    RIP Michael Friedle

    Michael Edward Friedle, age 69, passed away on April 4, 2020 in Dutchess County, N.Y. Michael was born in New York City on November 14, 1950 to the late Walter P Friedle and Elsie Friedle. Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Karla Friedle of Poughkeepsie, his dear daughters Johanna Parker and her husband Michael of Brook-line, Mass. and Alice Friedle of Poughkeepsie, and his treasured grand-daughter Kaya Parker of Brookline, Mass. The eldest of four, he also leaves behind his sisters Karen Kelly and her husband Michael of Garri-son, and Laura Cothren and her husband Kenneth of Rio Grande, N.J., to which he was a loving older brother. His younger brother, Douglas Jo-seph Friedle, passed away eight years ago. He is also survived by his Aunt Hilda Schubert of Toms River NJ, four nieces and their families, and numerous cousins and relatives around the country. A Boston University graduate and Air Force veteran, he spent most of his life in the Hudson Valley where he was able to shape his passion for motorcycles into a career as a Certified Motorcycle Instructor, an organizer of rallies, and a men-tor to many, while remaining an inveterate rider himself. Michael was also a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America for over twenty years, teaching at Thunder Ridge in Patterson, NY. Michael owned an extensive collection of classic and antique BMW motorcycles, some of which were used in print advertisements through the years. His purest joy of ownership was felt during his motorcycle rides, whether with his wife or solo, touring the less traveled roads of our country. It is believed that Michael knew all the most picturesque vistas and most of the best ice cream stands in the lower 48 states, and was often asked by his family and friends for travel ad-vice. He was a proud Board member of BMW Motorcycle Owners of America (MOA) Club and was Chairman of three National BMW MOA Rallies. For 24 years he organized the much-anticipated annual summer rally for his fellow BMW enthusiasts at the "Airheads at the Aerodrome Campout," bringing riders from across the country and Canada to Wilcox Park in Dutchess County. For the past twenty years Michael was a Certified Motorcycle Safety Instructor teaching thousands of riders from beginners to advanced, including many law enforce-ment officers, how to correctly and safely handle motorcycles. He loved the feel of riding but was also adamant about personal protection, and safe defensive driving A memorial Mass will be held when it is once again safe for us to gather and cel-ebrate Michaels Life

    Good morning YB Nation! What I am about to say is the opinion of an individual and not the club. Last weekend a close friend and I tried an experiment. Could we social dis-tance and still enjoy the sport of Motorcycling. The answer was absolutely. Here were some of the key aspects. When we pulled in for gasoline, we were at separate pumps, main-taining our distance. Anything and everything we touched we had gloves on and plenty of hand sanitizer. We always had on facemask and paid attention to the local rules. When we stopped at a great haunt in Putnam, CT. The sign told us the protocol, 6 feet between people, place order, use credit card and not cash, all items were served as take out. We enjoyed great coffee, pastries in the warm sun of an out-side area set up to social distance. We followed this up with a ride to my favorite destination, the Vanilla Bean to meet some other like-minded riders. Everyone knew the drill. The Bean had adapted and set up a protocol for ordering, eating. There must have been 50 bikes in the parking lot, all paying attention. We all wore our mask, enjoyed talking about bikes and in the end, went our separate ways. So what is the conclusion one can draw? With planning, you can still go out and ride. Others will disagree and probably offer an opinion that is their right. We as motorcyclist are intelligent people whom know how to participate in a dangerous sport and stay safe. My suggestion is get out and enjoy, recharge your batteries but due it in a safe by following the suggested protocol. This virus is going to be with us for a while. It is your choice how to live while not putting others at risk. Do it safely and let the wind blow through your ears, it puts a smile on you face and you might just reduce your stress. Keep the rubber down and go ride.

    Is a Lithium Battery in

    Your Future?

    It was so nice riding after a long winter

    hibernation and forced COVID-

    19isolation. Thing is, that super bug

    can’t get you when you’re riding. When

    the wheels are spinning the pandemic

    can take a hike. You can’t even see it

    in your rearview. Sadly, all those people wearing surgical masks

    have nothing to do but shop for TP and drugs. Are we looking at a

    future where everyface is hidden bya mini tent tarp?

