    Normally, when NOx emissions are reduced, the fuelconsumption and smoke generation will increase,

    adversely affecting both the environment and man-agement.As a solution to this, YANMAR has developed

    "EcoDiesel SAVETEN", which is designed so as tocomply with marine environmental protection. The

    "EcoDiesel SAVETEN" employs the ASSIGN combus-tion system, an innovative state-of-the-art technology,and other new features. It improves the fuel con-sumption and smoke generation in addition to

    reducing NOx emissions.

    The Appendix to the protocol, Annex VI Regulations for the Prevention of Air pollution

    from Ships of MARPOL 73/78 which was adopted in the conference of parties to the

    International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships in September 1997,

    and it comes into effect from May 19, 2005.

    The air pollutant emission regulations apply to diesel engines with output exceeding

    130kW. For vessels operated internationally, the regulations apply retroactively to ves-

    sels built on or after Jan.1, 2000. For vessels operated in Japanese waters only, they ap-

    ply to engines of the vessels built on or after May 19, 2005.
