The Yankee Homecoming Youth Community Service Award is presented to two high school students who live in, attend school in or volunteer in Newburyport; demonstrating a strong commitment to public service, volunteerism and dedication to a cause.

AlexA lookerNewburyport High School

Grade 12Last year Alexa chose to start vol-

unteering at the Newburyport Learn-ing Enrichment Center working with at-risk, low-income students and chil-dren. She has quickly become one of the hardest-working volunteers at the center, where she helps a group of middle school students succeed academically in Homework Club. During middle school, Alexa worked with the charity organization Free the Children, which led to her orga-nize a two-week service trip to Pan-ama with the nonprofit Sustainable Harvest International.

She has also participated in the Commission for Diversity and Toler-ance, the Racial Justice Committee, poetry slam competitions and much more.

A l e xa wa s n o m i n a t e d by Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center Director Nancy Earls, who notes that Alexa’s “able and serious leadership has proven itself many times, but it is her desire to chal-lenge herself that makes her such a unique and valuable asset to the community.”

CAmeroN CyrNewburyport High School

Grade 11Cameron has been volunteer-

ing with Newburyport Youth Ser-vices since she was 11 years old, where she has dedicated endless hours representing Youth Services and the city’s youth at community events and meetings. She helped create and present the Youth Bill of Rights, which was adopted by the Newburyport City Council in 2013. Her favorite volunteer experience was spending a week in November working in a school that helps chil-dren whose families survive by scav-enging the city’s garbage dump.

Cameron is raising money for the organization Safe Passage and plans to return to Guatemala to continue pursuing volunteer work there.

Newburyport Youth Services Director Andrea Egmont nominated Cameron. “She is gracious and mature. Responsible and caring,” says Andrea. “She is always posi-tive and upbeat. She models com-munity involvement in everything she does.”