    When my wife and I moved to Newburyport I lost my beloved gar-

    age. My 2006 K1200R lost its home. Luckily, a new storage facility

    went up in Newbury just a few clicks away: the sign on its window

    was encouraging: “Motorcycle Storage”. A Ducati Scrambler sat

    outside with a “For Sale” sign. It belonged to the owner, so I felt

    comfy with renting a 10x10. But the bad news about self-storage is

    this: no power outlet. Why? Because the state is worried someone

    might want to live in one. Actually, I once saw a man living in one in

    San Diego, where they allow foroutlets. C’mon, leave the man

    alone. How does he hurt anyone?

    Away went my man cave; no more life-saving battery tender. Soon

    enough, my battery died. I was used to using a tender all year round

    so that was a first. Unaware of the age of my battery, I opted to buy

    a lithium versionafter some research.

    There is some negative publicity surrounding lithium. Most people

    think they catch fire easily. That may be true of lithium-ION batter-

    ies, but those you can buy for powersports vehicles (e.g., your mo-

    torcycle) are known as lithium-IRON-PHOSPHATE, (“LFP” or

    “LiFePO4”) which is proven to be a lot more chemically stable than

    lithium-ion.

    Battery tech is complex and I don’t profess to be a professor from BatteryUniversity.com (yes, a real site).

    It’s true that lithium-ironcosts more than your average Joe lead-acid

    battery:about $140 compared to $95 (fromthe Batteries Plus store).I got

    the Hyper Sport 14-BS Lithium Powersport Battery (14AH, 250 Crank-

    ing Amps); it was less than its 16-BS richer brother (18AH, 360 Crank-

    ing Amps) retailing for $180.Pick it up in its box and you will have to

    peek inside to make sure it’s there.The thing only weighs a bit above a

    pound. My old lead-acid weighs about 6 pounds. You can mount it up-

    side down or sideways. On my K1200, where the battery housing is

    above the gas tank, it’s nice to lose all that top-heaviness.

    Lithium is said to last a lot longer; it claims “to payfor itself” by enduring

    better than 2000 cycles, compared to 300 cyclesfor lead-acid. Cranking

    power is more reliable since oncea standard lead-acidbattery drops its

    charge between 50-70%, your bike won’t crank. You’ll be stranded. For

    lithium, the battery would have to be discharged fully to100% for it to

    RIP.

    Old standby lead-acid technology has been around for 150 years.

    Some sources say that lead-acid works better under “parasitic” condi-

    tions: those guys you see who must mount signal blockers, radar, back-

    up radar, CB, GPS, back-up GPS, satellite phone,microwave and oven

    timers… for that kind of sucking you’ll want to stick with lead-acid.

    Another downside to lithium is that they allegedly don’t work as well in

    freezing temps. But I once had cranking problems with myGSin the

    Catskills one frosty nutzmorning. It wouldn’t turn over until the sun

    came up. In freezing temps with lithium, the battery needs to be “woken

    up” by switching on the ignition and letting the headlamp do the warm-

    up.

    The biggestbenefit is saved for last. Lithium hardly losses its mojo. This

    is measured by a battery’s relative self-discharge rate. A parked motor-

    cycle is never a very happy one, least happy is when it contains a lead-

    acid battery over the winter unplugged from life-support. Lead-acid will

    discharge one percent per day, under the best of conditions. Compare

    that to lithium’s self-discharge rate of 10 percent per year.

    Lithium is good news for bikes parked in storage lockers especially over

    a winter. You need only to disconnect the negative terminal. If the bike

    is parked for say 6 months, then it’s advised to give it a charge using a

    lithium-supportedcharger ($33).

    Higher cost, yes, but when you factor in its lighter weight, longer endur-

    ance, more reliable cranks and much lower discharge rate, What’s not to love?

    Picking up from where we left off in the 1starticle , Boxer Shorts

    March 2020, was all parts were cleaned. It is time to inventory parts. First and probably the most complete source of parts for Bing Car-buretors is The Bing Agency - www.bingcarburetors.com. Parts can also be soured from www.maxbmw.com, www.Dunbareurosports.com, www.wagnermotorsports.com, www.franksmotorcyclesales.com . Using the attached schematic, end of article, from the Bing Carburetors Manual, I will discuss the critical replaceable parts and function. There are different levels of rebuild kits. After evaluation of parts is complete, consult our parts source for best options. I purchased my parts individually due to condition of carburetor. The parts replaced are underlined below.

