has certainly stepped up to the challenge.
Forever Thankful, Tim, Ange, Zahri, Alani & Sasha Berry.
