Principal’s News Welcome back to Week 5 of Term 1. Congratulations to all students for their efforts in representing Yanco PS at the LNPSSA Swimming Carnival and LNPSSA Basketball Knockout last week. You were all excellent representatives for the school and displayed outstanding sportsmanship and behaviour at both events. Good luck to the Year 5/6 students who will participate in the LNPSSA Soccer Gala Day this week. Next week I will be out of school on Wednesday and Thursday, 6 and 7 March, attending a Primary Principal’s Conference in Griffith. School Contributions Each year the school asks for a small contribution towards the resourcing of the school. The contribution goes is $10 per term or $40 per year and goes towards stationary items for classrooms and other resources needed for subjects such as visual arts, The contribution works out at $1.00 per week and significantly assists School Excursion Planning Yanco PS is looking to change its long term excursion planning, with changes to the traditional bi-annual Year 4-6 excursion to Borambola. This change has been discussed and is supported by the Yanco P & C, who have discussed the possibility of fundraising to assist with future excursions. Please find attached a letter outlining the possible changes to future excursion planning and a short survey to assist with planning possible changes. 2015 Year 7 Application Forms This week families of students in Year 6 received a ‘Moving into Year 7 2015’ Expression of Interest Form. These forms assist public schools in organising their school requirements for the next year’s Year 7 students. These forms need to be returned to the front office by 21 March, 2014. If any parents need assistance please contact the school. School Newsletter After feedback received from the parent survey held last year it has been decided to move the publishing of the school newsletter to later in the week. From this week the school newsletter will be published and sent home with students every Thursday. Schools Clean Up Day Tomorrow Yanco PS will participate in Schools Clean Up Day as part of Clean Up Australia events. Since 1992, school communities across Australia have demonstrated their support for caring for the environment through participating in Schools Clean Up Day, with over 2,400 schools each year taking part. Students will clean up within the school, as well as the streets surrounding the schools vicinity. Vibe 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge Yesterday students in Year 3-6 attended the Vibe 3on3 Basketball and Hip Hop Challenge, which was held at the Leeton Stadium. Students competed in a number of Vibe 3on3 events, including basketball, art (painting), dancing (break dancing/hip hop dancing) and rapping.

Merit Award System After consultation with the P & C and school staff, a new Merit Award system will be phased in during Terms 1 and 2, with plans for it to be fully implemented at the beginning of Term3. Students began receiving Achievement Awards last week, with all students who attended the Small Schools Swimming Carnival, LNPSSA Swimming carnival, Infants Aquatics Fun Day and LNPSSA Basketball Knockout being rewarded with an Achievement Award. Peer Reading / Home Reading Programs Students received their Home Reading Folders last week and the Peer Reading program has also commenced. From feedback received from students, many are participating in reading at home each night. Staff have told students that they do not have to read to an adult, reading to their teddy can count as home reading, as well as reading to a sibling, reading a newspaper, a magazine or an online book on an I pad. We encourage reading at home, because we love reading!

Until next week Tim Allen

News From the Office Sometimes the school requires parent’s assistance in transporting children, other than their own, to and from sporting events or small excursions in their private vehicles. It is a DEC mandatory policy that driver’s transporting children other than their own supply the school with a copy of their driver’s licence, car registration and complete a Working with Children Check – Declaration for Volunteers (available from the office). If you plan on assisting the school with transporting students, can you please bring these documents to the office. A number of parents are also yet to complete and return the ongoing General Permission Note, Media Permission Note etc. Copies of these permission notes will be sent home to these parents with students this week. Could you please assist the office by returning these notes as soon as possible?

If any of your children have a medical condition, for example asthma, we are required by the Department to have an action plan from their doctor. Please provide this information to the school office as soon as possible to enable us to update our records and treat your child accordingly. We thank you for your assistance in these matters.

Sports Report

LNPSSA Swimming Carnival The LNPSSA Swimming Carnival was held at Leeton last Friday, with a number of students qualifying to represent Small Schools. Thank you to those parents who came along to cheer on the students and assist with transport to the carnival and return. Unfortunately, no students qualified for the LNPSSA Swim Team to participate in the Riverina PSSA Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to Jack Cross and Jaite Eyles, who achieved 3rd Place as part of the Small Schools Junior Boys Relay team.

LNPSSA Basketball Knockout Last Friday students in Years 5/6 participated in the LNPSSA Basketball Knockout competition at Narrandera Stadium as part of the Small Schools teams. Well done to all who attended for their excellent behaviour and their efforts. P. and C. News

On Sunday, the P & C conducted a Car Wash, held to coincide with the monthly Yanco Markets. Thank you to the parents, and students, who assisted with washing the cars on the day. All funds raised will go towards the P & C. This year the P & C will insure all students against accidents in the school playground and during school activities, such as excursions. This policy will cover out of pocket medical expenses, such as dental work, within set limits. This is in conjunction with the school Ambulance Cover

The Golden Apple is once again supporting Yanco Public School. Please collect your shopping dockets from the Golden Apple and place in the box provided in the front office.

COMPLAINTS HANDLING POLICY All minor complaints and disputes should be resolved promptly and without using formal procedures. Whenever possible, informal resolution should be attempted first in all matters assessed as less serious. Schools – a guide for parents and carers It is best to discuss your concerns with your child's teacher first. Make an appropriate time to meet with them or phone the school and ask for an appointment with the teacher. If you are not happy with the result, or if you do not feel it is appropriate to talk to them, phone and make an appointment to discuss your concerns with the principal. You may bring a friend or relative to be your support. If you need an interpreter, we can arrange that - just ask beforehand. If your complaint is about the principal you will need to contact the school director in your area. Ask the school office staff at your school for their name and number. If your complaint cannot be resolved in an informal way, we may ask you to put it in writing. It is important that you include specific details of the situation and tell us what you would like to happen as a result of your complaint. We can help you to put your complaint in writing, if you require it. Alternatively a complaint form may also be used. Complete the form and send it to the principal, or the school director in your area.