    The hints below might assist you when reassembling the parts. When reassembling , pay close attention to sizing of the O-ring to assure the proper fit. Your local auto parts store sells an O-ring stretcher to ease assembly. I used needle nose pliers.

    Main jet assembly - As noted in previous article a considerable amount of patience is needed in disassembly. The two keys ingre-dients, solvent; MEK/Acetone and ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) worked miracles. To reassemble, follow the schematic at end of article. You may have to use a magnifying glass t o locate the parts. When reassembling, be careful, do not over torque the brass components. If you have it, it may make senses to coat threads with a copper anti-gall coating.

    Air Mixture Screw - if you remember, this turned out to be the issue of my poor acceleration, surging and performance. Key point, do not forget the O-ring. The O-ring acts as a friction piece to keep the screw from backing out from engine vibration.

    Idle Jet - Looking at the schematic, I missed the O-ring on my as-sembly. I had to go back in after I thought it was done and install the O-Ring. Always double check.

    Float Needle and Housing- I would recommend, if your are replac-ing the float needle, you also remove the housing. This assumes the float needle the early version, solid brass. Mine was early ver-sion and it needed to be replaced. The ethanol gas had pitted the seat and fuel was leaking by. To remove, buy a 7mm tap, 7mm x 2” hex head bolt. Thread the brass insert, heat the carburetor body up with a hair dryer and screw in the bolt with one nut threaded onto the bolt. I used a box end wrench and a large fender washer to back the insert out by tightening the nut. The box end wrench was placed between the carburetor body and the fender washer slowly backing it out.

    Inserting the needle valve seat, I heated up the carburetor body with hair dryer, inserted the seat and set it in place using a wood block and hammer.

    Float - In my rebuild, I used the existing float as it was not yet dam-aged from ethanol gas. The float needs to be removed to replace the needle valve and seat. To remove, there is a hinge pin, refer-ence schematic. I used an 8 penny nail and tapped it genteelly. It came out. Note one end is knurled, drive from the other end. Be-fore removing, I checked the float level off of the carburetor hous-ing. Noted that dimension and checked after reassembly. Since it was the same, I did not need to adjust. Adjustment is made by bending the tab that contacts the float needle.

    Float Bowl Gasket - Caution needs to be installed carefully when reinstalling. If you pinch the cork gasket, it becomes torn. Torn, it will leak gas over you exhaust pipes. Seat the gasket and then snap the float bowl clip over the fuel bowl.

    Main Jet Diaphragm - This is under the top cover of the carburetor body. Four screws see previous article for removal instructions. Lift off the cover and remove the diaphragm and main jet needle assembly. Inspect the diaphragm for tears. If not torn, replace into the carburetor body. Note there is a locating nub that goes into a grove to properly align. If torn, replace by removing the 4 bolts and metal retainer. See schematic.

    Throttle Body O-ring - If you have two carburetors do one at a time. Referencing schematic, you will need to remove the throttle linkage. Use patience, and put it in place you do not loose parts. Once removed, then turn carburetor over to access the butterflies (brass) inserted into the throttle shaft. To remove screws, take a dremmel tool and grindpeened over end, then remove screw. You may need to apply heat from hair drier as needed to the screw. The brass butterflies will come out with a little coaxing. Once out, pull the throttle body shaft out and replace O-ring. Reverse proce-dure for installation. Once butterfly is inserted and “new “ screws are installed and tightened, be sure to peen over the end of the screw. You do not want to have this small screw to be sucked into the engine.

    Choke Vacuum Housing Gasket - This mechanism is located on the side of the carburetor, reference Schematic. Four screws hold the cover in place. Loosen Screws; use Acetone/MEK and ATF to soak the housing. With a little patience and heat from hair drier they should come out. Once out, clean and install new O-ring, see schematic. Reinstall the cover. Put anti gall on threads to ease removal in future.

    Your carburetor is now rebuilt and ready for remounting and start-ing the bike. If the schematic is not clear or you would like a parts list feel free to contact me. We will cover that in the next article. Good wrenching email me if you have any questions.

The Best Current Guess Is May 18. But in reality it will probably be July or August , Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Good News!
