    Yankee United News

DEAR PLAYERS, PARENTS ANDFRIENDS OF YANKEE UNITEDFOOTBALL CLUB,

With the closing of the 2009/2010 season, Iwould like to take a moment to reflect on theaccomplishments our club made on and offthe fieldin our efforts to become the top young women's club

in the state. There was a lot of activity andsignificant progress, including the following:

    OFF THE FIELD ACCOMPLISHMENTS

    1) YUFC Website -- we successfully migrated toa new site hosted by League Athletics. This changehas significantly improved communication betweenparents, players, managers and coaches. Theenhanced capabilities that this system offers haveallows us to showcase our players and teamsaccomplishments. We have already had over 15,000hits to our site since its launch in March.

    2) Monthly Newsletter -- Another means tocommunicate and highlight our teams and playersaccomplishments on a regular basis to all Yankeeplayers, parents and friends in our club.

    3) "Notice Me" -- we adopted this as our collegeshowcase web service. This is a tool for Yankeeplayers and parents to assist them with the collegeprocess.

    4) Joint Venture with U.A.C. (United AthleticCenter), FUSA (Fairfield United Soccer Association),and R Nunes Clinics and Camps -- There is still

much to work out in this arrangement but to datewe have in place the following:

Yankee United FC will exclusively use theUAC facilities in Waterbury, Stratford and Milfordfor winter training.

Yankee, UAC and R Nunes will offer a girlsjunior academies ages 7-12 yrs old through out theyear.

Yankee United FC will exclusively be a girlspremier club while UAC will exclusively be apremier club for boys. Both clubs along with RNunes and FUSA have agreed to encourage potentialhigh level premier players U12 and up to try out toeach club depending on gender.

Beginning in the summer of 2011, R NunesSoccer Camps will be the residential soccer camprecommended for all Yankee players. This will allowYankee players to attend a high level overnight campat a significantly reduced cost.

    5) Adidas and Soccer Rugby Imports --Continued our partnership, which provides benefitssuch as a 20% saving all Yankee uniforms, equipmentetc. To maintain this, we will exclusively useproducts under the Adidas brand and will purchasesolely through Soccer Rugby Imports.

    6) Facilities -- We extended our agreement tocontinue to use St. Joseph High School for practices

and games. We expect an additional grass field willbe available next Fall that will enable our teams tohave greater flexibility with practice times and space.

    7) Referee Administration -- Signed EduardoMozzo to be our referee assigner. Eduardo iscurrently the district assigner which will streamlineour process by allowing us to communicate directlywith him when requesting referees.

When you put a group of soccerplayers on the pitch togetherfor the first time, no matterhow talented the side, theresult might not be indicativeof the their abilities and

potential. And so it was forthe Academy Stars at the US

    Club Regional Qualifier inPittsgrove, NJ.

In their first game against the MPS LadyCrusaders (MA), the Stars began the first half by

conceding an early goal. By the end of the half theyhad improved their overall play but were still facing

a 2-0 deficit. Bythe end of the

second half, theStars wereoutplaying theiropponent and hadmanaged to pullwithin 1 of theCrusaders on agoal from ChelseaBoursiquot. Buttoo many shots

went wide and high, resulting in a 2-1 loss. The opening game loss put the Stars in an

untenable position: not only did they need to runthe table against their remaining opponents butthey needed help: the Crusaders needed to lose anddraw or it was a trip home to CT empty-handed.Luckily for them they got exactly what theyneeded.

In Game 2 against Matchfit Chelsea, the Starsscored on another goal by Boursiquot and heldplayed for a shutout to preserve a 1-0 win.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the pitch the Crusadersended their 2nd game with a draw against GAKThunder 2-2.

In Game 3, the pattern was repeated with anearly goal by Boursiquot and hard-nosed defense bythe Stars to preserve a shutout. On a nearby field, the Crusaders were losing badly to Matchfit (finalscore 4-0).

This was a very good showing for the girls, particularly in the way they improved during eachgame. observed Coach Wayne Mones. The nextstep (USC Nationals) will be a very significant oneand they will need to improve further as a team toshow well down at Virginia Beach.

In sweltering heat over the June 11-13weekend, CT players labored mightily

against their ODP counterparts fromother Region 1 states. When the dustsettled and the last ball had been

played, the only team from the NutmegState to advance out of their group were

the U-17 girls, who tied Western PA, 0-0 anddefeated Massachussetts and Virginia by scores of2-0 and 2-1, respectively to advance to the finalswhich will be held at the end of June. But that is onlya small part of what happens at the ODPtournament.

With Region 1 scouts on the sidelines withclipboards in hand, players get a second look and achance for an invitation to the ODP Regional Campin July. Identification is a critically importantobjective of the tournament and one that should notbe overlooked.

And then there is the drama born of controversy. The U15 Girls second ODP team was informed justbefore leaving for New Jersey that, through ascheduling issue, they would be playing in the U17age bracket. In equivalent terms, it would be afreshman team from Connecticut against seniorsfrom other states. CJSA reminded the girls that youdont improve and grow playing weaker competitionand they should make the most of their chances.

And that is precisely what they did.

The initial game went as expected: a 4-0 loss toEastern NY, two of them on PKs. Then came abreak through. The next day they took the fieldagainst West Virginia and went toe to toe with theolder girls to record a 2-0 win. In their final game, against New Hampshire, CT ODP2 went down 2-0in the first half and appeared to be on their way toanother lopsided loss. In the 90 degree heat of the

noon day sun, the girls notched two second half goalsof their own to New Hampshires one goal. Theywere pressing for a 3rd goal when time expired.

With the win, New Hampshire advanced out ofthe group to the Region 1 Finals two weeks later. TheU15 ODP girls went home with the quiet satisfactionof knowing they could compete at that level... andwin.

    26 June 2010, Rustenburg,South Africa

    The U.S. team's trek

through the World Cupcame to an abrupt endwith a 2-1 overtime lossto Ghana that wasdecided on a spectaculargoal by Asamoah Gyanas the clock struck

    twelve (midnight) local time.

And so the Cinderella story for a talented USside fell short of its promise. "The finality of itis brutal," said Landon Donovan, the L.A.Galaxy star who scored three of the five U.S.goals in the tournament. "When you realize howmuch you put into it, not only for the last fouryears but for your whole life. There's noguarantee there's another opportunity. It'sdisappointing."

The U.S. never led in regulation time in thetournament -- and never lost in regulationeither. Yet they came within a goal of thequarterfinals only to be sent home on Gyan's

shot in the dark. After fighting back to force the extra period ona Donovan penalty kick in the 62nd minute, theU.S. saw Ghana retake the lead three minutesinto the first 15-minute extra period on a playthat started innocently enough with the U.S.sending a long ball into the Ghana end. AGhanaian defender headed it forward to AndreAyew, who was simply trying to clear it backacross the midfield line.

But his clearing shot found Gyan on a dead run, cutting between two U.S. defenders. Gyangrounded the ball with his chest and got offaleft-footed shot that went over keeper TimHoward and into the goal, sending the U.S.home and the Black Stars on to the quarterfinalsto play Uruguay, a 2-1 winner over South Koreaearlier in the day.

"We had a great opportunity. But you have toprove it over 90 minutes and we didn't do it,"Howard said. "We're going home so there's anopportunity missed. We should have won thegame."

In was a painful way to lose for a team thathadn't done anything the easy way in thistournament, coming from behind to earn draws

with both England and Slovenia before beatingAlgeria on a Donovan goal in stoppage time toqualify for the second round.

"I think we can hold our heads high at how wedid," Donovan said. "Obviously you hate losing.Obviously the feeling is bitter. But the effort, the energy, the attitude we had, the belief. Ihave no qualms with that. Sometimes you losegames. That's part of the soccer. At this pointwe lost the game and we're out of the WorldCup."

Donovan and his teammates will surely bewatching on July 11th as the Netherlands andSpain face offin the Final. Neither has ever wona World Cup, so no matter who wins, it will bean historic finish to what has been, by allaccounts, a thrilling and fantastic month offootball played out on the world stage. May thebest side win!
